This is Turtleboy vacation week and we’ve given our bloggers a week off to enjoy themselves. We’ll be reblogging some of our greatest hits this week though to help you remember the golden times. 

We just wanted to make a public service announcement because we keep seeing this GoFundMe on the Facebook machine from a Spencer woman named Sammie Holand:

Enough people have brought it to our attention, and we see that people are still falling for this scam, so we just wanted to warn you NOT to fall for it. Sure, it might seem heartwarming, but it’s clearly a scam. When we first saw this we were hesitant to write anything about it. We didn’t know the whole story. Plus it’s Christmas and Turtleboy is a huge softie.

But at the same time, where is the personal responsibility? What is wrong with our society when people are people not completely embarrassed to ask for a handout like this? This woman, Sammie Holland, and her baby daddy are 18 years old, capable of working, and willingly brought a child into this world. Based on their Facebook pages they have extended family support that many others in their situation do not.

This is symptomatic of a growing trend in this country – the GoFundMe-ification of America. Back in my day you’d have way too much pride to ask strangers to pay for your parking and meals while you were in the hospital. I mean, how much could it possibly cost? $50? If two parents can’t figure out a way to scrounge up $50 without a GoFundMe then why the hell are they parents?

Here’s the thing, according to her Facebook page her kid is now out of the hospital:

And her initial post said that the GoFundMe was to pay for her parking and food while she visited her son in the hospital. But now she has supposedly lost her job:

Sorry, but I’m having a hard time believing that any employer would fire a regular employee after a couple days, at Christmas, because their kid was in the hospital. It’s just not believable. So yea, she’s clearly lying about this, which means she’s using her kid’s unfortunate situation as a get rich quick scheme. Even though her son is out of the hospital, she still wants your money. And to make matters worse she’s exploiting her son’s hospital visit to raise more money with a raffle:

Just think, if you buy 6 “entry’s” into this “raffle,” for only $80-$100, then you can win a shitload of half empty shampoo bottles and used purses. Because someone has to pay for her to live while she doesn’t get a job.

She’s also posted it on basically every single buy/sell Facebook page in the Worcester County area, with ZERO SHAME:

Disgusting. The thing about these pages is that they’re really good places to buy new and used crap. And the fact that some GoFundMe queen is using it to get people to pay her rent because her and her able-bodied boyfriend are too lazy to work is what really offends me most about this. Don’t disrespect Facebook yardsale pages. Those are sacred grounds.

We don’t do kids on Turtleboy Sports, but if you check out her Facebook page you will see that she is sharing videos of her kid engaging in pretty strenuous physical activity, that any doctor would recommend a three year old NOT DO immediately after such a “serious” surgery. She also calls him a “pussy” or a “sissy” when he punches the bag and falls down.

Newsflash – if you own an iPhone, things can’t possibly be that bad. And as you can see, neither of them is disabled, and they obviously are getting by. She’s can afford tattoos and she’s obviously not the hungry person she’s claiming to be in order to solicit donations. But that’s because don’t need the money, but they’re using their three year old son’s brief sickness to try to fleece people into paying for their new washing machine at Whitco.

Oh yea, and we’re living in a country where you get free health insurance and the government will not allow an unwed mother go destitute. There’s a million and one government programs that she could be utilizing, and more than likely she’s already doing that. She’ll be fine. She doesn’t need your money, and we just wanted you to be aware of this before you become the next sucker to fall for these chiseler’s magic bucket of tricks.

You’re not the first people to go through hard times. You’re not the first people to have to go to the hospital for an unexpected visit. There are people out there with kids who are dying of cancer and are in a much, much worse position than you are. They figure out a way to make it work. This is a growing trend in this country that needs to end. Get off your ass, get a job, take care of your kids, and stop trying to guilt people into financing your personal irresponsibility.

P.S. I think it’s safe to say that this is largely Kevin Hayes and Tracy Crowe’s fault. It’s their school district that cut back on everything so they could finance a six figure witch hunt of some teachers. If this woman had just had a chance to participate in show choir or use a bathroom stall with a door, then maybe she would’ve graduated last year as a responsible citizen.
