The wussification of American continued today in the Woo, when the good folks who run the Worcester Running Festival decided to cancel the half-marathon and 5k a little over an hour before the race was set to begin:

Oh sweet Jesus. Give me a break. First of all, no weather report predicted there would be lightning in Worcester today. Not one. And not surprisingly, there was no lightning in Worcester today. This is why Worcester can’t have nice things. Because we finally have an event that actually gets people to come to Worcester of their own accord, and then we go and do shit like this.

Secondly, even if it was predicted that we’d get thunderstorms today, who cares? Why are we so afraid of lightning? Do you understand what the odds are of being hit by lightning while running a road race? You have much better odds of getting in a car accident any day of the week. Perhaps we should cancel driving too.

It looks like they’ve decided to postpone this thing to a date and time to be announced. My question is, what if you can’t make it? What if you drove all the way up here, got a hotel room, trained your ass off for months, and then found out that you don’t get to run because you might get hit by lightning? You think everyone’s schedule is just wide open?

The half marathon costs between $50-$65 to register depending on when you did so. So the question is, will they be giving refunds? Surprisingly most people on Facebook seem cool with this, which blows my mind. I guess not everyone was thrilled about the prospect of running 13.1 miles in the rain:

Alright, that’s pretty funny. But one person did ask about getting a refund:

Notice that the response was “edited.” The original one said, “no refunds.” But obviously that doesn’t sound quite as good as “a fair and reasonable resolution to this for everyone.”

Some people are saying stuff like this too:

Oh sweet Jesus. Now we’re worried about police getting hit by lightning? Do police not work during thunderstorms? Does crime cease to exist when there’s a chance for lightning? Oh yea, and the police officers that would’ve been doing those details would be compensated QUITE fairly for their services. I wouldn’t worry too much about them. They signed up to be cops – lightning is the last thing they have to worry about.

Look, it’s really simple, the organizers screwed up. Shit happens. But obviously then it’s incumbent upon them to make it right. And they can do that by offering refunds for people who won’t be able to drive up from New York, or Pennsylvania, or wherever else people decided to make the pilgrimage to Worcester from.

I can’t be the only person wondering if Theresa Pickens was going to be competing in this race…

13 is an unlucky number. They should have seen it coming.

This thing was supposed to go through my newton sq. neighborhood. It would have been carnage! Carnage, I say!

Rain is confusing enough for the q-tips, the Madam Bluebush, the geezers. Throw in people running, perhaps some pretty flashing lights, and they would overload their ancient circuits. They’s panic, hit the throttle instead of the brakes on the 1988 Buick, and plow, mouth agape, into everyone.

Thank, you, Masters of the small fiefdom of the Woo half marathon. You’ve spared us all.

Isn’t there a CHANCE of lightening every day? Worcester wasn’t even under a severe thunderstorm watch.

Ah, so people won’t be able to put a 13.1 sticker on their cars? Damn.
