Turtlegram: Some of Mr. Oppong’s teammates, however, said they plan to join him in a kneeling protest at an upcoming game. Senior Joseph Bolay said about half of the team had agreed to take part as of Monday afternoon.
“All of us on the team fully support Michael,” he said. “We want to show that we’re behind him 100 percent.”
Hold on one second. I’m not a math major or anything, but I’m pretty sure “half the team” is not the same thing as 100%. If only half the team feels the need to participate in this publicity stunt, then your team does not “fully support Michael.” They half support him. The other half probably can’t stand him and just wants to play football. This is why schools need to put an end to this shit. Because they’re splitting teams apart. If you wanna talk about politics then join the debate club. Football games should be about football and nothing more.
What if one of his teammate’s has a police officer for a father and finds this whole thing offensive? Is he gonna be forced to participate in this? What’s he gonna feel like when he’s one of the only one’s standing? Are the kids who aren’t standing gonna call him racist? Are they gonna block for him on the football field? Football is the ultimate team sport. It requires the most unity. And all this selfish kid and his peers are doing is dividing the team, because…..Colin Kaepernick told them to.
And according to the Worcester Public Schools rule book, the school and coaching staff would be well within their rights legally to sit this kid down for pulling this stunt:
Participating in clubs and activities is a privilege, not a right. That’s all you need to know. This kid signed the student handbook. He agreed to these rules.
“Students are required to good citizenship” at school events. Students who don’t meet these rules can be suspended by administration as they see fit. End of story. The kid went out of his way to let the world know that he would not respect a flag because that flag represents a racist and oppressive government. That’s the exact opposite of good citizenship.
Also notice that the students removal is “not subject to procedural requirements” under Mass general law. In other words, there is no hearing or meeting required. You can suspend a kid from an extracurricular activity pretty easily. Whether or not you agree with that is irrelevant. It’s in the handbook and the kid signed it. He agreed to these terms. So all you wannabe lawyers out there whining about the constitution can have a coke and a smile and shut the fuck up, because you literally have no idea what you’re talking about.
