Mary Ellen is the face of everything that is wrong with Massachusetts and its politics. She is the Secretary for the Weston Democratic Town Committee; the party that claims to champion the poor, while living in the wealthiest of the 351 towns and cities in this state. Her name is Mary freaking Ellen, the only name whiter than Becky. She posts incessantly on her Facebook page about politics. I don’t care if you’re left or right leaning – anyone who constantly posts about politics on Facebook is an asshole. And the politicians she admires so much (Clark, Gillibrand, Hillary, Warren, etc) are all exactly like her – rich white women who feel morally superior to other white women by calling everyone they disagree with a racist.
She has also intentionally insulated herself in a town that systematically prices out people of color and has no section 8 housing, yet constantly accuses other people of being racist. Take for instance this recent video she posted on YouTube the other day in which she interrupted and interfered with a police traffic stop in which a car was about to be towed. She saw that the people driving the car were not white, so naturally she had to do what racist white women like her always do – pull out their white savior card. Watch.

They weren’t searching the vehicle looking for drugs either, they were taking inventory in case the owners tried to come back on them and say that something valuable was missing from the car after it got towed.
We need to keep calling people like Mary Ellen Sikes out for what they are – racist. If you think that black and brown people NEED you to help them, even when they’ve blatantly broken the law, then you have a patriarchal relationship with black and brown people. You view them as juvenile and incompetent, and they NEED your help as a white woman in order to get a fair deal. You do this because you know deep down inside that you chose to live in Weston instead of Brockton, because Weston doesn’t have any black people. Shame on you Mary Ellen, shame on you.

Alright, folks. Brace yourself for a very long post. It distressed me as well to see the unintelligible, hate-filled comments on this article, so if you are going to read any comment opposing your view, Mary Ellen, please slog through this one and bear with me.
First of all, let’s address the plate-running issue and entertain the idea that the cop ran the plate while driving behind the vehicle, which they often do. Next time you are driving, try determining the race of the operator of the car ahead of you. Chances are, you can’t tell, especially if it’s dark, inclement weather, or there’s solar glare. In cases where the car was parked, the officer has no idea the race of the owner/operator until and if that person comes back to it. If the cop has determined that the car should be towed, stopped, or ticketed, this decision was made on the basis of laws rather than race – because, surprise, chances are that was the last thing on their list of considerations and they likely didn’t even know the operator’s race until/if they made contact. Police officers enforce the law and are far more focused on gathering information and handling logistics than racially profiling.
I honestly don’t know why you essentially believe that the outcome of a situation like this should be retroactively changed upon finding out the race of the person. “I ran your plate and you have an unregistered, uninsured vehicle… oh, you’re a person of color, never mind, my mistake!” Does that not strike you as unfair? I’m afraid equality has become conflated with exceptionalism in today’s world.
Second of all, as stated in the video, police run license plates all day. When they aren’t on a call, they engage in what we call proactive policing. That means, for example, that they don’t wait until a crash happens with an uninsured vehicle or stolen car; instead, they get the vehicle properly taken care of to prevent future issues – which is ultimately in the best interest of the owner as well as everyone else on the road. If you get in an accident with an uninsured vehicle, you’re seriously okay if the owner is a person of color, because thank god their plate was never run or they were never stopped/towed for it? Maybe you don’t care if your insurance ends up paying for it because you live in Weston, but I’d consider the potential repercussions of not running plates merely because the owner might be a POC before you have a conniption over a plate of a problematic vehicle being run.
What if a plate was run and it came back stolen or associated with an armed robbery or kidnapping? If the driver or occupant(s) was carrying thousands of dollars worth of illegal drugs in their car, you truly believe it was unfair and racist for them to get caught, just because they were of color? Whether it’s illegal drugs or an unregistered vehicle (especially if it’s one with a fabricated sticker), someone broke the law and should face the consequences. The fact that you are flipping out over this and chalking this alleged gross injustice up to white privilege and racial profiling is what baffles me. You claim you’re upset the plate got unjustly run because the sticker said 2021, but really you’re upset that someone got caught driving a vehicle they shouldn’t have been driving. That doesn’t make them a horrible person and from what I gather, there was no abuse or hostility from the police towards the operator when they were towing the car. But they broke the law, and Weston PD followed standard protocol – including an inventory – in response.
Now, my boyfriend and myself have frequented Weston for a year now. He has a rusted 1997 Pontiac that looks sketchy at best; I have a 2003 used Camry. We drive less than luxury cars and that could very easily (and probably does) set alarm bells off in an affluent town. Indeed, both of our plates are frequently run. Are we being profiled? Possibly. But are our cars legal in every sense? Yep. Guess what? We don’t get pulled over or towed. The plate gets run, everything checks out, and the cop goes on their way without incident. In fact, my boyfriend and I have been “harassed” in Weston multiple times. We’ve been thoroughly questioned and had lights shined in our vehicle when all he was doing was dropping me off at my car. He has been asked if he was drinking even though the officer(s) had literally no grounds for suspicion. I’ve been ID’d and asked to get out of the car and speak to an officer even though we were just sitting there talking. But we knew we weren’t doing anything illegal, so we put up with it – annoying or excessive as it seemed – and every time, were sent on our way once our stories had been verified.
I ask you, however: What if we were in fact engaging in illegal activities? What if there was a stolen firearm in the car? What if one of us was a missing person or a suspect in a serious crime? What if we weren’t just innocently sitting and chatting? I bet everyone would be grateful that we were stopped/checked on. But what if I told you my boyfriend is African-American? Would it suddenly become racism for the police to make sure all is well? You’re basically saying that if someone breaks the law and gets caught and they are a person of color, it’s racist… but if they’re white, it’s totally acceptable. How do you genuinely not see the flaws in that reasoning?
I don’t bitch about cops doing their job, because they have no reason to blindly trust me. Just like no police officer has a reason to blindly trust that a car will be registered, insured, and legal – regardless of what the sticker says. In other words, running plates has literally nothing to do with race and everything to do with fulfilling their duties, enforcing the law, and ensuring a safer community. The logic is simple: don’t do anything illegal, and you won’t get towed or pulled over by the police. It doesn’t matter your color. They probably can’t tell your race when they run your plate, and if you do everything correctly, they’ll never even find out.
Mary Ellen, I do not deny that racism exists in society. We don’t live in a world of truly equal opportunities, equal pay, equal access to resources, etc. and we have a long way to go. Do scumbags in this profession exist, just as there are in others? Of course; we’re human and there are rude people everywhere. But are the 900,000 sworn officers in America all racist horrible white men? Absolutely not, and it is just plain asinine to suggest that. I’m curious, are you also against people of color needing to go through security at the airport? Are you against criminal background checks on prospective employees if they are a minority? If a white person cheats on a drug test, should they get penalized while a black person shouldn’t? You are a proponent of exceptionalism and overcompensation, and calling for different treatment of one group on the basis of race is laughably far from the “equality” you promote. As such, this incident was irrefutably NOT racially motivated. I know many white people who have experienced the same (or even worse, in some cases) treatment as my friends of color. It isn’t about color. It’s about law enforcement and the oath that these brave men and women in blue took when they started the job.

Can you please explain to me how you got into all of Weston PD’s cruisers’ computers and looked up the history of all the plates that have been run, then lined them up to owners of color, which doesn’t even guarantee that was the race of the operator at the time it was run? No, like for real, I would really appreciate an explanation for the basis of that knowledge. I mean, I think I’m being fairly rational. It isn’t racist to be able to critically think about these things. But according to feelings-over-facts people, it is. So I guess I’m racist.
It’s pretty sad, actually, that you waste your time trying to be a white virtue signaler – and seriously, who’s going to be like “yeah, I did something illegal/was driving an illegal vehicle and got confronted for it but it was totes fair and just”? You people talk about needing to walk a mile in the shoes of a person of color, but have you walked a mile in the shoes of a police officer, particularly in today’s day and age, where they are persistently marginalized, threatened, and killed for wearing a uniform? You cry out against the profiling, stereotyping, and villainization of an entire group, yet here you are doing the very same thing to a single profession.

Could the police have decided to run the plates on that specific car because the occupants were black? Of course, but we can´t know that for sure. It´s Weston. Iḿ sure the officer ran plates of white people that day as well. The only way to know for sure is to investigate all the cars plates the officer ran that day, that week, that month, or that year. Mary Ellen should try doing THAT legwork rather than just trying to PUBLICLY save the day.

One of them mentioned a major fact of traffic enforcement: automatic license plate readers. I GUARANTEE they work as intended, and they don’t discriminate. If there’s ANY issue in system regarding the plate in question, you WILL get pulled over. Been there, got that. (I had an insurance screw-up, and it was “almost” resolved, but still got nailed; didn’t get towed, but did have to go to court.) and the computerized readers are FAST. In light/medium traffic, the trooper was on the road with lights less than a 1/4 mile after I passed.
