Dianne Williamson wrote a column yesterday about a Southbridge teacher who has had enough of the bullshit. Southbridge isn’t exactly an easy district to teach in. Veteran teacher and Worcester City Councilor Gary Rosen wanted to get back into the classroom in 2008, so he took a job at Southbridge High. He lasted 3 weeks. New record.
Southbridge has large amounts of poverty and students who do not speak English at home. These are some standard photographs from around town:
And whether or not people are willing to admit it, the fact of the matter is that this makes it harder for kids to succeed in school. In districts like this teacher’s need access to resources, and more importantly, support.
But instead all we get is bullshit from the state about they are “Level 4.” Of course we know why they do this – because they want the townsfolk to turn against the teacher’s union. It’s happening in Spencer-East Brookfield as well as countless other communities. The problem is that a school’s level designation largely depends on standardized test scores, which obviously are not very good out of Southbridge. This teacher put it so eloquently in Dianne’s column:
Oh good, someone from the community who wants to give back. I’m sure she was treated with respect and dignity by the state:
Oh look, some asshole six figure suit from the state, who has NEVER spent a day teaching in the classroom, has reached the arbitrary conclusion that this dedicated teacher is racist because she helped kids on the side of the classroom who happened to be predominantly white. Someone call the Department of Justice!!!!
It’s really unbelievable that this could happen, but not really. We’re living in a world where calling someone racist is done with zero regard for what it will do to that person’s reputation. It’s a pretty serious allegation, but it doesn’t stop morons from tossing it out there like cheap wine. She continued:
Preach sister!! I wish she gave us the name of this state monitor so we could publicly humiliate her. If anyone from Southbridge can help us out with that we would love to make this woman a huge public villain. Because she needs to be publicly humiliated. It is because of people like her that qualified professionals are leaving the teaching profession in droves. It’s her fault that our schools are going downhill. And the only thing that can fix it is public humiliation.
Why would anyone with a Master’s Degree ever subject themselves to such bullshit? Here is this teacher who is handed a bunch of students with a multitude of problems at home. And she’s supposed to magically get them to do well on a standardized test without an ELL director, social services for students, SPED plans, or any other supports that are required by law. Makes sense.
The best part of course is that the state at these MCAS workshops stresses that spelling and grammar shouldn’t be a focus on the MCAS open response section. Whether or not you agree with this philosophy, it’s what the state tells schools not to worry about. And so the teachers do the job they’ve been instructed to do and they get called racist for it. Who wouldn’t wanna be a teacher in 2015?
What I like most about this woman is how she’s not afraid to go on the record with her real name and call out every asshole in her town:
I LOVE it. This is happening all over the country because our leaders, including Obama, have put so much value into high stakes testing. They’ve lied to us and told us that poverty and zip code don’t matter. Every student has an equal ability to learn, it’s just up to the lazy teachers to get off their asses and stop making excuses.
Those lies need to end and they need to end now. Teachers are scared shitless to come forward out of fear of losing their job. But you have free speech rights too and Turtleboy will go to bat for you. We urge any teachers who want to share their stories like this to message or email Turtleboy and we can put your stories in a blog, with or without your name. Because this message is an important one and it really needs to get out to the masses.
