Tewksbury High School is in the news because evidently the mascot – the Redmen – is offensive and it must be changed. Thus the school held a huge public meeting to debate whether or not it should be changed last night. No actual Native Americans took offense to this. Per usual it was just a bunch of short haired women with hyphenated last names, making a mountain out of hole hill. You didn’t even have to look at the caption to know which side of the line these Marcy Darcy’s fell on:

Those are the faces of the no fun allowed patrol. Those are the people who spend their free time looking for things to be offended by and want to force their hilarious thinking on others. Those are the people standing in front of you in line at Starbucks who order the grande mocha cappuccino with skim milk. Meanwhile, this is what everyone else looked like:

Working class families supporting their school, their traditions, and their harmless mascot. Love the guy with his 1995 varsity jersey tucked into the blue jeans. Guarantee that guy will regale you with some stories about the time they beat Billerica back in 94.

Here’s the main reason we don’t think schools should change their mascots if they are deemed offensive – no one is actually offended. All these women in pant suits and Tracy Novick hairdos don’t actually give a shit. They’re just looking for something to be outraged about. Not once has Tewksbury ever played another high school and the other team’s fans said, “Wow, that’s pretty offensive.” Not once. Because normal people don’t super analyze everything that exists. We’re too busy trying to enjoy life.

Not the Tewksbury PC police though. Oh no, they have to make a federal case out of this and make the whole town show up in the gymnasium. For what it’s worth the crowd overwhelmingly supports staying as the Redmen. Nevertheless, when a small, vocal, butthurt minority of suburban white women makes enough noise, people are forced to listen. Here’s what local hyphenated rabble rouser  Nicole Burgett-Yandow had to say:

“This mascot sends a subtle message of oppression and discrimination that can desensitize after years of viewing it…These images teach all children that the stereotyping of minority groups is acceptable.”

No it doesn’t. No child is going to watch a Tewksbury football game and go home and start listing off his favorite racial stereotypes. You’re literally making that up because you’re looking for something to be offended by. Everything is fine the way it is.

Here’s what a woman named Anne Seichter had to say, “The Redmen mascot “dehumanizes and objectifies Native Americans. There are many words that were once tolerated that are no longer considered appropriate to be used.”

No it doesn’t. It doesn’t “duhamize” Native Americans any more than an angry and violent Leprechaun dehumanizes all Irish people. It doesn’t dehumanize Native Americans any more than the Vancouver Canucks dehumanize all Canadian people.

Because “Redmen” is not a racial slur. When’s the last time you heard two kids say to each other, “Yo, wudup Redman?” When is the last time you heard a rap song with the lyrics, “Where my Redmen at?”

Never. Because Redmen isn’t a racial slur like the “n” word. It’s never used to put people down of different ethnicities. It’s just a cool mascot that no one cares about unless they’re looking for a reason to upset themselves.

Some apparently considered the red shirts that students wore, “bullying.” Because in 2016, everything is bullying:

Yup, racist kids wear red shirts to school. That’s what they do. Ann Marie here is a certified Social Justice Warrior so she can tell who is racist and who isn’t:

You’re Italian and Native American? LOL. Nah, you’re just a white woman with too much time on her hands. After all, if “fighting racist mascots” is your mission statement on Twitter, then you’re probably a real fun person to hang out with at parties.

The bottom line is they’ll probably eventually lose this battle. Natick High School used to be called the Redmen and they were forced to change in 2012. We’ve even heard rumors that some at Tantasqua Regional High School are offended by the “Warriors” nickname. But in the meantime, good for the townsfolk for putting up a fight. This is the same town where Market Basket headquarters are located. They got rid of Artie S, now hopefully they can get rid of the short haired, hyphenated, Marcy Darcy PC patrol.
