It’s with great sadness that we report that former New England Patriots second round pick, and former Boston College and Burncoat High School legend Ron Brace has passed away.

Sad day. Ron Brace was a legend. He was the biggest player in Boston College history. In high school it was almost unfair having him line up against kids his own age. He threw the shotput 57 feet standing still. He is arguably the greatest football player to ever come out of Worcester, and was listed as fifth in the Turtleboy Sports list of greatest athletes in Worcester’s history. Don’t believe me? Here’s some of his highlights:

Ron Brace ate people for lunch. Poor quarterback from Shepherd Hill didn’t even see him coming.

Not surprisingly one of his fondest high school memory was beating Doherty on Thanksgiving his senior year.

Here is using 330 pound body to force a fumble against the Atlanta Falcons:

Ron Brace went to Burncoat during an era when great players still proudly went to public school. But things have changed a lot since then, and if Ron Brace were in high school today he would likely be heavily recruited by a prep school. Fortunately for fans of Central Mass football, Ron Brace treated them to NFL-calibar play at Foley Stadium.

Originally from Springfield, Ron was 29 years old. We don’t know how he died, just that he was found unresponsive on April 23. Rest in peace to a Worcester legend.

Prayers to the Brace family. I followed this man’s career. I follow all of the talented athletes from Worcester that made it not only at the college level but all the way to the pros. Especially from Burncoat. I’m biased yes. Sorry. My ole’ alma mater.

Hell – I followed Tanyon Sturtze who was drafted out of Quinsigamond Community College to Major League Baseball, I believe at first by the Tampa Bay (then called) Devil Rays, then eventually pitched for the New York Yankees in a relief capacity after being drafted as a starter. I met him at a Christmas party here in Worcester where his family lives months after that infamous brawl at Fenway Park with the Red Sox where he got a bloody lip and I lambasted him for fighting the very team he grew up to love. I was half serious and he laughed.

But for Ron Brace to play his professional career all throughout Massachusetts and to end up as a New England Patriot is truly remarkable. Hardly anybody in professional sports can say this.
