Fox 25: The North Attleborough High School girls’ soccer coaches have resigned after an incident at practice. Superintendent Suzan Cullen said in a statement that at a practice on Oct. 2, there was a drill that caused “confusion and concern for some players.” The district investigated after learning of the drill and concluded it “did not reflect the core values of the district.”
Dan Labonte has a daughter on the team, and told FOX25 coaches had the girls do a drill similar to what was done in the movie “Facing the Giants.” The drill involved blindfolding the girls, having them bear crawl, and speaking words of encouragement to motivate them. Unlike the movie scene, players did not have to carry their teammates on their backs.
“Unfortunately he used a drill that didn’t translate very well to a woman’s soccer program, but I know he was remorseful when he realized it was going as well as he expected,” Labonte said.
Head coach Glenn Pasquel resigned, along with his assistant and the J.V. coach in a show of solidarity. “Unfortunately, my good intentions of using a motivational exercise that I saw have been misinterpreted by some. I am humbled by the outpouring of support I have received from parents, players, and the school administration over the last few days,” Pasquel told FOX25 in an email.
One high school student told FOX25 the drill made some of the girls uncomfortable. “They saw it as an attack, something emotional to go through, and I think it was just taken the wrong and the coach was a little confused when they were all crying,” high school senior Erik Clements said.
Every day I feel like society can’t get any softer. Then I read stories like this and I realize how much lower the bar can go. I don’t know what bear crawls have to do with soccer, and I don’t care. If the coach tells you to do them, then you do them. If you don’t like it then go join the ballet or hang out with the goth kids. This kid’s quote says it all:
“They saw it as an attack, something emotional to go through, and I think it was just taken the wrong way and the coach was a little confused when they were all crying.”
I don’t know much about North Attleborough girl’s soccer, but after reading that I have to believe that they must suck. Who would ever view bear crawls as an “attack?” Yes, bear crawls do indeed suck, but since when is practice supposed to be fun. You were confused? About what? Why you were doing them. Newsflash – it doesn’t matter why you were doing them. Coach told you to do them so shut up and get down on the ground. If that makes you cry……well, you’re already playing soccer so I guess you’re in the right sport.
I dunno, is there something missing here? Aaron Hernandez lived in North Attleborough, and he might be the most vicious serial killer of all time. If they can survive him they can survive these bear crawls. I’m hoping that they were crying because their shirts all came off when they were blindfolded and they thought the whole thing was creepy. That could easily happen during bear crawls on account of gravity. If he was fired for that, it’s still wrong but it’s not nearly as bad as getting fired because bear crawls were too hard. Toughen up ladies.
