According to Worcester Magazine, a group of protesters will be holding some sort of protest/vigil outside of Turtleboy Sports’ sponsor The Gun Parlor on Saturday from Noon to 1 PM on Saturday. Apparently 1 hour on the weekend is supposed to send some sort of message. It’s being held by the Saints Francis & Therese Catholic Worker community, and it’s being done to denounce the accessibility of guns in America, particularly in light of the latest mass shooting in San Bernadino.

First of all, the Saints Francis & Therese Catholic Worker community is a legitimate organization that does a lot of good in our community that goes unheralded. It’s run by the Schaeffer-Duffy’s – Scott and his wife Claire, who despite having very radical political views, are well intentioned, good and decent people. They are a grassroots organization that has done actual volunteer work that has benefitted the poor communities in Worcester.

Screen Shot 2015-12-01 at 10.29.56 AM

With that said this protest is dumb and misguided. They’re picking The Gun Parlor because of it’s nine-lane shooting range’s flyers and billboard promoting firearm rentals and machine guns that customers can try out before purchasing.

But the bottom line is that the Gun Parlor has a right to exist. They’re a legitimate business, paying legitimate property taxes, and selling a constitutionally protected product to the public. If you don’t like the fact that they are legally allowed to sell guns in Worcester, then petition your lawmakers to overturn the second amendment. But don’t take it out on the small business that’s peddling a completely legal service.

1795791_816136598412627_1325434770_n

Meanwhile the City of Worcester is about to start a needle exchange program so that we can enable junkies to continue their habits with clean needles. Where’s the protest of that? What’s the difference? If the argument is that drugs kill people, then by that logic isn’t it the needle that kills drug addicts?

And what about abortion? The whole argument around abortion is that an individual might have a moral issue with abortion, but they’re not being forced to get one. They just don’t have the right to tell other people that they can’t. How is it any different with buying guns? Don’t want a gun? Don’t get one.

Screen Shot 2015-11-11 at 10.29.52 AM

Look, Turtleboy is not a gun owner. Zero interest in owning a gun. People are always telling me to get one, but I just don’t see the need. The fact of the matter is that Turtleboy is lazy and disorganized around the house and has small, mischievous children, who are obsessed with grabbing the most dangerous things they can find at all times. I literally spend my entire weekend following around a two year old and thwarting his suicide attempts. Make no doubt about it – a gun in the Turtleboy household is a million times more likely to hurt a member of the Turtleboy household than it is a bad guy or the King of England.

m27g1t

When the Sandy Hook massacre happened a couple years back, I, like many others, was pretty vocal about the need for more gun control. But it wasn’t because of what happened necessarily, it was the NRA’s reaction to it. Their response was, “more guns,” which I thought was slightly insane.

I also thought a lot of of the rhetoric after Sandy Hook was hilariously dumb. For instance, there’s a lot of reasons you can use to justify your right to own a firearm. But the whole, “I need a gun to protect me from the tyrannical government” is one you need to just stop saying right now. It’s embarrassing. Newsflash – the government has NUCLEAR BOMBS. If they want to, they can destroy you and your gun ain’t gonna do shit. The government will always win a fight civilians who resist them. Always.

unnamed-22

But I just know way too many decent, law-abiding, responsible citizens who own guns, to simply characterize gun owners as far right wing lunatics. And I know that they’re not the problem in this country. Hell, Turtleboy actually earned rifle shooting merit badge at Treasure Valley back in the 90’s. And it was fun as hell and extremely safe.

Look, I think most rational people can agree that you can’t have a completely laissez-faire gun market. Guns don’t need to be outlawed, but common sense regulations are something that I thought we could all agree on. The Gun Parlor is regulated and exists in a state that has some of the strictest gun laws in the country. So what’s the problem here? These mass shooters in California more than likely bought their guns in a state like Nevada, Arizona, or Oregon, that almost no restrictions. So go protest out there instead of wasting your time on small potatoes like The Gun Parlor.

I think at the end of the day both sides have to be more reasonable on this issue. Conservatives have to understand that small restrictions on the sale of guns doesn’t mean that the second amendment is going anywhere. And liberals have to concede that if we stopped selling guns, the gun issue wouldn’t magically disappear. After all, we made drugs illegal and how’s that working out for ya? The bottom line is that we have to find a common ground, but OBVIOUSLY that ain’t gonna happen because this particular issue brings out the polar extremes on both sides of the coin.

This is why we don’t blog about gun control. The end.

P.S. H-S Trading is another Turtleboy Sports sponsor who sells guns and ammo legally. Why aren’t the hippies protesting them? Because if I’m a business owner there is nothing I want more than a hippie protest or boycott of my store. It’s literally the best thing that can ever happen to your business. Guaranteed The Gun Parlor sees record sales this weekend. Are thet only protesting the Gun Parlor because it’s in Worcester, while H-S Trading is in Auburn? Do Worcester protesters have an electric collar that doesn’t let them protest outside of the Woo?

I bought a nice handgun from this store today. I was looking for a small semi-auto, they had it, price was fair, I bought it. The reason I traveled from Baldwinville to Worcester: because the Gun Parlor advertised on TBS. Every hippie protestor is another gun sold. I’ve got a lot of money, keep protesting and I’ll keep buying.

First, I will admit that I did not read all the comments. What I am going to state is probably similar to other comments. Also, none of what I am stating is intended to undermine the tragic events that do occur with guns. Too many lives have been needlessly lost due to them.

Yet, it is NOT the fault of responsible businesses or gun owners that these occur. The person that is holding the gun is the one responsible! NO I do not think when a minor has lost a life due to finding a gun and playing with it that is the child’s fault. That is on the owner of the gun. Hence, I would not put that owner in the classification of responsible.

Law abiding, responsible gun owners SHOULD NOT be punished for the crimes of others. Gun parlors, sportsmen clubs, etc provide a safe environment, education for those learning to use a gun and follow the laws to keep the guns out of the hands of the wrong people.

CRIMINALS are NOT responsible, law abiding citizens! Taking away the right for the majority of those in the country will not change the gun related crimes.

I don’t have time to research statistics that you claim exist. I’m very informed about what’s going on out there with multiple points of media.

I simply think guns on a broader scale are doing great damage to our country and nobody is willing to do anything to try and stop it. like use of smart guns, etc…

Sure I’ve texted and speeded before, and thankfully haven’t killed anyone, but I also won’t mind when technology catches up and won’t allow it to happen through use of eye scanners, attention monitors, etc.. and cars in the next few years will be unable to get into collisions to active sensors and brake technology. However I have a feeling that not only will we still be having the same problems in the future with gun violence, but it will continue to get worse.

And earlier when you mentioned the drug labs above or below me, chances are when I saw something shady I’d be moving very quickly, and I’d probably do the same if I saw someone walking up or downstairs with a bunch of guns all the time. I would just be a little too concerned for the immediate potential very local threat. I think that’s a lot different than your overall fear of our government coming for you and your family’s guns. I think many concerns are warranted because they actually sometimes happen in this country, what you seem worried about never has.

Commonsense would be attacking and killing Isis here and abroad.Or God forbid preventing them from settling here. We never should accept as normal that isis is allowed to roam freely in this country. And why not stomp out street gangs (hint maybe for once some serious jail time as a start).

  • Publius
    December 5, 2015 at 6:57 pm

It is frightening that a few so willingly ignore the scourge of street gangs and now ISIS in our backyards. Blame guns or even knives.Remember a few years ago our impotent city council wanted to ban knives. This was a “serious” discussion. Rushton Petty led the way until someone slapped commonsense at the dolts. Under this administration we are now in serious danger at work at the mall and even at home.

You are far more likely to be blown up by the guy cooking meth above or below you in your three decker than you are to be hit by a round from an AR ripping through multiple houses LMAO..Would you like to find some links of people shot by neighbors negligent discharge as I can post you about 300 links of people blown up or burned alive by drug making explosions by a neighbor

Like I sad this week its magazine capacity..Next week its video games because the libtards also claim those make people kill people…it wont stop or change a dam thing

Everyone loves to put restrictions on things…Until there “Things” come under fire

I am shocked we can still buy a pressure cooker..you know the same ones the military uses!! Is it really worth us having tender food cooked at a faster pace when that same device can be used to kill people ??

    • Ty
      December 5, 2015 at 8:54 pm

You’re wrong. There may be more likely a chance to be killed in a fire perhaps, but not due to drug making neighbor explosions. They probably kill themselves a lot yes but not innocent neighbors. It would totally suck to lose your possessions but you’re probably Alive.

You say this week it’s this and next week it’s that, with little or no actual grievances to cite. Mag capacity is really the only and best argument you have. Why does it matter when there isn’t a capacity on the actual number of magazines you can actually own. Why are you really not able to do that you want to do?

“common sense”? Last time I ever visit this liberal infested blog. Common sense are the the exact words the come out of dems playbook when they try to pass more gun control. Although, what do I expect, this blog is based in Worcester where they have the most anti-gun police chief in all of Massachusetts.

I have to disagree with you. Rifle shooting at treasure valley was a lot of fun, but getting the merit badge was a huge pain in the you know what. Except that Hitler didn’t come to power through force. He was elected. And once in power he built the German state into a gigantic cult of personality.

So, please try paying attention in history class. No amount of guns would have stopped Hitler’s rise to power, because the German people thought he could solve the country’s massive financial crisis. And once they had food in their stomachs again, they were willing to go along with the rest of his insanity.

How did the law of no texting and driving work (5700 deaths proven last year)?? How did the gun ban in France work ?? It worked great for the terrorist who got to run around a club killing people while police who do not even carry a gun sat outside and listened to people getting murdered waiting on there version of swat…How is the gun ban in Australia working..Please do an article on that if you are not afraid of having your views changed

“No American needs to own an Assault rifle” Does any American need to own a Corvette ? And Audi or a Suburu impresa or even a V6 or V8 ?? You only need to go the speed limit so lets all go out and buy Carollas with 4 cylinders that are governed not to go over 65…After all deaths attributed to vehicles far out weighs gun deaths since the invention of both

Medical errors killed 194,461 people in 2015!!!!! Do you smoke…drink or eat red meat ??Might be time to ban or restrict those

what restrictions on guns are you really complaining about? you can buy the same weaponry as used by our heroes on the battlefield. Isn’t that a little bizarre? would you like a bazooka? a rocket launcher? your own tank that you can fire the cannon? what exactly has been the huge burden to your in your life involving weapons.

My concern with some of the guns allowed out there is that they can become a hazard to others around them.
I wouldn’t like the idea of the loose cannon living below or above me having an AR which will rip through a few nearby houses too.

Preach it TB. This article is gold. I can’t stand gun-nuts who think we need militias to protect ourselves from the Government in the ultimate showdown. Guess what. Your tax dollars fund the greatest military on Earth. You would get seriously fucked up in a second, blown to bits next to your precious rifle / hand gun. What a joke.

What’s worse is all these bleeding heart liberals that think slapping a few more laws on the books is going to solve the problem of violence. Did you see what I called it? VIOLENCE. Guns are not the problem, VIOLENCE is the problem. Did we blame the Paris attacks on guns? No we blamed that shit on psychopathic terrorists, BECAUSE THAT’S EXACTLY WHAT IT IS. People who are out of their fucking minds and think, “Hell, I’m bored and/or pissed off at the world. Why don’t I go end a bunch of innocent lives.” Go ahead, take their guns. Homemade bombs are not difficult to make. Just ask the UNABOMBER. That motherfucker lived in a shack and claimed all technology is evil and contributing to the massive downfall of the human race (which may very well be true). He killed and maimed a fuck ton of people by building bombs out of matches and rubber bands.

Why are the Saints Francis & Therese Catholic Worker community protesting a gun shop? Because they don’t have the guts to protest in front of a mosque or Islamic cultural center, and that would disturb their ecumenical “sensibilities.”

San Bernadino isn’t about guns, any more than it is about pipes (as in the pipe bombs the terrorists built).

They want to jump on the hippie bandwagon (which, btw, is where most Catholics fall on the political spectrum, except maybe in the area of abortion).

It must be a drain on you mentally each day to actually think you would be in a scenario where this might actually occur. How much time do you spend thinking and worrying about this? Doesn’t it affect your overall mentality each day?

So walk us through it for a second, is it the local police that work with your community on a regular basis that will “come for you”? and why would they “come for you”?

or is it the state police? or FBI? who the hell cares that much about you that you would need protection from the government? really?

and if you did hold up with your family in some sort of standoff, how does that all play out?

Why isn’t fox news putting on the tv every night all the examples of the “good guys with guns” taking out the “bad guys with guns” besides the police situations? I’m a police supporter and fully support force when necessary so since they are the professionals I leave the job up to them. I just think that with that attitude that a gun is the answer in the hands of some highly irresponsible people.

I’m in the field of science and the statistics of gun accidents vs. instances of armed citizens saving the day just don’t bear out, it’s virtually a lot more likely to be struck by lighting, I just don’t let it affect my mentality. I, like TB would like to have a firearm primarily for target shooting as sport in my case, but also happen to have small children which is why I won’t take the risk at this time.

For every gun crime/homicide reported there are about 13 crimes/attacks stopped by law abiding gun owners according to recent research statistics Mr scientist. Do some reading before you comment, it’s the studious and responsible thing to do.

        December 5, 2015 at 11:19 am

Well Worcester Resident if there are say that the average number of gun deaths per year in this country is 8,000 to 10,000. That would put your estimate of the number of incidents stopped by regular citizens with their own guns at roughly 115,000 events per year or 315 every day. don’t you think we’d hear more about these types of events and cite actual examples on say Fox News.

and I hate to burst your bubbles guys, but your about 200 years too late when it comes to actually having a shot in hell vs. your government. When everybody had single shot pea shooters that took a minute to reload.

Can you seriously love your country when you actually think in the back of your mind that they’re coming to get you? It’s like having a dog that you actually think might maul you in the middle of the night while you sleep. Can you really love that dog?

Even many police chiefs have essentially said the best defense is your own ability to defend yourself. It’s no longer chicken little. It is here under this administration. What kind of President talks global warming when even the french know it is time to fight and kill the enemy. And why will this President refuse to acknowledge ISIS attack in San Bernardino? Not going to wade too deep in here, I’m too fatigued already by the world: but it is interesting to note that the Catholic Worker House/Sts. Francis + Therese House do actually oppose abortion. In other words, unlike most on that end of things, they are consistent in opposing both the death penalty and abortion, etc.

I’ve known them for decades, and they feed, shelter, clothe, assist and actually care for the neediest of the needy, the most broken and forgotten. Stop by the house on Mason Street sometime and see firsthand.

Nobody’s perfect, certainly not me, but I give them credit for “walking the walk”.

I have to disagree with you Turtleboy, especially with the part about it being pointless about having a gun to protect from the tyrannical government. Yeah, the US government has nukes, but I’d be hard pressed to believe they’re going to drop them in their own country. The government wouldn’t be facing a large standing Army like in the Civil War, it would be small pockets of resistance all over the country. Iraq is smaller than Texas. It took us over 150,000 US troops to effectively “secure” Iraq. How many would it take to secure the country?

    • December 4, 2015 at 8:11 pm

It’s just silly to think it would come to that. Want a gun for hunting? Sure. For personal protection? Makes sense. For a doomsday Hunger Games scenario? Do better.

TB, I love ya man. I really do, you do awesome work. But like freshpond stated, you’re a bit off on this one.

The reality is that our government is getting more tyrannical, not less. I don’t trust them, at all. The DOJ being sent to investigate every shooting of a black man, regardless of facts. The IRS being militarized against conservative 501c applications. The standing orders to not deport illegals caught. They’re certainly not doing the right things, and that’s a tiny sampling.

If they launch a nuke? Fine, we’re ALL dead, the elite politicians included. But it would take an awful lot of convincing, in my mind, to get our military to press the red button to launch a nuclear bomb on American soil.

My guns are an insurance policy against tyranny. I hope I never have to cash it in.

And by the looks of it, seems like it’s more probable that they’ll be my insurance policy against shooters like the two Islamic terrorists in California.

Though we may disagree on this one, keep up the good work!!

No, the government won’t drop nukes. But have you forgotten Ruby Ridge? Waco? The government is not going to be deterred by some angry fuckers with shotguns. Because they have M-16s, stealth bombers, and tanks. They have over two million personnel between active duty and reserves. Fighting a tyrannical government isn’t really a tenable position.
