Out in the 413 this Facebook post from an Easthampton man went viral after his brother Kevin, a well-known special needs man and avid sports enthusiast, was mocked in a now deleted Facebook video created by a woman named Haley Marissa Gordon:
It’s been shared almost 5,000 times on the Facebook machine already, proving once again that Facebook justice is a million times more ruthless than a North Korean prison camp. The girl has deactivated her Facebook, but apparently she’s come back a few times because she’s addicted to Facebook. Meanwhile she is threatening to sue, but Matt Fournier ain’t having none of that.
What else is there to say? We haven’t seen the video but I have a hard time believing someone would just make this up. And anyone who thinks it’s funny to mock a man with a handicap is a piece of human garbage. It actually ENRAGES Turtleboy. People with special needs aren’t defined by their handicaps. Their life doesn’t have any less value than anyone else’s. Why someone would think it’s OK to not only mock someone with mental handicap, but then POST IT TO THE GODDAMN INTERNET, is beyond me. I mean, what is you thinking Haley Marissa Gordon?

Then think how you would feel if that person was mocked, ridiculed, and humiliated on the Internet merely for being themselves by a person who should know better. After you’ve pondered that write your apology on Facebook. You’ll still get a lot of shit from people, but at least then you won’t look that as much of an asshole. I know there is nothing that I can say or do at this time to adequately convey how bad I feel and how sorry I am for any pain or hurt that my actions caused Kevin and his family. My intent in taking a video and subsequently posting the video was not to make fun of or in anyway demean or embarrass Kevin. However, I realize that my intent does not matter, and that what is really important is the impact my poorly thought out and inconsiderate actions had on Kevin, his family, and friends. My hope is to talk with Kevin and his family members, and work with them on repairing any damage to them that has resulted from my actions. I also hope I can make this truly negative situation and experience into something positive by both examining my own level of sensitivity, which I will work on improving each and every day, and also serving as an example for others regarding thinking about your actions more carefully.

I have so many thoughts on this.. First being from the area I Kevin and enjoy his presence his presence at softball game’s. Ok, first I would like to say, I grew up with an older brother with special needs. Secondly, my 3 year old daughter is also special needs. I agree, it may sound overboard and harsh of “Turtle Boy” to bash this girl with no remorse. However, he is clearly standing up for his brother. When someone we care about deeply is dehumanized, what do we do? What do we feel? I can’t speak for everyone, but generally it provokes a primal sense of rage within us. We go for the low blows. We have no pity. Why should we? If she is as evil as she proves evident, then screw her! I know this feeling all too well. Older kids in my brother’s grade that I went to school with would make fun of him, and when they would, my blood would boil. I have since learned that if you take time to gather yourself, and plan your message wisely, you become the bigger person and you don’t stoop to their level. On that note, anyone that makes fun of a special needs person is ignorant, shallow, and just plain sad. She clearly has self esteem issues.
