The interwebs has been buzzing about this idiot’s Facebook post:

Obviously this social justice warrior is just trolling for attention, and he got exactly what he wanted. Here’s Bryton Mellot’s explanation as to why he decided to burn the American flag on the Fourth of July:

In this moment, being proud of my country is to ignore the atrocities committed against people of color, people living in poverty, people who identify as women, and against my own queer community on a daily basis. I do not have pride in my country. I am overwhelmingly ashamed, and I will demonstrate my feelings accordingly. #ArrestMe.”

A new page has been created on Facebook that seems pretty reasonable:

Seriously, can’t remember seeing Internet backlash like this before over one moron. Look, Turtleboy is just as patriotic as the next guy, but why anyone would waste their time getting mad at this dolt is beyond me. He was arrested for it, because Illinois recently passed a law against burning the flag. But part of being free is having the freedom to be a moron. And that’s all Bryton Mellott is doing.

Last week we published this story about the son of a Coventry, RI fire district director who posed for pictures while stepping on American flags:

But this was more of a relevant story because his father has power in town. His old man compared firefighters to ISIS and has banned American flags from fire trucks. You can be a complete moron in America and disrespect the flag, but you can’t be a fire district head at the same time. This is much worse than some random nobody from Illinois burning a flag for attention.

If you really wanna get back at people like this there is a simple solution – bother their employer. The kid is a manager at Walmart. I’m sure the store has been flooded with calls already since millions have seen this picture, and I’m sure they’re going to cut him loose if they haven’t done so already. That’s the American way.

Honestly, the only thing worse than morons like Bryton Mellott are the tough guys who think they’re Captain America on Facebook. Like this guy:

$50 says he doesn’t show up. Hey genius, we don’t have to agree with his speech, but he has a right to it regardless. He has a right to be ignorant. He has a right to live in one of the most LGBT friendly countries on earth and still complain about being persecuted. He has a right to complain about living in a transphobic country that gives accolades to people like Bruce Jenner because they start cross dressing. He has a right to complain that a government that doles out welfare to pretty much anyone who wants it isn’t doing enough to help poor people. He has a right to ironically burn a flag that symbolizes his freedom to burn that flag.

I’m also seeing a lot of veterans telling this kid that they’re gonna kick his ass because they knew people who were killed in combat defending this kid’s freedoms. But that’s exactly the point. America destroys fascism. That’s the entire purpose of our existence. So every soldier who has ever given their life in defense of freedom and democracy, has done so in order to protect all of our freedoms, including the right to not appreciate those sacrifices. Don’t let it get to you. I’d rather live in a country where morons like this don’t understand how stupid they look, than live in a country where the government can arbitrarily arrest you for voicing your stupid opinions.

So yea, get over it. This kid is a moron, but if you think you have a right to kick the shit out of him for it, you’re wrong. No one is impressed by your Facebook badassery.

If he’s going to use his freedoms to burn the American flag for attention, at least wear clothes that fit and do not accentuate your gunt.

The law is very clearly unconstitutional. Texas v. Johnson (1989) was about the act of burning a flag. It might be vile, but it is protected. There was a constitutional amendment proposed in the wake of this… it went nowhere. Sorry, but you have the first amendment right to burn a flag.

And before you call me a liberal fag etc, Antonin Scalia ruled in support of Gregory Lee Johnson

This is America in 2016. There is no longer such thing as freedom of speech or thought for that matter. Bryton will get his own bad kharma in due course. The best of course would be living somewhere outside of America to see what the world is really like.

My first thought. Back about forty years ago or more. They would all be up at the Worcester state hospital for the duration.
