So the other night down by Kirsch Liquors in Worcester a homeless woman named Cherise Hill was stabbed to death by two men. She has reportedly been battling with schizophrenia for years now. The whole thing was caught on video and the suspects remain at large. The Telegram has part of the surveillance footage from the LQ store.
A few people have reached out to us about this woman and her past which kind of gives you some perspective on what mental illness can do to a person. Cherise Hill wasn’t your average homeless person. She was apparently a very talented singer who graduated from Doherty High School in 2002 and was part of their award winning madrigals singing group. Her classmates who have reached out to us tell us that she was an extremely talented singer who went to the Berklee School of Music to sing Jazz. In high school she showed no signs of mental illness. Just a regular high school girl who was involved in extracurricular activities and seemed to be on the the path to a successful career.
Just goes to show what can happen if mental illness goes untreated. In the wake of all the shootings we’ve seen in this country over the years it always sparks a big debate about gun control. Turtleboy does not have a strong opinion on that matter. But in our opinion the bigger debate should be focusing on the crisis of mental health in this country and what we can do to combat it. Because clearly it’s devastating lots of lives and it doesn’t seem like our government is interested in getting serious about it.

So who is your average homeless person? I guarantee you they all have a sob story. They just aren’t all stabbed to death outside Kirsch.
This woman was obviously completely out of touch with reality and her ant-social behavior was self-centered and hurtful to the community at large. She would have been perfect on the Worcester City Council.
You are absolutely right TB. More attention to mental illness is needed to keep both the mentally ill and the general population safe. Maybe things wouldn’t be so bad today if some people hadn’t insisted on “de-institutionalizing” those with mental illness some years ago.
Thanks to Mike Dukakis. Put them in a revolving door like the P.I.P. shelter so most of the time they wonder aimlessly on the streets. What a great idea…
(Slow clap)
