So a lot of people were pissed off about the roads in Worcester yesterday and shared this video from WCVB meteorologist AJ Burnett, of anarchy and chaos on Belmont Street:

Alright, first of all, anyone who drives a car without four wheel drive in New England deserves to get in an accident if they drive on Belmont Street in a snowstorm. That’s just Darwinism at work. And spare me the nonsense about not being able to afford a car with four wheel drive. They’re no more expensive than your average Liz Warren-mobile. I don’t care how good or bad the city does at plowing the roads, if you try driving down a huge hill while the snow is still coming down hard, there’s a good chance you’re gonna slip and slide and crash into something. That’s just science.

Secondly, all the people he interviewed that said this never happens on Belmont Street are filthy liars or carpetbaggers. This might be the most dangerous major street in Worcester when it snows.

Normally Turtleboy would be the first to jump on the “this is all Fast Eddie’s fault again” bandwagon. But in all honesty, they didn’t do a bad job. Turtleboy would lose his credibility if we just repeated the same thing over and over again. Turtleboy got where he is today by calling it like he sees it, and Friday’s plowing wasn’t that bad.

Turtleboy went out Friday around 11:00 AM with a blog in mind. We were gonna go to the town/city line with Leicester, Auburn, Shrewsbury, Millbury, Grafton, West Boylston, Holden, and Paxton, and see what Worcester roads looked like compared to our neighbors. We assumed that Worcester would be put to shame by our neighbors. But when we got to the Worcester/Leicester line this is what we saw:

12669901_1679560195660590_1336640630_o

No difference. Same shit when we went to the Auburn town line. The bottom line is that snow was  coming down fast and accumulating faster at that point. You’d have to have a plow on every single street going up and down that street every other minute in order for them to not look like that.

The bottom line is that for once the city did it’s job. I’m not gonna give them props, because they’re supposed to do their job. That would be like cheering for an 8 year old who took a smash on the potty.  They’re not Turtleboy Jr. using the potty for the first time. I’m not gonna congratulate them for something they should’ve learned how to do a long, long time ago. But this time Turtleboy isn’t leading the charge for Ed Augustus’ head.

I own 4wd vehicles and I put winter tires on them. Also have manual trans on 2 of the 3.

Prep your ride and winter isn’t that bad.

4WD will get you moving, but it won’t get you stopping. Some of the vehicles in this video I do believe have some kind of 4WD setup.
You really need to get yourself to good set of snow tires if you have any chance of maintaining traction in frozen slippery conditions like this.

I remember getting snowtires for my lowly blue sedan during that massive influx of snow we had in 2015 and compared to the old all seasons I had on them, I never once found myself getting stuck or skidded out of control no matter how much snow came at me.

If you can’t handle the hills, get off the f***ing road and leave the winter driving to the professionals.

People drive like freaks! NE drivers used to be responsible, respectful, erring on the side of caution during snow. Now, maybe there are more Floridians and Georgians, or Brazilians and Dominicans, but I assure all young snow monsters, whether driving a Lexus, BMW or whatnot… old yankee white oaks stand crooked, and deal hard lessons.

Since when are Floridians and Georgians moving TO Massachusetts?

You don’t have to be rich to buy awd. Subaru’s are all awd and they are cheap as fuck

Only the elderly and moonbats buy Subarus.

Downshifting is much more effective than braking in the snow. Control your wheel speed with the transmission and you won’t slide all over when you hit the brakes. Stop riding the brakes people!

4WD and AWD will not help you when you are trying to stop in icy conditions, its your brakes and tires. The amount of people I see with bald tires even during the winter blows my mind.

Please folks, check your tires! They are the first point of contact with the road and make an immense difference in how your vehicle will handle in hazardous conditions, get yourself some winter or good all seasons.

Even though I have an off road Xterra with All terrain T/A K02 tires I will still slide on ice, take it slow and brake early and softly.

I’m not sure where you are looking but 4WD and AWD most certainly cost more than FWD, those are options that add to the sticker price of any vehicle.

Nope. The answer is to treat the roads with salt, and to KEEP UP on the plowing, not start plowing 5 hours into a storm. True, Worcester did as poor as job as the towns, but theres no glory in that. Listen to the scanners next storm. Cops are going from one accident to another. A lot ARE involving 4WD as they THINK they can drive fast on ice. When theres no salt applied, or constant plowing to keep up with snowfall, it hard packs the snow into shear ice. That is what happened this storm. How come the DPW commissioner doesn’t know this?

I don’t think the point being made was to compare a vehicle with FWD to the same exact vehicle with 4WD. Of course in that case it would be an option and would increase the price. But there are definitely some non-4WD vehicles that cost more than some 4WDs.

Just like any problem there are multiple causes; vehicles/tires, how the roads are treated, and the drivers themselves. Personally I’d say everyone should have to retake drivers class every 5 or 10 years or something. I know probably nobody here will agree with me on that 🙂 But it’s kind of crazy that all we have to do is take a easy-as class when we’re 16 and barely pay attention and think we know it all already. And some people don’t even do that! I took motorcycle class when I was older and learned a ton about safety that either I wasn’t told before or wasn’t paying attention, really made me think more and drive safer. Classes to re-educate people about tailgating, stopping distance, driving in bad weather could really help a lot.

Ok feel free to downvote me, ha ha.

I remember when all the streets around the. hospitals used to be treated and plowed with the highest priority. I worked on Belmont street for a lot of years and even during the worst storms it was always just wet.
I disagree with the 4wd crap, We had mostly rear wheel drive cars and still managed to get around the city of hills.
The bottom line is the city does a shit job and people dont know how to drive for the most part anymore.

These people who can’t handle Belmont St would cry and shit themselves on Diamond St or the Millbury St end of Perry Ave.

On Vernon Hill, we weren’t afraid of roads with a 75 degree incline!

Thinking the same thing…alternative-universe TB is filling in.

Just because neighboring towns’ roads are a mess doesn’t mean it is fine if Worcester’s are as well.

Lol….true. I live in Vernon Hill…right smack in the middle of the street, a hill street. I have no issues going down it, throw the car in 1, lowest gear and ride brake down slowly…only issue I had was getting up it, with the packed down snow and smooth ice like layer, because of the slush, so for me, it was all downhill Friday and Saturday morning. To be honest, I would rather drive downhill than try and get my way up. Lived in worcester all my life, used to joy ride in this type of weather growing up so I knew how to handle driving in it if I was ever out and about during these storms. Use your judgement, use your low gear and know how to reroute the areas, and you should be fine. Some people just turn to stupid in driving the minute snow hits the ground.
