Lisa Dyer and Melinda Boone’s reign of terror is continuing at North High School, and they’re really picking up their game when it comes to intimidation.
On Monday morning Phyllis Goldstein showed up unannounced to observe Janice Harvey. Phyllis Goldstein is NOT a teacher. Here is her position:
A “curriculum liaison.” Because we definitely need a curriculum liaison. Don’t know how schools survived before those existed. Guess how much she gets paid?
$103,698. Ya got that? Someone who doesn’t teach and has some bullshit job on Irving Street collects a six figure salary, courtesy of the taxpayers. This is why your kid’s school is underfunded. Because people like Phyllis Goldstein can’t get real jobs.
Teachers are supposed to be evaluated by their department heads or administrators who have extensive teaching experience. But not Janice Harvey. She gets Phyllis Goldstein. In case you can’t see what happened here, Lisa Dyer called in a ringer. Janice Harvey and the teacher’s union fired shots at the last School Committee meeting, and so this is how a petty, vindictive, unqualified tyrant like Lisa Dyer gets her revenge. And just think, she’s in charge of 1,350 Worcester schoolchildren. Yay!!
Anyway, it’s common professional courtesy for administrators to give teachers some warning about when they will be observed. For instance, what if she’s giving a test that day? What if they’re watching a movie related to the curriculum? It would be a gigantic waste of taxpayer resources to observe a class like that. This is why it’s important for a professional conversation to take place between the teacher and the administrator beforehand.
Of course we know by now that there’s nothing professional about Lisa Dyer. Her infamous email to her staff was right out of the Jerry Springer white trash playbook.
And the timing was certainly interesting. Last week was the ELA MCAS. According to the DESE rules, classrooms where the MCAS are taken must have their walls completely covered and boards completely cleared so as not to accidentally inspire a kid into passing the test. I swear to God this actually happens in schools. This is how fucking stupid the people are who run education in this state. A teacher spends all this time setting up their classroom (with money out of their own pockets) and then all of a sudden the MCAS no-fun patrol comes in there and turns it into dungeon. These people are the definition of suck.
When this happens teachers like Janice Harvey have to relocate to other classrooms, which is a gigantic pain in the ass. You have to understand, high school teachers have 125 students or so. Often they teach four different classes. This means they have to pack up all their shit for the day, including textbooks and work for all the classes they’ll be teaching. But only after they make sure their classroom has been transformed into an emotionless and barren wasteland, because they’re not getting back into their room with the MCAS Nazi patrol on duty. This goes on for three straight days – last Wednesday through Friday.
When Monday morning came around teachers like Janice Harvey are then responsible for transforming the MCAS dungeon back into a place that can inspire students to give a shit about that whiny little bastard Holden Caulfield. It’s obviously a chaotic time, and probably the worst possible day to do an observation. Naturally this was the day that Lisa Dyer chose to bring in Phyllis Goldstein.
Lisa Dyer was well aware of the fact that Janice Harvey would walk into school and be greeted by a gigantic project to restore her classroom to the way it was 6 days ago. They also know that Lisa Dyer has mandated that ALL teachers write down the “class objectives” for all five classes on the board. Because how the fuck did any of us ever graduate from high school without class objectives written on the board?
It was your classic “gotcha” revenge move from a petty, worthless principal. And it worked. Janice got a shitty review that day. But let’s be honest – Phyllis Goldstein didn’t show up to give her a fair review. This wasn’t an observation – it was a shakedown. A show of force and intimidation to remind Janice Harvey who wears the pantsuit at North High School.
Oh yea, and teacher’s employment now is directly tied to how they do on their evaluations and observations. This is why teachers are against “educational reform.” Because it gives power to vindictive administrators like Lisa Dyer who abuse their power to settle petty grudges. The union would put up a stink about it, but this is usually the first step towards termination. Lisa Dyer is clearly building a case against Janice Harvey.
And she isn’t just going after teachers who dissent either. She’s also going after students!! Ya got that? A grown woman is picking on kids who she is tasked with providing an education for. Certainly civic involvement is something any responsible educator would endorse. Not Lisa Dyer though. Check out this gem from Worcester Magazine:
North High School senior Leith Larson has been quoted at length in local media as a sort of unofficial spokesman for the contingent of North students who support a police presence at the school to combat a recent spate of violence. He also served on the principal’s advisory council – up until April 2, that is, when he says he was removed from the position he has held for more than a year. Larson sided with the teacher’s union after principal Lisa Dyer’s email to North faculty that strongly implied North teacher and Worcester Magazine columnist Janice Harvey’s recent column aligned her with racist viewpoints. Dyer apparently does not want students who don’t agree with her serving as advisers, especially when those students have publicly sided with a crowd whose calls for her firing get louder with every real or perceived misstep at North. Don’t cry for Larson – the JROTC student graduates soon, and will go off to greener pastures, with less political posturing.
Wow. All I can say I say is, WOW. Here you have a kid who attends school committee meetings, seems to endorse law and order in his school, and loves North High more than anyone, and he is reprimanded because his political views differ from Lisa Dyer’s. This is happening in YOUR Worcester Public Schools, and is financed by YOUR tax dollars.
Lisa Dyer has made it clear that anyone who she perceives to be aligned with Turtleboy Sports is gonna catch her wrath. She probably saw this picture of Leith from the St. Patrick’s Day parade:
And then she probably noticed that he has shared Turtleboy blogs on his Twitter. You don’t do that at North High School. Not when your principal is a vindictive fascist like Lisa Dyer.
To make matters worse the School Committee meeting tonight was SUPPOSED to be a show of force for Janice Harvey. But it didn’t happen. Only about 10 teachers showed up. I have heard from over 10 teachers who have emailed us and said in plain English that they did not show up tonight because Lisa Dyer has made it clear that she will consider it insubordination and will take retaliatory steps against them. This is what fascism looks like.
So Lenny Zelauskus, the EAW (teacher’s union) President got up to speak on behalf of Janice Harvey and North High teachers, and was immediately dismissed by our gutless, empty suit of a Mayor, Joe Petty. Here’s the 60 second audio:
First of all, I love the Red Sox analogy. You can tell Lenny’s been reading his Turtleboy, because we’ve literally made the Bobby V-Lisa Dyer-Melinda Boone analogy dozens of times. When you’re the head of a shitshow, you don’t keep your job. It doesn’t matter if it’s not your fault. You got to go.
Secondly, how fucking USELESS is Joe Petty? The guy is nothing more than a never-ending supply of political cliches. He literally brings nothing to the table. It’s embarrassing having this person as the mayor of New England’s second largest city:
Did you hear what he said towards the end there?
“I’m not gonna go there. I think we have a good principal up there and I think we have some good teachers.”
Yea, we’re not gonna go there. So we have a principal who arbitrarily humiliates her teachers publicly and calls them racist? Big deal. No reason to “go there.” So we have a school where rules aren’t enforced and kids were demanding a police officer for their own safety. Nothing to see here!!! We have a “good principal” up there. Apparently anyone with a pulse will do.
Hey Joe, how many teachers can you name at North High? What are they doing in their classrooms that make them “great?” Be specific please, since you feel so qualified to speak on the current educational climate at North High School.
Oh that’s right, you don’t actually know anything about the day to day realities of North High and just said that North High has some good teachers because it’s a good sound bite. You are literally the definition of an empty suit. But hey, keep kissing enough ass and playing machine politics and someday you might be promoted to Jim McGovern’s coffee bitch.
Schools have to run smoothly in order to function best for the kids. But Melinda Boone, Joe Petty, and Lisa Dyer give zero fucks about the kids. They’re in it for themselves. Boone protects Dyer. Petty protects Boone. Petty gets re-elected. And they all get paid.
Meanwhile it’s the kids who get taken to the woodshop. Look what they’re all wearing in support of their English teacher:
How long until Lisa Dyer bans those things? You know Fuhrer Dyer can’t be standing for that sort of free speech in her school. Nobody tell her about
The bottom line is that three things need to happen in order to fix this:
1) North High parents need to demand change. This is your kid’s school, and it’s being run by a tyrant fascist who bullies your kids and their teachers. When parents yell loud enough, schools listen. So yell. Because your kids deserve better.
2) Voters need to let Joe Petty, and any school committee member who still supports Melinda Boone (Monfredo, Novick, Ramirez, Foley) that if they continue to support these incompetent boobs, then they will no longer be in office come November. I can’t stress how important voting is in local elections. Every two years people bitch and whine about our elected officials, and then the same jackwagons get elected again. Show them that the Turtleboy Nation has been watching and then we’re not going to stand for it anymore. They are scared shitless of what we can do at the polls.
3) Teachers need to take more direct forms of resistance. If you’re not willing to fight, then what’s the point of paying union dues? Seriously, you guys are acting like you work at Walmart. If you stick together, they can’t do shit to you. They’re not going to replace an entire faculty. As you saw tonight, Joe Petty clearly thinks Lenny Z is a joke. He doesn’t take anything he says seriously because he knows there’s no muscle behind it. Let Jackass Joe know that he’s wrong. The Turtleboy staff is calling for a “work-to-contract” situation. Walk into the building together at the exact minute that your contract says you must be there, and walk out together at the exact minute the contract says you can leave. Nothing more for free until Lisa Dyer is gone. That should send them a message.
Solidarity with the Worcester teachers.
