You gotta see the ending to the Division 1 boy’s state championship semifinal between Franklin and Springfield Central at the DCU Center. Franklin was down by 3 with 20 seconds left and the ball. Kid buries a 3 from the corner to tie it. Springfield has a shot to end it right there, misses a shot, and then a kid from Springfield grabs the loose ball and tosses it in the hoop well after the clock expired:

What a finish. As you can see, he clearly did not get off the shot in time.

Yet the refs said he did at first, causing a shitstorm:

A controversial call at the end of regulation in Central boys basketball’s loss to Franklin on Wednesday night erased what initially appeared to be a game-winner made by Golden Eagles senior guard Josh Pressley. Pressley released a shot just as time expired, appearing to beat the buzzer by a split second and make the basket. The basket was initially ruled by referees to have counted, breaking a tie to make the score 53-51. Central players and coaches stormed the court in celebration, which lasted approximately 40 seconds. However, after conferring together at center court, game officials waved off the basket, instead ruling Pressley did not release shot in time. The game then proceeded to overtime. Franklin went on to win 60-54.

According to MIAA state tournament director Rita Castagna, the official who initially made the ruling had an obstructed view and asked the other officials for assistance. Three of the four officials, including the alternate referee, ruled Pressley did not get the shot off in time after a brief delay.

“When the three officials get together, there are points of references,” Castagna said in a phone interview with MassLive. “Two of them said it was no good. The official who called it to begin with was a little blinded. When the ball went in the basket, he then went to the other two officials to ask if they saw anything different.”

Alright, first of all, how incompetent can you be if you missed that call the first time? The official who called it was “a little blindsided” according to the MIAA hack who charged parents $15 a pop to watch this game. Except he wasn’t blindsided at all. And as you can see, the kid clearly did not get that shot off in time. This is the exact moment the clock was at 0.0:

Notice the ref standing right there. And the kid took two more steps with the ball before even beginning to release it:

Probably the easiest call I’ve ever seen. Not even remotely close to getting the shot off in time. And the official who said the basket is good is standing right there at the bottom of the screen, looking DIRECTLY AT the players and clearly seeing the clock has expired.

Luckily Springfield administrators and coaches are handling it professionally. LOL. Just kidding, they’re whining about how the game was stolen from them:

Springfield Public Schools Athletic Director Mike Martin said he explored the possibility of protesting the game, but was told he could not. Castagna confirmed that MIAA rules say Central would not be allowed to protest the call. There is no video replay at MIAA games. Central coach Darryl Denson said he was not given an official explanation for the call.

“It’s really hard when you fight 32 minutes and a call is made,” he said. “I’m not an official, so I don’t know how it’s called in real time. The referee said it was good and the minutes later it was called off.

“It’s hard to explain that to my kids. It’s a good game. I think things could’ve went a little differently. It bothers me because I feel like it was taken from the kids.”

Taken from the kids? Newsflash – it wasn’t their’s to be taken in the first place. A referee made an egregiously bad call, but luckily his coworkers were there to bail him out, thus preventing the wrong team from winning the game.

But he does make a fair point about explaining it to the kids. I mean, imagine playing for Springfield and thinking you’re going to the State Championship on the most insane finish of all time? You pig pile your teammates and go nuts, only to find out that you never got the shot off in the first place.

Hard to come back from that. Sorry kids, looks like the ref is completely incompetent. Maybe if it was close to being an actual buzzer beater they wouldn’t have talked it over. But because it was just such a God awful call they simply had to overrule him.

Here’s my question – with all the money the MIAA steals from schools, how come they can’t invest in a simple replay system for big games like this? Because if those three other refs didn’t come to their senses and overrule the moron who made this call in the first place, then the game would’ve ended right there and the wrong team would’ve won. Oh that’s right, they have to pay a bunch of executives six figure salaries and enforce dumb rules for fans in an attempt to make sure no one has any fun.

    1) TV clock doesn’t matter worth a shit, this is local TV, it isn’t synchronized Stratum 2 clocks like on professional sports feed. The score is wrong also. Big deal. What matters is the backboard.
    2) I watched this over and over in slow motion, and damn, it’s CLOSE. Watch his hand and the board turning red. F the horn. Speed of Sound / Microphones have latency, electrons matter.
    3) These kids are nearly adults. Understanding that a play is called back is part of life. Deal. They should have worked hard in OT. Fucking grow a set.
    4) This is high school basketball, not the NBA Finals. Of course for many of the Springfield kids, this is the highlight of their lives, a stepping stone if you will, to the drug dealing and prostitution that plagues the city of Springfield. (Laurie Bonano, the heroin dealer, is a great example)

In fairness to the ref who made the original call, notice that the backboard did not turn red when the clock hit :00. It took an extra couple seconds to turn red and the kid got the shot off as it was turning red. If the ref is watching the kid, he can’t also be watching the clock. He was probably counting on the backboard to turn red at exactly :00.

In the end, the refs huddled and they got the call right…and that is what matters most.

The time on tv is not an official clock. The light comes on when the official clock hits zero. Ref in the middle isn’t keying on the clock in that situation. That would be the “trail” official on the opposite side near half court. Right call was eventually made and that is all that matters
