The Greenfield Recorder posted this picture of a Pioneer Regional High School student pretending to be a blind referee during a playoff game against Hoosac Valley High School:
Seems like harmless teenage fun right?
This is a big deal.
A HUGE deal!!
Just ask some of the brilliant commenters…
Translation – Michael Churchill is a ref who usually gets the call wrong and hears about it from the fans. Turtleboy has reffed plenty of basketball games before. It does in fact suck. By far the hardest sport to ref. The block/charge call is the biggest judgement call in any sport. A bad call at the end of the game literally hands the game to the other team. But at the end of the day, this is what you signed up for as a ref. More importantly, the kid obviously is making a joke. Remember jokes? We used to laugh at jokes back in the 90’s. Good times.
But according to Michael, if he was the ref he would’ve had the kid removed from the gym:
Because the first amendment doesn’t allow you to wear striped shirts and glasses and basketball games. Ref’s feelings come before free speech. That’s how our country works.
He wasn’t the only one taking offense for refs everywhere:
These are adults. Adults who don’t understand that a teenager is making a harmless joke at a basketball game.
Then there’s this winner:
Yea, because if there’s one thing I know about high school kids, it’s that they listen to the pre-game announcement about sportsmanship and respecting officials, and follow it to a T. I remember being at a game once in high school and someone in our stands yelled “air ball” when a guy on the other team missed a shot. We all gave him the most epic stare down ever and he bowed his head in shame. Lesson learned.
Making fun of someone with a disability? There are people dumb enough to believe that’s what this kid was trying to do? Make fun of the blind? For fuck’s sake. Can we get another plague? We’re so overdue.
Then there’s this chick:
Well, Josie Morris sounds like she’s a BLAST at parties. Hey Josie, since you’re such buckets of fun, I have a blind joke for you.
Q: How come Helen Keller was such a bad driver?
A: Because she was a woman.
And of course someone had to figure out a way to blame this one on Trump:
Yup. That seems like a reasonable assessment. If Hillary won there wouldn’t be anyone mocking referees. We must end this atmosphere of hate and discrimination towards refs.
Finally there was this bag of spunk:
Ableism? Ummm, he’s mocking a referee, not the blind. He’s saying that the refs are so bad at their jobs, and miss so may calls, that they could be mistaken for being blind. Get it? And how exactly is this the photographer and publisher’s fault? First of all, it wasn’t published. It was put on Facebook. Secondly, the ref saw an interesting and funny picture that was designed to elicit commentary. Which is exactly what you did. But yea, it’s the photographers fault for doing their job.
Then again, this is what we’re dealing with:
A social justice warrior? Never saw that one coming. If you’ve ever uttered the phrase, “capitalist white supremacist heteropatriarchy” then you probably haven’t shaved your pits in at least a fortnight. Just sayin.
