We found someone else who feels Turtleboy’s pain. There is a Facebook page called “We love Facebook and GMO’s” which has about 75,000 followers. It’s run by a middle school teacher from Annapolis, MD named Stephan Neidenbach, and it’s basically a page that is used to criticize and ridicule the nutjobs known as “anti-vaxers,” who don’t vaccinate their kids. Mostly he shares articles and memes like these:

In a lot of ways Stephan is a lot like Turtleboy. He has a big following because he tells the truth and calls out morons in the process. And in doing so he has created many enemies. Check out this blog because it is enlightening:

Facebook bows to anti-science activists, shuts down ‘We Love GMOs and Vaccines’

The time spent with the page was not without some stress. My criticism of the anti-biotechnology movement has caused some absolutely terrible people to try and silence me. I almost threw in the towel when people began tweeting and emailing my school system about me. These people view the criticism often used on my Facebook page as “harassment” of their leaders and followers–and they have attacked the site and me viciously. For example, Ena Valikov, a veterinarian, is known for trolling science focused sites, personally attacking scientists and science communicators who do not agree with her extremist views on GMOs and other issues.

Screenshot-2016-08-03-at-10.27.27-PM Screen Shot 2016-08-17 at 10.25.53 PM

Sound familiar? Guy tells the truth and gets accused of “harassment” for doing so. Then they accuse him of being a bad teacher and bother him at his job.

But it would not be until several weeks ago when I felt that my work and that of a small team of volunteers was really being threatened. I was alerted to a post that appeared in a dark pit of Facebook, Vaccine Resistance Movement, which is the go-to source for vaccine deniers convinced of an international corporate and government conspiracy to poison children. Dr. Joseph Mercola, who runs one of the most popular websites peddling ‘natural medicine–he is described by the Encyclopedia of American Loons as “a frighteningly popular alternative medicine guru and (more or less) cult leader- posted a request to this group of nearly 25,000 activists to report our Facebook page for “investigation.”

Mercola seemed to take issue with an image I posted of Dr. Jeff Bradstreet, a Christian preacher turned alternative medicine guru best known for his  promotion of homeopathy and other forms of medical quackery. He promoted misinformation on how to deal with autism, leading to an untold number of children being harmed. Bradstreet’s body was found dead under mysterious circumstances in 2015, which led to an exchange on VRM.

Sounding more familiar? Dooshnozzle fake pastor doesn’t like something that exposes chiselers like him who peddle false medicine. Literally tells his followers to to report posts that are critical of him on Facebook and tells them to specifically report it for “inciting violence,” even though he knows it didn’t incite violence since it dealt with a suicide. He, like the trolls who try to censor Turtleboy Sports, understands that no one actually reviews these posts and that by reporting something for “inciting violence” is more likely to be taken seriously by the computers that review Facebook posts. Just ask the mob that will be named who is taking credit for mass reporting our page because their leader doesn’t like it:

14074624_1230521773649482_1724850162_o 14045208_1230521780316148_1223401679_o

Anti-vaccine hotheads began a coordinated effort to destroy what we have built. Facebook has adopted the precautionary principle, and the anti-science mob knows from experience how to manipulate the system.

Dr. David Gorski, a surgical oncologist and one of the country’s most respected science communicators as founder of the Science-Based Medicine blog, has previously written on how rabid anti-science activists have learned how to manipulate Facebook’s algorithms to censor science advocates: “when members of the Stop the Australian Vaccination Network were targeted by what was then called the Australian Vaccination Network for complaints against them on Facebook. Facebook, through its automated reporting algorithms, would then issue 12-hour, 24-hour, or even longer bans against pro-vaccine advocates.”

This is exactly what happened to us. They take down two posts and alert you that you’ve violated FB’s terms and conditions. Then they suspend you for 24 hours, 3 days, 7 days, and finally 30 days.

The page was unpublished four times over a three week period before finally being deleted. A Facebook representative on the phone explained that when enough people report a page or a post in a short period of time, Facebook automatically removes it. This technique isn’t just being used by the anti-science movement, but also by oppressive regimes around the world to stifle dissent. The Verge reported on how these tactics are employed by the Vietnamese government to silence journalists and activists.

It is utter insanity that Facebook allows these gangs of thugs to act as judge, jury and “executioner”. I understand that Facebook wants to keep a reputation for a “safe” environment, but allowing  keyboard renegades free reign stifles freedom of expression, which is what has made the Internet so great.

Somehow this guy spoke with a Facebook representative. Guess why? Because as it turns out this FB rep was a big follower of his blog. So in other words, he got extremely lucky. But he’s absolutely right about how easy any repressive group or government can act as a “gang of thugs” and silence people who are saying things they don’t agree with.

It’s also funny that the Facebook rep admitted to him that Facebook “automatically” removes mass reported posts. This is in direct contrast to what Facebook executive Monika Bickert said in March:

Facebook Executive Lies: Says Employees Review 1 Million Reports Per Day On Same Day Turtleboy Is Suspended Another 30 Days For Nothing

“You can think of our reporting system as the world’s largest neighborhood watch program. We rely heavily on people in the community to tell us when they see something that probably shouldn’t be on Facebook. You can report any piece of content. You will answer a couple short questions about what you’re seeing and why you don’t think it should be on Facebook. Then after you’ve reported it, it will be sent to a member of our operations team who will review it.”

She lied to her investors. No one reviews Facebook reports. It’s just a numbers game, like we knew the whole time.

But this isn’t just about me. Our audience of more than 70,000 was an essential part of an online network of pages sharing information with each other. Facebook posts rely on engagement. Without larger pages sharing articles and memes, most people will never see most of what is posted. Shutting down my page is like having a bulb go out on a traditional string of Christmas lights, where all the pages that follow mine go in the dark as well.

And that is what this is really about. The anti-vaccers and anti-GMOers and other groups who not only defy science but attack those who promote independent thinking are not satisfied with just trying to block on the pages of science communicators, they are intent on preventing everyone else–you–from seeing independent information as well. In history class I teach of great wars fought against tyrants who do just that.

That right there is the biggest problem – really important speech is being silenced. Big pages like this guy’s and Turtleboy’s are important because our audience enables us to share really important information with the masses. Imagine if Turtleboy Sports wasn’t around. Mosaic Cultural Complex would still be stealing money from the taxpayers. Spencer-East Brookfield Schools would still be run by a tyrant. And the real story about Jorge Zambrano and Ashley Losapio would have gone unreported. Without our Facebook page we would not have been able to report the stories we did.

Anyway, we’re looking into our legal options. We pay money to Facebook for ads promoting our blog and they are not providing that service. They’re stealing money from us. They’re also costing us thousands of dollars and violating our agreed upon contract by suspending our accounts without us violating the contract. In the meantime we have to end our dependence on them. That’s why it is REALLY, REALLY IMPORTANT to create a Twitter account. They never suspend us for whatever reason, and our following on there is a lot smaller. We are also going to create an app so that you can just go directly to the site on your phone. Stay tuned because if you think we’re going to let these Fascists win then you obviously don’t know much about Turtleboy.

P.S. The only way to really attack Facebook is to keep sharing stories like this. If you know of anything similar to this where a page has been shut down due to trolls, send it to us.

We urge you to support the Turtleboy Sponsors by doing business with them. Without them none of this is possible. Click on any of them to check out their sites or Facebook pages.

Beth, is your life that good so you can lay back an target random people in society and to stalk and harrass them?

I am beginning to understand who makes up turtleriders collectively.
You all have enjoyed making fun of others in life and you absolutely hate when someone reply that you yourself are ugly

Turtleboy, you unjustly attack people and you incite a mob of hateful led misfits online to assist you. You call for mass reporting of people’s personal Facebook pages. You encourage and admit that you maintain dozens of fake facebook sites.

Your talking out of both sides of your mouth. You allowed the pictures of the minor children in my family to be displayed on your sight attached to threats to hurt them.

You allowed Bret Killoran to threaten to brutally rape my 15 yr old niece as he descriptive ly stated he would make her handucapped. My 15 yr old loved beautiful niece. You allowed them to post pictures of her on your sight wearing her braces and talking about having sex with her.

My brother just wants to go rip you and Brett out of your houses and give you both beatings of a lifetime. These are his babies, what don’t you fucking get??? I asked the detectives at Worcester what they would do if it was their daughter and they asked us over and over to please let them deal with you and Brett. There were also complaints at Fitchburg pd at the same time so wpd told me to talk to Fitchburg pd detectives. I talk to these detectives three times and My brothers schedule was very busy and I didn’t want to see my brother going through stress everyday. He just wants to file criminal charges in Worcester.

Your site has overstepped many lines then you hide behind the few pro police stories. You are a little slick pick but it is going to catch up to you.

You push people right to their human limits and then you continue to push. You told people to contact people’s employers, their chirches, social events and boards. You went after their family members. You think you have the right to unjustly fuck with people.

You take pictures of random people and you then bash them. They could be waking up from a second shift job but you don’t care about facts as you bash them. Leave people the fuck alone already.

Why’d you kill me Kevin? Huh… Why did I have to die? You talk about bashing people… But, you LITERALLY bashed my head in… with a fucking golf club! I could have been something… made something with my life… But, you took that. You took that all away. And yet, you still act like a total and utter tool bag. I’ll never get to see my family again… Never get to hug my mother… Because of YOU! Do you remember what it sounded like when the club hit me? Did it make you feel tough? Make you feel strong? I’m dead. Kevin Lynch killed me.

Matty Mo, how is it hanging bro? I am starting up a new blog. The two faced turtle. I miss you guys. Oh where oh where did my turtleboy go……….

Matty, when I was attempting to Id you I posted a pic from your facebook site. On the left side was your boy. You contacted me and what did I do? I took him out of the picture right away.

Now you guys sat by and allowed Brett to post individual pictures of the minor children in my family and stating he was going to bring them physical harm.

I pointed it out to Turtleboy and what did he do? He mocked me and left the pictures on the turtleboy sight.

Turtleboy sunk when you guys began to talk out both sides of your mouth. You didn’t follow the same standard that you held to people. You stalked, bashed and attacked people for doing exactly what Turtleboy was doing.

You even put out a fake story about the fake want a be cop with the oriental wife. You lied and blasted it all over the internet. You did this unjustly because I called you people on the fact that you were posting individual pictures of the minor children in my family and threatening to do bodily harm to them.

In other words, you knowingly were falsely accusing me or something that you attack turtleboy actually did do.

Tammy Gow, aka Jullianne kearney. I now own Turtleboy. I want respect . I have demands and then you can have turtleboy back. It isn’t over in 5 days like you think. I found the way
To suspend the accounts with one click. I want a ride in the white mercedes, I want 5 sets of redox tickets, 5 patriot sets and $2000.
I will agree not to sue ect…

Here is an even better idea that will fix the problem and maybe make some money for facebook. For a fee – and you have already paid good money so it would be minimal- you get a protected page which can only be shut down by an actual person. If there are unsubstantiated claims made then the accounts they came from will be closed. For $50 a month if 100 people sign up that would allow facebook to pay 5000 a month for a stay at home job. But maybe the person could handle 200 pages depending on the number of complaints. There is a solution to this and it does not have to cost anything.

Please stop bitching about something that you actively encouraged your users to do! Seriously – you advocated exactly this behavior towards other people, but when someone flips the script and does it to you, it’s endless posts bitching and moaning about it!!

Oh you are losing business and money because of it? Well, then maybe you shouldn’t have done it to others… and it sounds like you didn’t take it into account with your business model – “Oh gee – what happens when most of my business is from Facebook and Facebook shuts me down”

There has been zero serious reporting here on TBS in a long time…

You advocate that people need to be responsible for their actions on the Internet – well you guys done messed up.

I notice TBS doesn’t brag about all the site traffic anymore, they have local advertisers dropping and owing them money, and the site is basically full of softcore clickbait. This is how a blog dies…

    • JoeMomma
      August 18, 2016 at 10:36 am

Thanks for the clicks…come back again soon

      • Sad Lawyer Gentleman
        August 18, 2016 at 12:48 pm

I think you miss the point – I do like coming here… in fact, I used to ‘give my clicks’ several times a day – but now it’s down to every few days, and I bet I’m not the only one. The site is boring lately – just personal attacks and Facebook moaning. I’m more than happy to hand over my clicks when TBS was doing what was promised – you know, some ‘real reporting’.

Remember when TBS jumped all over those kids for going to ‘journalism’ school? TBS was the ‘new face of journalism’ – but they haven’t done a single bit of substantial follow-up on any of their decent news stories… Hey, you got that guy elected out in SEBRSD – does TBS send someone out to the school committee meetings? Nope. Follow up at all on any of the allegations made against the staff out there? Nope. TBS lobbied hard for the new superintendent in WPS, so how’s things at North? TBS reach out to anyone for a comment? Nope.

The Worcester Sun seems to do decent reporting, but they have a terrible commerce model – ever thought of reaching out to them? Of course, I’m assuming with the new softcore approach to this site they won’t have anything to do with this place. And BTW – Adblockers prevent the revenue stream those ads generate – as those Turtleriders that suggest them don’t seem to understand.

        It’s a shame… that’s why I’m sad. ;-(

Here’s a possible angle. If the 30000 followers can report all BLM pages and the algorithms shut them down then Facebook’s algorithms will be deemed racist and the government will have to shut them down.

Just a reminder to everyone that the man who started the “vaccines cause autism” myth was paid by big pharmaceutical companies to try and discredit a specific vaccine. This vaccine protected against multiple diseases instead of just one, which meant you didn’t need as many vaccination shots, which meant less money for the companies. The man was stripped of his medical license for starting the ridiculous autism rumor.

The app idea is genius. Absolutely genius. It’s costly unless you know someone who is a capable of making one. I don’t have twitter but I guess I will sign up now, might as well since FB is turning into cry baby central. This is only the beginning. If TB becomes capable of maintaining the flow of income without FB, possibilities will be endless. Think back to when you had 0 followers, I bet at that point you didn’t think you would have 36k today. Keep it going!

    • Sad Lawyer Gentleman
      August 18, 2016 at 12:55 pm

Lol – you obviously have no idea what it takes to create and develop an app, get it listed in the various App stores and then downloaded in any significant amounts to be used. Outside of the 10 or so psychos that post here, who the hell is gonna download a dedicated TBS app? Nobody.

The good news is that there is no way TBS has enough capital to both sue Facebook and develop an app, so we won’t be hearing any more about this silly idea…

      • FiestyLawyerLady
        August 18, 2016 at 1:47 pm

I do have an idea actually. It is very costly. I wanted one for something I’m venturing into soon, and was quoted $20k. So after I vomited at the thought, then came to my senses, I realized it’s impossible.

If I knew someone who could create the app, that would be a different story. How do you know what TB does or does not have? So many assumptions.

There are average people who don’t try everything to succeed. Then there are people who think outside of the box who are willing to take risks, those types succeed. Which one are you?

        • Sad Lawyer Gentleman
          August 18, 2016 at 2:57 pm

Then there are smart people that know a sucker’s bet when they see one. An app to fill a need no one has is a sure fire money loser, and completely unnecessary. TBS has completely stopped doing any kind of ‘investigative’ reporting – when was they last time they even mentioned a FOIA request?!?

Listen – I liked TBS and the promise they brought of shedding light into the various local corruptions. Sure, TBS didn’t always get it right (Prouty walkout anyone?) but they at least had people asking uncomfortable questions. But now it seems to be dedicated to ‘public shaming’ and complaining about Facebook policies.

I love this ‘you’re with us or against us’ mentality of posters around here – I don’t even have a Facebook account, but it’s obviously 100x worse over there.. From going after elected officials TBS turned mid Spring to just about only going after private citizens.

How about TBS just gets back to writing serious newsworthy stories? Lurking Facebook and Twitter for ‘outrage of the week’ posts gets old fast – and I’ll bet the page impression numbers show that too… Only the petty worry about the newest SJW. Ah well, I’m screaming at a wall anyways. Maybe I’ll just pony up a few bucks to Worcester Sun and be done with it.
