Everyone’s up in arms because sports radio yahoo Michael Felger said that deceased former MLB star pitcher Roy Halladay “got what he deserved” when he crashed his toy plane in the Gulf of Mexico and died yesterday. Here’s the audio of the 11 minute rant. And here’s the summarized highlights from Deadspin:

The entire rant is pretty rough, so here are some moments of note:

  • “It just sorta angers me. You care that little about your life? Or the life of your family? Your little joyride is that important to you?”
  • “‘[In a voice mocking Halladay] Weeeee! Weeeee! Yeah man look at the G-force on this! I’m Maverick. Yeah man, look at this it’s so cool!’ And you die. Splat. And it’s over. So you’re that guy? You have to do that?”
  • “To the point, now, where that guy is like the bad guy to me. You got this family, and you’re gonna screw around in this little toy plane?”
  • “‘[In a voice mocking Halladay] Weee! Oh look I just landed on the water, everybody. I’m gonna tweet it!’ Splat. You’re dead. Two kids. Moron.”
  • “I find that offensive, that you are that cavalier about life.”
  • “I’m sorry dude, you’re on your own. I got no sympathy for you.”
  • “If that’s how you’re wired, and that’s how you die? Bon voyage.”
  • “I don’t blame the plane for the fact that the guy wanted to dive-bomb through mountains. Idiot!”
  • “Idiot!”
  • “If I die helicopter skiing, you have the right to do the exact same thing I’m doing to Roy Halladay. He got what he deserved.”

Apparently unsatisfied with the repugnance of his takes, Felger decided to let his listeners know that he is glad Dale Earnhardt died during a NASCAR race. “Was it Dale Earnhardt who died? The race car driver who died? I root for the wall. I really do. That ain’t no tragedy … I’m supposed to feel bad for you? Give me a break. Oh God,” he said.

Just to be perfectly clear, I have zero problem with this, even though I generally hate Felger. This is why he serves a purpose. Because he’s not afraid to say what millions of people are thinking. Roy Halladay cavalierly threw away his own life because he enjoys the thrill of driving this stupid death trap of a plane. He has kids that should’ve come first. When you have kids your life all of a sudden becomes a million times more valuable. Not because you’re a better person, but because human beings need you for sustenance and love. If you’re a 20 year old with no kids, go ahead and jump off a cliff. Doesn’t really matter. But if you’re still doing this shit with two boys at home it’s a selfish act. Period. And the fact that you’re dead shouldn’t protect you from people like Felger saying the truth.

God I feel so dirty defending Michael freaking Felger. The same guy we banned from Worcester.

Nevertheless the Internet outrage patrol is looking for heads!!

The worst is this whiny little bitch who simply does not understand that he has the right to switch the station to WEEI:

Then again tuning into Ned Flanders from 2-6 on WEEI isn’t really any better.

Newsflash – it’s their job to give their opinions all day long, every day of the week. Eventually one of their opinions will offend you. It doesn’t mean we should take them off the air, because censoring speech that makes you feel uncomfortable is as anti-American as Rosie O’Donnell.

I just completely reject the idea that because you’re dead we can’t talk about you anymore. More importantly, it’s insane that so many people are thinking this, yet you can’t say it on the radio. Think of how fucked up that is. A guy who is paid to say what he thinks, isn’t allowed to say what he’s thinking if it hurts your precious feelz.

Big Jim Murray, a ride or die turtle rider, put it best:

“Complicit.” Like he’s a Nazi collaborator. Get over yourself shithead. Big Jim couldn’t have put it any better. You deserve nothing. I personally wouldn’t have done what Felger did, but I 100% respect his right to say it because I’m a free speech absolutist. And our biggest enemies are people who use this bullshit economic warfare to try to stifle opinions they don’t agree with, when they can just change the channel or stop reading our blog.

Luckily Felger is not the type to apologize or backdown, and he’s basically the main reason 98.5 is so successful, so firing him isn’t an option. As annoying as he is, you realize how much worse it can get wen his lapdog Tony Mazz is in charge.

And so it comes out Halladay was on speed, had opioids and Ambien in his blood test results, plus some alcohol. Now call Felger a hater, Go ahead, do it now assholes.

I’ve been a private pilot for 12 years. I’ve owned a Cessna 172, then a Cessna 182, and currently a Light Sport aircraft. They are not “human death traps” if flown and maintained correctly. Most pilots are very interested in accident reports because there’s usually a lesson in self-preservation to be learned, and this one is a prime example. I DO NOT fly like Halladay was flying in that video – that’s why I’m still alive after 1,000+ hours of aviating.

Video shows idiotic maneuvers and extremely poor piloting. Just because the plane is capable of water landing does not mean that your low-houred ass knows how to do it repeatably.

CFIT results. (Controlled Flight Into Terrain)

as I child of somebody that did something stupid and irresponsible and died before I was born, yea, Felger is not wrong. when you become a parent you are so much more than just a person, i lost out on a lot of love and happiness because my dad got in a car drunk with his friend. I feel bad for Halladay and his family, but don’t throw shit at this guy cause he sees the bigger picture.

Play stupid games, win stupid prizes. Drive like an idiot, you die. Fly a plane like a moron, you die. Even the guys who do that shit for a living occasionally make mistakes and die – like the Blue Angels pilot a year or two ago, guaranteed he had more time pre-flighting than Halliday had hours in the cockpit. Is it right to publicly shame someone who died doing something stupid? Eh, who’s to say? It’s not polite to speak ill of the dead and all that – but I can tell you from the days when I was in the ambulance we did the same thing after a call where somebody did something STUPID and got hurt or died. It happens, get over it!

I don’t know if I’d say he deserved to die, but I agree with Felger’s overall point. You dont’ do stupid shit like this if you have a wife and kids. Luckily for them he was filthy rich.

No different than when some ahole jumps off a building with a parachute and the chute doesn’t open because he did a crappy job of packing it.
Too bad, so sad, but all done.

I used to drive a dragster and was told by my cousin who rode bulls that I was crazy to drive that fast. I told him I had a helmet, fire suit, respirator, roll cage, safety harness, etc, what did he have? Two months later a bull threw his head back and his horn pushed my cousin’s upper teeth up into his sinus cavity. Big ouch. I had a motor explode in front of me, steering tire popped from debris on the track, a serious wheel stand and a hard right hand turn from a previous runners oil patch, but never an injury due to the use of safety equipement. We all take risks of one kind or another, but some are more risky than others. It still needs to be left up to the individual how they want to go after it.

Society is so sensitive! A man, fairly new to flying, takes his new $200k sport plane out, flies aggressively, and lo and behold, crashes. He did get what he deserved, just like the 18 year old that just gets his motorcycle license, drives 100 mph, loses control and dies; live by the sword, die by the sword.

Roy Halliday had no business flying aggressively, give the man his Darwin Award. Do I feel bad for his family, sure, but Roy should have grown up and been a more responsible adult. This was not even pilot error, it was pilot idiocy. Tragic yes, but 100% preventable.

Is there anything more phony than the media reaction when a famous person dies suddenly? They all throw up on each other trying to sound thoughtful, sensitive and articulate.

Felger went 180 degrees from that.

Twitter blowing up, about typical Boston, blah blah, and Mike’s just a Jew from Wisconsin, sopping up all the attention.

This is the best thing to happen to Felger and Mazz. People aren’t going to boycott, they’re gong to LISTEN to hear what comes out of his mouth next! Brilliant rhetoric

    Deserved????

Took a risk, no different from riding a motorcycle, there is a risk. Illegal runs a stop sign and drags your corpse under the bumper of her unregistered, uninsured minivan for half a mile.

What do Felger and turtleboy deserve?

Yeah and those motor cycle riders that ride like complete assholes doing 100 mph and weaving in and out of traffic….they deserve it when they rear end a tractor trailer or hit a tree… same thing with people who text and drive and go off the road or hit a tree. People are so soft. Have responsibility

A pilot once said…there are old pilots and there are bold pilots….but there are never old – bold pilots.

He got what he deserved. Felgah was 100% right. You want to fly like a douche then do it somewhere else but not where you are putting the public’s life in danger by flying that low and close to people in the water, on boats or on shore.
