A Lowell teenager is hoping to help raise money for medical school in an unorthodox way – panhandling.

CBS BostonEighteen-year-old Emily Stutz started an online fundraising page to help her raise money for her education. Stutz says she has not yet decided where she will attend school in the fall. The senior wrote that while she has the academic credentials to study psychology on a pre-medical track, she does not have the finances to make it happen.

Stutz, a Lowell High School senior, says she has maintained a 4.0-4.5 GPA for the last four years, has volunteered for organizations and worked three part-time jobs. After applying at several schools, Stutz said she has been offered between $11,000-$18,000 in financial aid. But she still needs additional finances to attend the universities she hopes to attend.

“My parents have had immense financial struggles and simply cannot come up with $20,000-$30,000 a year, nor are they able to cosign a loan for me,” Stutz wrote on her fundraising page. “I have no other adults in my life who are able to cosign and I am at a loss. I see my dream of becoming a doctor slip further and further away as the days pass by so I’ve decided I am going to do whatever it will take to get myself to college.

That’s where her plan for panhandling comes in.

“If people will give to the ‘homeless’ panhandlers then maybe they will consider sparing a dollar or some change to an aspiring doctor who has all the academic, but no financial means to attend college,” wrote Stutz. “Anything helps at this point!”

Stutz posted on Saturday that she spent her first day asking for money outside Target in Lowell, calling it “extremely successful.”

In addition, her online fundraising page has surpassed $1,200.

Should’ve just done what Elizabeth Warren did – say you’re a Native American to get better financial aid packages.

There are so many things wrong with this. Where to start?

How bout the fact that she’s raising this money for medical school and she’s still in high school?

How bout the fact that it’s APRIL and she doesn’t know where she wants to go to college yet.

How bout the fact that she’s clearly lying when she says she has three part-time jobs and volunteers? Because there are only 24 hours in a day, and somehow this girl has time for school, 3 jobs, volunteer work, AND panhandling. Yea, that’s believable.

What’s really sad is all the morons lining up to say how great this is. Basically the rationale is as follows – if bums can bet for drug money, then why can’t a high school girl beg for college tuition? Might as well spend the money on a good cause.

Screen Shot 2016-04-17 at 8.46.24 AM

She’s doing it in a more respectful way? Why? Because she showered before she clocked in at the corner? There is nothing respectful about begging for money. It’s shameful. It’s for the destitute who have no other options. Think about it – this girl wants to be a doctor. Doctors are supposed to have integrity. They go into heavy debt because they will make large salaries when they graduate. This girl just isn’t willing to struggle in order to achieve that.

Screen Shot 2015-12-01 at 10.29.56 AM

Newsflash – you’re supposed to be better than drug addicts and crackheads. If you ever find yourself saying, “well crackheads are doing it” when trying to rationalize your actions, then you should probably reconsider your life choices.

Screen Shot 2016-04-17 at 8.49.03 AM

Dumbest analogy we’ve ever heard. Cheerleaders are raising money for a TEAM. She’s standing outside begging money for herself. I will agree that these teams who stand out begging for money are a disgrace too. Sell Hebert candy bars and stop whining about your problems.

This is what Mom had to say about it:

Screen Shot 2016-04-17 at 8.51.26 AM

Why is Mom allowing this? First of all, it’s kind of dangerous. You’re a middle class girl hanging out in junkie territory. You’re standing there as thousands of strangers you don’t know drive by you and are close enough to grab you. Sounds safe.

Secondly, “hard work equals results?” This is the exact opposite of hard work. Hey Mom, if you were responsible, you would’ve planned for this ahead of time. Ultimately she’s begging because she’s telling the public, “My parents weren’t fiscally responsible and didn’t plan ahead for my college education.”

Because you’re obviously NOT that poor. You could make this happen if you wanted to. After all, you did take the entire family to Disney last year:

Screen Shot 2016-04-17 at 8.56.27 AM

Ya know where Turtleboy never went when we he was growing up? Disney. Because we were too poor and my parents had priorities. We piled into the Volkswagon with a cooler full of ham sandwiches and juice boxes and we drove to Hershey, PA. That was the vacation where dreams don’t come true.

Then when college came up Turtleboy got into UMass, Assumption, and Providence. Two of those were ridiculously expensive and the other was state school. Turtleboy chose state school, even though it wasn’t his first choice. Because sometimes you don’t get everything you want, but you’ll still be OK.

We could keep going through Mom’s Facebook page and show you the wonderful gifts Santa brought them this year, or the professionally done pictures they routinely take, but you get the point.

079f2863-7fc7-4ed5-8736-67a1cbea0281

I would support this IF and only IF she is doing it to prove a point about what a joke panhandling is. If this is a middle finger to the crackheads then I’m all for it. Because panhandling in Lowell might actually be worse than Worcester. They’re everywhere. If she’s doing this to make a mockery of it, then I’m for it.

But clearly that’s not why she’s doing it. She’s doing it for the free money. And it’s obviously not well thought out, because she’s looking for $20,000 a year. Do you realize how much panhandling that is? She’ll make a few bucks, and maybe more than she’d make working at “4th” part time job. But what about her dignity? It this the point we’ve reached in society? Where this generation has no shame whatsoever standing on the corner like a junkie, begging for spare change?

Oh yea, and she’s also got this GoFundMeGuess how much she’s trying to raise?

Screen Shot 2016-04-17 at 8.36.07 AM

Thirty freaking grand. Because panhandling in person isn’t enough. You also have to do it digitally.

Hey here’s an idea – go to state school. I know, you probably think it’s below you because a bunch of stupid adults in your life told you to follow your dreams and go to any school you want to. But that’s really bad advice. You’re not a rich person, so you go to state school. And there’s nothing wrong with that. If you’re as good a student as you say you are then you’ll dominate in college and get into a good medical school after that. You live in Lowell. You could go to UMass-Lowell and live at home, and you wouldn’t need $20,000 a year. Problem solved.

We asked her why she couldn’t just get a job to help pay for college, like kids have been doing since the beginning of time. Here’s her reasoning:

Screen Shot 2016-04-17 at 8.40.06 AM

Raising awareness? I thought this was about raising money. Newsflash – we are all well aware that college is expensive. That’s why lots of people out there do things like join the national guard, take out student loans, and work REAL part time jobs. You’re acting like this is your last resort. It’s not.

All of this comes from my man Bernie Sanders. He’s convinced a new generation of kids that college should be free. Let me tell you why this is dumb. College should be expensive because you should think twice about going to college. It should be something you do if you’re 100% committed to it. If it’s free, then you’re gonna have more and more students going there to party for a couple years and drop out. Why wouldn’t they? It’s a free paid vacation. But if costs money at least you have the pressure on you not to be a complete fuck up.

The bottom line is, where does this end? Are we gonna start applauding a student who starts standing on the corner, whoring herself out? Why not? She’s doing it for medical school so it’s OK. Pride and integrity don’t matter anymore.

Can’t really get all that fired up over this. At least I’m not paying for her education.

Story got picked up by Good Morning America. Now every high schooler is going to want to do it.

    Second attempt to comment.

I’m glad you mentioned the Tag Day folks here. Their begging in the streets is just as bad as the panhandling. Actually, worse. I’ve never had a panhandler approach my car but I’ve been approached by little leaguers.

Eh. Don’t think this is really something to get to worked up over. If people want to give her some cash, let them. Hope she can get an education and has a good career.

Bottom line: higher education sucks. It costs a boat load. The first year is “affordable” due to scholarships. After that good luck, enjoy the debt. I went to Tufts for one year. After that I transferred to UMASS, I wasn’t rich and realized I was way out of my price range. Higher education costs rise much faster than the rate of inflation. Explain that. Load of crap. Someone is skimming all that dough. Luckily I finished college and have a great job without debt. Good luck to this girl! Sucks to not be a member of the lucky sperm club.

Although, I frown upon panhandling in general: I’d rather give her my change than the typical heroin addict begging for a hand out in downtown lowell.

Maybe if she went on a diet she could save some serious money . . . . if she was laying on a beach, people would be trying to roll her into the water

“Whatever, you’re a fucking asshole. Honestly, fuck you. Why bring her weight into this? And Turtle Boy Sports, you’re pathetic. Honestly, get a real job. Oh wait, nevermind, you can’t because of a Pariots game. No school will hire you, you faggot.”

I translated this in case anyone wanted to read a coherent, vocabulary and syntax correct statement. It’s amazing that people cannot grasp the use of a comma, nor a period, and still haven’t figured out the difference between your, and you’re.

PS… She could use a treadmill.

She has an excellent gpa but was not able to get any scholarships or grants? Might have helped if she had chosen some schools before senior year is over?

Most of the girls I know who cant afford college work at the LampLighter or Centerfolds… maybe they are hiring then you wont have to work 3 part time jobs… Ohh wait, my bad.

Wow… Amazing. Here’s an idea, apply for student loans, study your ass off so you can then attempt to get a scholarship. Works like a charm if you aren’t lazy. It’s a tad bit hard to believe that someone with a perfect GPA can’t grasp that concept. Work hard like the rest of us who have chased or are currently chasing higher education.

I will be 35 soon…. I’m 17 payments away from being free from the soul sucking of student loans, undergrad and law school combined. Every time I mail a payment, I cry a little bit inside but it feels good to know I have repayed my debt without the help of others. She needs to learn success feels so much better that way.

Advice to you young lady, ALWAYS do for yourself without help, so you owe no favors. You don’t ever want to hear, “If it wasn’t for me you wouldn’t have accomplished your dreams…” get it? Good luck!

GoFund me is the new way of achieving the American Dream! Although, since she is actually getting off the couch, more than her millenial counterparts, I’d probably throw her a couple bucks. And she isn’t a Tracy Novick junkie or fraud, so that counts for a little something
