Sometimes there is justice in this world, and yesterday proved it as Clemson, Alabama, Ohio State, and Notre Dame were announced as the teams that would make the 4 team college playoff if the season ended right now.
All the Notre Dame hating butthurts are up in arms about it
But they 110% got this one right. Here’s why:
Iowa and Baylor are undefeated because they haven’t played anyone. With Iowa it doesn’t really matter. They’re in the Big 10 and they’re gonna have to play Ohio State in the Big 10 Championship. Whoever wins that game gets in and whoever loses doesn’t. That will have no effect on Notre Dame being in.
But Baylor is in the Big 12, the conference that got shafted last year because they don’t have a conference championship game. So is Oklahoma State, who sits at #8 and remains undefeated after slaughtering undefeated TCU this weekend. But Baylor has beaten absolutely nobody:
While OSU’s only win against anyone who matters was last week’s win over TCU at home:
Meanwhile Notre Dame’s only loss came on the road to the #1 ranked team in the country – Clemson. They lost that game 24-22 because they missed two point conversions TWICE, because Brian Kelly was apparently HIGH that game and went for two when he had absolutely no reason to. They’ve also beaten 5 teams that were at one point ranked this year (G. Tech, USC, Temple, Navy, Pittsburgh)
You’ll notice their common opponent with Oklahoma State is Texas. Oklahoma State beat Texas 30-27. Notre Dame massacred Texas 38-3. There’s no real question who’s had the best season of these four (ND, OSU, Baylor, Iowa) teams.
There’s a million things that could happen between now and the playoff. If Alabama loses in the SEC Championship to Florida, or if they stumble against Mississippi State (both of whom are ranked), they would be out. If Ohio State (who hasn’t beaten anyone) loses to Michigan before the Big 10 Championship, then they’re out too. Clemson could be left out if they lose the ACC Championship to North Carolina.
The only one of those scenarios that has any real chance of happening is Ohio State losing. Bama and Clemson will both be in the playoff, and likely so will Ohio State.
So if that happens (Bama, Ohio State, and Clemson run the table), AND both Notre Dame and either Baylor or Oklahoma State run the table, then who gets in? Are they really gonna leave out an undefeated Big 12 champion? If Notre Dame runs the table it will mean they won AT #7 Stanford. If Baylor wins out it will mean they beat Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, and TCU – all of which are ranked.
The answer is that in that scenario Notre Dame is in and it’s not even close. Notre Dame isn’t in a conference, but their game against Stanford is basically a play-in game. Call it the REAL Pac 12 Championship. They’re kicking the snot out of everyone right now, and their only loss could’ve easily gone either way against the top ranked team in America. But it probably won’t even matter because Turtleboy guarantees that both Baylor and Oklahoma State will lose a game before the end of the season.
The impressive part is they’re doing this all with a backup freshmen quarterback who they had no intention of playing this year. But when you have the best linebacker in the country, the best receiver in the country, and one of the best coaches in the country, none of that matters.
And it couldn’t have worked out better either. If Notre Dame gets Clemson in the playoff there is a 0.0% chance they lose that game in a rematch. The only team they can’t beat is Alabama, so the plan then becomes for Ohio State to beat Bama for us. Then we win the National Championship and avenge the abortion that was the 2013 BCS National Championship.
