A common complaint about the protesters is that the “stop and frisk” policies that they’ve had in New York for years are this terrible injustice. Well check out this story from the Worcester Police Department Facebook page:

Worcester, MA (February 24, 2015) – On Monday, February 23, 2015 members of the Worcester Police Gang Unit were patrolling in the Main South area. The gang officers were in the area due to the many complaints that the department receives from citizens within the community. The complaints received mainly address quality of life issues. As a result, localized police enforcement was selected for this area.

At approximately 4:10 PM, two gang unit officers were in an unmarked police vehicle in heavy traffic in the area of 674 Main Street. The officers observed a grey vehicle stop in the middle of the road, disregarding the flow of traffic, to allow a male to exit the vehicle. The male then began to walk on the sidewalk. This action got the attention of the officers.

The officers drove parallel to the male as he walked on the sidewalk. The male, later identified as a 17-year-old Worcester juvenile, observed the officers and immediately exhibited signs of distress. The male turned the right side of his body in an attempt to shield that side from the officers. The male also looked nervous at the sight of the police and attempted to shield his face.

The officers became suspicious with the juveniles behavior. The officers stopped their vehicle and approached the male and identified themselves. The male provided his name but did not have identification on him. Because of his nervous demeanor, the officers became concerned that he may have been lying to conceal his identity to avoid arrest. At this time the officers conducted a pat frisk of the juvenile. The juvenile was carrying a backpack. The officers felt the outside of the backpack and felt the outline of a handgun. The officers opened the backpack and discovered a loaded .22 caliber handgun.

The juvenile was placed under arrest and transported to police headquarters for booking. The juvenile, an admitted local gang member, was charged with Carrying a Firearm without a License, Carrying a Loaded Firearm without a License and Possession of Ammunition without a License.

What do ya know – “stop and frisk” works. First of all it’s bullshit that they’re not releasing his name because he’s a juvenile. He’s a known 17 year old gang banger. He gave up his right to be considered a child. Publicly humiliate him so we know to be on guard if we ever see him. Makes no sense either because they release the names of juveniles all the time. Like that kid Phillip Chism who killed his teacher in Danvers. He was 14. If you’re a criminal then you’re a criminal and the public has a right to know. Period.

But I think we can all agree that taking a violent gang banger with a loaded, unregistered gun off of the streets is a victory for society, right? Well done Worcester Police. Oh wait, you’re telling me that people are turning this nice young man into the victim? Let’s see what they’re saying:

Oh look – white guilt!! Let me get this straight Justin. You’re AGAINST racism, and you’re showing us that by jumping to the conclusion that a gang banger with a gun is automatically a person of color. Right. Keep telling yourself that you’re one of the good guys.

Screen Shot 2015-02-24 at 8.50.26 PM

Of course. We should do everything in our power to make sure gangbangers with loaded guns don’t have their rights violated. That’s the kind of society I wanna live in.

Screen Shot 2015-02-24 at 8.54.15 PM

LOL. I know right!! This poor youth was just about to turn his life (at the age of 17) finish his GED and open his own barbershop. Who amongst us hasn’t joined a gang, got dropped off in Main South, and walked around with a loaded unregistered handgun? That’s just boys being boys.

Then there was this winner:

She makes a good point. This could EASILY happen to Turtleboy Jr. What parent can’t relate to this? I mean, Momma Turtleboy used to get calls from the police about me carrying illegal firearms all the time back when I was bangin’.

Screen Shot 2015-02-24 at 8.51.56 PM

Yea guys, we don’t know all the circumstances. He might’ve needed that loaded firearm to do his homework that night. Or maybe he was just holding onto the gun for his law abiding gang buddies? Ever think of that? There are PLENTY of logical scenarios that could explain this.

She makes a good point too – no one has a right to judge, only God. Well, except for a jury of 12 of your randomly chosen peers, a judge, and everyone on the Internet. But Tupac said it once in a song so it must be true.

The bottom line is that if these people really cared about poor people of color in bad neighborhoods like they claim they do, then they wouldn’t want violent thugs walking around with unregistered guns. But as usual we see them for what they are – professional assholes. They don’t care about poor people or black people. They only care about making sure violent criminals have as many rights as possible. That’s it.

The end does not justify the means. Stop and frisk without probable cause is a 4th amendment violation.
If you want to live in a glass house walking around with no pockets and see through backpacks, have at it. Whether I like you or not and regardless of how I perceive you, you have a right to walk by me un-harassed as much as I do you.
I will not trade my liberties for security.

What do you call a car stopping in the middle of the street with no regard for the flow of traffic and then seeing someone exit said vehicle?

Random person on the same road thinks, “hmm, that’s odd.” What does a cop in a high violence area think?

So Cathy Long, why don’t you take your own advice: “you don’t know the circumstances behind it. Until you get all the facts don’t be so quick to judge”.

Maybe the gang squad knows this clown. Maybe they have had run-ins with him before. Maybe the saw him involved with other known gang members and his suspicious behavior threw a red flag.

    Your statement works both ways….

For some reason I thought my reply would show, but anyway, Mack is incorrect that police do not have the right to stop anybody without reasonable suspicion of a crime. The police can stop a person, and ask questions, without “arresting” the person. Upon seeing suspicious activity, the police may perform what is called a “Terry Stop,” and may temporarily detain people to request that they identify themselves and to question them about the suspicious activity. The scope of a “Terry Stop” is limited to investigation of the specific suspicious activity, and if the police detain people to question them about additional matters, the stop can turn into an “arrest.” For their own safety, the police can perform a “weapons frisk” on the outside of a person’s clothes (sometimes called “patting down the suspect”) during a “Terry Stop.” True, “Looking nervous because a cop is following you isn’t a crime”. Of course, “exhibiting signs of distress”, turning the right side of his body in an attempt to shield that side from the officers, looking nervous at the sight of the police, and attempted to shield his face is going to throw up “red flags” to law enforcement, which the suspect committed all of those acts. Even one of those acts would send up flags.

Curious how many people complaining about this are also militant gun control folk?

an admitted local gang member. A 17 year old carrying a loaded gun? Maybe just going to the local gun range to practice? Nothing good was going to come out of him with the gun. Hopefully he gets tried as an adult so he wont be walking the streets doing the same thing next week. His parents must be proud. But most blame the cops for doing whats right and getting a piece of shit of the streets before he kills or gets himself killed. But then again, if he gets killed , that’s 1 less piece of shit walking the streets.

The thing about guns is that they’re heavy, and a fully loaded gun is heavier than an empty gun. Of course, a .22 is lighter than a .45, but even a .22 can weigh down a backpack in a suspicious way. The cops probably know this and have learned to observe the distribution of weight in backpacks. Books can be heavy, too, but they show their weight in a backpack in a different manner. Every detail counts when you’re trying to conceal a gun.

I’m betting that all of the people objecting to cops taking a violent, armed thug off the streets do not live or raise a family in immediate vicinity of 674 Main Street.

Of course stopping a citizen and searching them without cause is not justified. But a known gang member doing gang member things in a gang member area is cause. They didn’t just stop some random guy, they were looking for specific behavior which he exhibited

So, how often do the Worcester police do this and find nothing? Very frequently, I’m certain.

The fact that people so willingly accept people’s rights being trampled on in the name of safety is so incredibly strange.

The fact that you and many alike are so willing to be be caught in the crossfire of drug deal gone wrong or a gang war is equally as strange. It’s fine to defend until the stray bullet hits you, your child, parents, grandparents, ect..

This young man (whose race was never identified in the article), has been immediately assumed to black. Gotta love ultra-liberal logic at play there. The cops are racist for arresting a kid, but these armchair Walter Chronkites aren’t racist for automatically assuming every criminal is black.

He didn’t just look nervous – he was actively trying to conceal an illegal firearm. AND he got out of a vehicle in the middle of the busiest road in the city. Maybe I’m crazy, but all of that adds up to being pretty fucking suspicious.

And calling someone a snitch? What the actual fuck is wrong with you? I hope you get mugged in broad daylight in front of a dozen witnesses, and all of them claim to have not seen anything. Since, per your logic, snitching is bad.

It is a common practice to feel all criminals are black and that can be justified by statistics from the DOJ. DOJ is department of Justice for those young, uneducated street thugs.
The DOJ said in 2010, that blacks represent 13% of the population but make up 79% of ALL the inmates in U.S. prisons.
Quite an accomplishment for just one race.

You act like people of color and of lower classes are awarded the same opportunity as middle and upper class white folk. But besides that point, bottom line is that police do not have the right to stop anybody without reasonable suspicion of a crime. Looking nervous because a cop is following you isn’t a crime. I’m white and if I had a cop following me id be nervous as hell to wondering what sick intimidating games he’s going to play with me once he stops. How can anything in society be held accountable though, when those who are supposed to enforce the law neither follow, or have a clear understanding of the law. There’s cases getting thrown out everyday of illegal searches based on marijuana smell. When will police start being held responsible for their own ignorance of the law?

Being someone who fans over the wire, one would expect you to understand the legitimate danger presented to teens in this upbringing and the difficulty to find any way out.

And an even better question, why the hell are you such a snitch?

I love you glorious idiots that defend these pieces of garbage. What the hell good can come from this dingle berry walking around with a loaded gun? Just because you took Intro to CJ at Quinsig 10 years ago, does not make you an attorney or smarter than the cops. You must have skipped the day they went over MGL Ch 41 Sec 98. Read it. It has some good info in there. Like the part that says “They may examine all persons abroad whom they have reason to suspect of unlawful design, and may demand of them their business abroad and whither they are going…”. I know its old timey speak and hard to understand. But these cops were members of the gang unit. They probably knew this kid from many previous encounters. They can recognize when someone is paranoid because they know they are doing wrong, and are trying to hide something. So you show us all your own ignorance of the law. And by the way, there are plenty of kids from this neighborhood who are doing good and trying to make something of themselves. It is possible. Maybe if someone showed them, from a young age, how to be responsible and work hard for things in life. Have you ever driven thru Main South in the morning when they are all out waiting for the bus? There are a very few dressed in their ROTC uniforms. They are usually standing by themselves, away from the rest of the group because they are not part of the crew. These kids will make something of themselves and get the hell out of there someday. I for one wish the cops would do more of this. Fuck these gangstahs and drug pushers. Just because they come from this neighborhood and weren’t afforded with white boi opportunity, does not give them a right to run the place like the wild west. God forbid this idiot decided to put lead down range and hit some innocent person. Then what? You’d be screaming that the cops weren’t there. Guaranteed. So enough with the white guilt. If you need to feel better about yourself, go council some youth in front of the Y.

It doesn’t really matter what the court may decide. They may throw out the charges, if they feel he was profiled, but one thing is now certain.
This punk is not getting his gun back and that’s a plus for society.
