Just wanted to take a minute to address the latest Facebook trend of changing your profile picture to the French flag. We changed our’s on Facebook to this:

12238035_1650170181932925_4210637089617540919_o

That’s a picture someone sent us who was recently in Paris, of the French version of the Turtleboy. Although we are hearing it might be a Turtle girl. Could be transgender, too early to tell. It’s in this place called “The Louvre.” Ever heard of it?

Another picture we could’ve put up which is equally as appropriate and much more hilarious is this one:

12239626_10154386396894816_8894247990319042335_n

Paris Cinema and Turtleboy – two of Carlo Baldino’s favorite things. Even more appropriate because it unites Worcester and Paris in one glorious picture.

Anyway, we got some shit about it. Here’s a comment that was left on our page after we changed the picture:

Dissapointed on the day before there were attacks in Lebanon, nobody cared. Turtleboy of all sites should have called people out on their bs french flag profile pics, not created a follower pic.

OK, this whole “yea, but there were tragedies in other places too” shit needs to stop. If you’ve been riding the turtle for a while now then you know that Turtleboy doesn’t just do things because they’re trendy. Usually we do the exact opposite. I don’t know why we did this, we just did. It looks kind of cool, and we knew when we did it we weren’t changing the world or making it easier for the families of any of the victims. But we just figured that the rest of the country and the world had our back after the Boston Marathon attacks and September 11, that this would be a nice little gesture. Plus it looks cool.

Now this isn’t to say we won’t criticize a Facebook trend. For instance, the Joseph Kony thing was so stupid because people were surprised by it. Child soldiers have been a thing for a long time before Kony 2012 became a thing. Go watch Blood Diamond and get back to me.

284e986c097a2d4b676d1736c24dff04ebbc3e499b559ff5da0ee7f3b5d6cef4

Then there was the pink equality sign for gay marriage. That was dumb because people could’ve been in favor of gay marriage a LONG time ago. But they only came out of the woodworks now because Macklemore won a Grammy Award. Where were these people when the Stonewall Riot or Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell happened? Nowhere. Because it wasn’t trendy then.

As for the bombing attacks in Lebanon, what would you like us to do? When people think of Beirut, the first word that usually comes to mind is bombing. Because it’s in the Middle East and the Middle East is the most fucked up, backwards place that has ever existed.

But Paris and the Western World are supposed to be safer than places like Beirut. That’s what makes this story so shocking. Middle Eastern violence found it’s way into the West, and that is a much bigger deal than violence in the Middle East. Here’s why.

It’s like when you open the newspaper and you see that someone got shot in Vernon Hill or Roxbury or Springfield. No one bats an eyebrow. But when someone gets shot in Tatnuck or Wellesely or Longmeadow, it’s a much bigger deal. As it should be. Because there are always gonna be depraved acts of violence in this world, but we need to make sure that these are isolated areas so that good and decent people can move about freely. And yes, there are plenty of good and decent people in those dangerous places, which is why the goal for most of them is to get the hell out of there and move to a more civilized and less dangerous place.

So yea, when a bomb goes off in Beirut, no one is surprised, because it’s Beirut. But when a well planned out, well financed, coordinated act of terror takes place in several locations of one of the most iconic, civilized, and cultural cities in the world, it’s a MUCH bigger deal. As it should be. Because if we lose the civilized parts of society to the savages then there will be no place for civilized people to live.

Got it?

Then there are dumb posts like these:

Screen Shot 2015-11-15 at 3.38.32 PM Screen Shot 2015-11-15 at 3.37.33 PM

You know what I’m gonna stop supporting? Breast cancer awareness. Because it’s not fair to all the other things that have killed people. It’s not right to commemorate innocent people who were massacred by Muslim terrorists because Freddie Gray and Michael Brown died after resisting arrest and trying to take a gun from a cop. That makes TONS of sense. I apologize for my Eurocentrism and white supremacy.

FYI Naomi Toledo is part of the “peaceful” black lives matter Boston chapter, and Ashley Wonder got that free, taxpayer funded trip to Oakland with RBG as part of his poetry slam.

Turtleboy saw a lot of people sharing this article entitled “Why I’m not turning my Facebook phot blue, white and red” by a woman named Jamie Khoo. First of all, get over yourself hun. Anyone who feels the need to brag to the world that they’re NOT doing something is an attention seeking, narcissistic dooshnozzle. If you don’t wanna change your picture, that’s fine. It doesn’t make you any better than Turtleboy. And going out of your way to announce to the world that you have some sort of moral superiority, or that you’re not a sheep like everyone else because you’re smarter and you didn’t put a French flag on it, makes you a dooshnozzle.

13678_1561930077423603_3356491199253347562_n

Here’s an excerpt:

I won’t be adding the French flag filter to my Facebook profile. I’m also not writing condolence and prayer messages on my Facebook feed, tagged with #PrayforParis. It is not because I don’t care, or that I don’t feel the profound shock and sadness for what has happened.

In fact, it’s because I find it so absolutely awful that I’ve chosen not to engage in this way. I feel that just changing my photo, writing a few words and a hashtag on social media minimizes (even cheapens) the tremendous, horrific reality of what is going on all around the world, not just in Paris. From suffering arises another trendy social media gimmick, another way for us to show the world how “clued in” and “with it” we are.

Cool. Thanks for sharing. No one gives a shit what you DIDN’T do. Only in America do we have writers who brag about what they DIDN’T do.

unnamed-2

Why do we change our photos, really? To show solidarity? But what does that even mean and how does a temporary Facebook photo do it?

Oh snap!!! Here I am thinking I changed the world and fixed terrorism. Turns out I didn’t do shit!! Thanks for putting me in my place Jamie Khoo!!!

The people I know in Paris—or any other place that is hit by tragedy—are in my thoughts and in my messages; I just don’t feel the need to broadcast this to the world. I’ve found ways to reach out to them directly to find out how they are, and offer support in whatever way they need now. This is my way of responding to a conflict that I feel is more meaningful than merely changing my photo.

Translation – the way I’m responding to this senseless tragedy is better and more productive than the way you are. Therefore I’m a better person than you and wanted to make you aware of this.

The bottom line is, if you didn’t change your profile picture then more power to ya. I really don’t give a shit if you did, but I especially don’t give a shit what your reasoning is for not doing it. Have fun patting yourself on the back though. We’re real proud of you.

You’re a dumbass/fag/”dooshnozzle.” Fuck France. Those french frog faggots have nothing but contempt for Americans, and they have nothing coming from me, especially considering how they treated a close person friend of mine when he went to vacation in france. I hope they get bombed again !!

These people getting up on their soapboxes proclaiming that we underlings are racist because we changed our profile pics in support of Paris are all pulling the old “fallacy of relative privation” which is fancy talk for when people say things like “who cares about France? We have starving kids in Africa!” Conspiracy theorists also use the same argument and in my opinion conspiracy theorists are disordered individuals and shouldn’t be taken seriously for one second. Likewise the “superior grievers” who obviously break down every time a terrorist bomb goes off in the world. They have such a heavy burden to carry so we really should pity them. It’s a cute sentiment to want to grieve the world equally but it’s so Utopian and oh so out of touch with reality.

Why are you wasting time writing an article this idiotic? The people in Paris deserve to be remembered, not some idiot fueled fight over facebook’s image layover. Now I see why I’ve never heard of TurtleBoy Sports. Because you write articles intended to deflect real issues all the while spewing ads in my face. Yea I wont be coming back… thanks for an awful read.

I think there’s as many postings to articles saying we’re either paying attention to the wrong problems or too much to France as there are people that changed their profile photo.

    So, call it a wash.

A friend of my bro was a thousand feet from an explosion. Being marines we are use to combat but that means we have firepower! Not the case so one hunkers down with a kitchen knife and waits for the smoke to clear. Anyone who bitches about an avatar or some other incident should tell it to the concert goers, restaurant patrons and so on. But u better yell real loud as they can,t hear you, dumbass!

I love and embrace my white Eurocentric culture and viewpoint. It gave the world order from chaos, architecture, science, language, literature and art. To say nothing of philosophy, roman roads, aqueducts, trade and commerce and basically everything that you need to live a complete and full life. I’m not sorry that I don’t care about criminals that get killed while resisting arrest or try and spread mayhem while intimidating their hard working neighbors. If changing your profile to a French flag makes you feel better do it. This is America do what you want, if you don’t like it, try living with peaceful and tolerant Muslims like Isis or north Korea or Zimbabwe or Iran.

    • Noah G
      November 16, 2015 at 3:58 pm

That’s simply not true. Though many prominent thinkers, artists, and scientists came from the Western world, to say that white Europeans were responsible for “basically everything that you need to live a complete and full life” would be discrediting the rich culture, history, and knowledge from other regions of the world. In fact, much of the technology, math, and science Europe gained during the middle ages was borrowed from the Islamic world. And to say Europe “gave the world order from chaos” is an assumption I’m sure the millions of people colonized, enslaved, and killed by Europeans in Africa, South America, and the Middle East, and Asia would strongly disagree with. The racism and feeling of white superiority on an average day in America may not have the same violence that Paris did, but it accumulates over time and is still in need of attention. I am not saying all white people or Europeans are “bad,” and that all people of other races are “good,” or that anyone’s suffering is more justified than another’s. I believe that those in Paris need our support, too. But it is unfair to make broad judgments about other people and their situations based on “facts” that are unfounded.

      • Cheri
        November 16, 2015 at 4:20 pm

No one’s making broad judgements, I stated facts and quite a few people I’ve talked to are getting annoyed at having the french flag shoved down their throats every post on Facebook. The trivial flag nonsense needs to stop – it means nothing because there is no money going towards the victims by changing your profile pic to have the flag overlay – most people are doing it because they are SHEEP and want to be in the “popular crowd”. I spoke to a friend of mine who changed her profile and when I asked her why she did the flag overlay she said “I don’t know” and stated she didn’t even know what happened… she told me she changed it because “Everyone else did” as she wanted to join the popular culture – there was NO meaning behind it. I think this is why most people changed it. I also stated some supporting facts to people (WHOM MAY HAVE FORGOTTEN ABOUT PAST FRENCH RELATIONS) as to WHY they should think about NOT changing their profile pic. It’s as simple as that and if you can’t comprehend that then I’m sure someone here can draw you a picture.

Cheri, your going on day 2 now fighting on a blog about a flag which represents to many people just showing their support of innocent people gunned down. You’ve already stated you were in the war so we get it, your not opposed to killing innocent civilians. This is why I strongly support our soldiers who come back get all the help they need. Have you sought any help yet?

          • Cheri
            November 16, 2015 at 8:42 pm

Funny you liberals are going on DAY 2 now of shoving your stupid flag graphics down everyone’s throats. Guess you can’t take what you dish out eh? I never said I didn’t care about the fact that people were gunned down, it’s sad it happened but they did not take proper precautions due to their “lack of involvement” in concerning themselves with stopping terrorists. Maybe you should seek some mental help because you’re obviously a libtard who “doesn’t get it”. I hope you get yourself an education someday and maybe you’ll understand things a bit better.

        • Nope, no thanks
          November 17, 2015 at 10:51 am

Just because your friend is an idiot doesn’t mean we all are who chose to change our profile picture. And who is “shoving the French flag down your throat?” Is anyone forcing you to go on Facebook? You sound like a very immature person, as well as intolerant.

  • Cheri
    November 15, 2015 at 8:06 pm

There is a reason people aren’t posting it on their FB page and mine is 2-fold:
    1. Changing your profile pic to the overlay means nothing – it does nothing – only to piss off those who aren’t interested. If you changed your profile pic to a french flag and it meant something (like a donation for every person who changed it) then it would be worth doing, but it’s just meaningless bandwagon drivel.

    2. France did NOT support the US war on terror AT ALL. They refused to help us find the 9/11 terrorist in iraq and have no interest in preventing terror and now all of a sudden the terrorist are showing up on THEIR doorstep and they’re all surprised. Well I’m NOT surprised and they made their beds and now they are facing the consequences of “disinterest”.

So if you are calling someone a douchenozzle for NOT putting the stupid French Flag on their profile pic you may want to check yourself in the mirror, because it takes one to know one.

Finnish: I have and they FINALLY decided to do something. The reason they finally decided to start “caring” about terrorist at all? Because they were attacked. I mentioned they were not interested in terrorism in the past which is the 100% truth (Go do some reading if you don’t believe me). The fact that they now see terrorism is a threat is understandable, just too bad they needed this much of a wake-up call.

It does help in some small way. Equivalent to wearing black at a funeral. It’s not going to save the world but it’s a nice gesture. If you can’t be there to donate blood or volunteer your time, then the very least you can do is change your profile pic. Having said that I don’t take offence to people who DON’T change their profile pics. That’s their choice. I have a friend who lost her cousin in the Paris attacks and she said seeing the sea of French flags and solidarity is a comfort to her.
