Last night I published this blog about an assault that took place in Billerica High School. It’s three mean girls confronting another girl and repeatedly threatening her because she attempted to follow one of their boyfriend’s on Instagram. She is shoved several times by one girl, and a second girl throws a binder directly at her face from close distance.
The most disturbing parts about the video were:
- The rest of the girls (there were at least a dozen) not only refusing to intervene, but encouraging the bullying to continue by laughing at the victim.
- When they put Rumpleforeskin on speakerphone and he calls the victim a slut, she laughs. That is a girl who is extremely nervous and scared, and is still actively trying to impress these girls because she cares about what they think. She likely wants to be friends with them, which is why she tried following the cool older boyfriend on IG, and this is the lesson they taught her. This is how she learned that she’s not good enough to associate with them.
I feel like the blog took it way too easy on the guy, who is a huge part of the problem here. He’s older, he thinks he’s hot shit, and he directs these girls to physically attack the victim. What kind of fucking pussy does something like that? He should be arrested and charged with whatever they can nail him on.
With that said, the original blog stated that the girls were Billerica High School cheerleaders, and their season should be canceled. This has prompted a lot of blowback in the comments.
Oh look, an Internet lawyer who thinks they know what libel is. Never seen that before. Let’s get our FACKS straight for a moment. This was the title of the blog:
Do they girls go to Billerica High School? Yes. They are sophomores as it turns out.
Are the girls cheerleaders? Yes. We saw pictures of them in Billerica cheering uniforms before their pages were deactivated. There are also pictures of them in other non-BHS affiliated cheering uniforms.
They go to BHS and they’re cheerleaders. The headline is accurate.
This took place in a BHS locker room. If it took place after school then that means they’re more than likely on a team. If it took place during gym class, then where the hell was the teacher? Ultimately the school is responsible for allowing this many girls to be unsupervised for this amount of time.
Now, if your daughter is on the BHS cheering team I get why you’d be upset that I initially said the season should be cancelled. We certainly don’t want innocent girls to be accused of something they didn’t do, so let me rephrase that. If there is more than one girl in this video on ANY athletic team at BHS (including cheering) the season should be cancelled. I stand by that. Some might say that you shouldn’t punish an entire team for the actions of a few. However, that video is chilling because clearly an atmosphere exists at that school where bullying is OK.
A few years ago at Lunenburg High School a football player had racist graffiti spray painted on his house which the parents alleged was put there by his teammates. The rest of the season was cancelled, and it turned out that the mother herself did it. In that case there was no evidence whatsoever that anyone on the football team did anything, and if they did it then it took place outside of school.
In this incident there is actual video evidence of a crime being committed on school property. If more than one of those girls are on the same sports team, then clearly that particular team has fostered a culture in which this is OK. And for that reason they should be shut down. Either schools should get serious about bullying or they should stop pretending to care. The MIAA suspends kids every year for smoking cigars at their high school graduations. Which is worse?
Then there was this:
Stop trying to normalize what I saw in that video. This is not a normal part of growing up. I live in the Mingya Valley now, but I graduated from Shepherd Hill because we moved a lot. Girls were plenty catty there but I can state unequivocally that if this happened in our locker room, someone would’ve put a stop to it, and that many girls wouldn’t be unattended in the locker room for that amount of time either. What happened in that video isn’t just mean, it was pure evil. This. Is. Not. Normal.
The Billerica Public Schools responded to the blog on the Facebook machine this morning:
Unreal. Newsflash Superintendent Tim Piwowar – we are more reputable then any other media outlet in the state. Ask for MSP Colonel Richard McKeon, former Lt. Colonel Daniel Risteen, former Lt. Colonel Francis Hughes, former Colonel Marian McGovern, former Major Sue Anderson, former K-9 Trooper Leigha Genduso, Alli Bibaud, District Attorney Joe Early, Laughlin Kennel, Maude the Fraud, PURR Cat Cafe, The Spencer-East Brookfield Regional School District, Mosaic Cultural Complex, Ashley Losapio, Central Auto Body, online food stamp salesmen, Slavemaster Steve, Lisa Dyer, or any of the other countless people who lost their jobs and were completely exposed as a direct result of Turtleboy’s world class investigative skills. Ask them just how reputable we are and get back to me.
Oh, and I loved this:
I am thoroughly disgusted by this attempt to exploit the children in our school in search of revenue-generating page clicks, and so I will not support their cause by naming them.
Revenue generating clicks? Oh, you mean like EVERY SINGLE MEDIA SITE ON THE INTERNET??!! I love when they try to discredit our stories by pointing out that we get paid for our labor. Yea, you really showed us dude. If your point is that a news outlet gets paid to report news, then you don’t have a valid point.
Last week, there was an incident that originated from a social media dispute among a peer group of students at Billerica Memorial High School that was not representative of who or what we are as a school system or a community.
Yea, but it kind of is representative of who or what you are as a school system. Your job as superintendent is to implement these anti-bullying programs, and as you can see in that video you failed miserably. The Red Sox just won the World Series largely because our manager and management was better than the Dodgers. Alex Cora was successful because he created a culture where everyone works together for the common good, and they won. Bobby Valentine created a culture where no one gave a shit and they lost. When you are the captain of the ship the performance of those under you reflects on the job you have done. Clearly you have completely failed, as that video reflects a culture where bullying is acceptable and not really out of the ordinary.
Maybe Tim Piwowar should resign. After all, this is a guy who was in trouble with the State Ethics Commission just a few months ago:
The Office of Campaign & Political Finance ruled in January that the School Department used public resources to send out information on the field-maintenance ballot question. Superintendent of Schools Tim Piwowar has been warned by the State Ethics Commission that his actions during a special election last year raised concerns under the state’s conflict-of-interest law. In the April 11 letter sent to Piwowar, the commission cited the section of the law that prohibits a public employee from using public resources to engage in political activity.
“When a public official engages in such conduct, he is using his official position to secure an unwarranted privilege that is unavailable to other political candidates or platforms,” the commission stated in the letter last week.
“Although I wrote, and the School Committee approved, the letter with the intent of being informational and factual, we discovered after speaking with OCPF that our distribution of this letter via email was a technical violation of their regulations,” Piwowar stated. “We apologize for this error, but are happy that this case is considered closed and commit to ensuring compliance in the future.
He admitted to violating state ethics laws, claimed he dinno nuffin, and got away with it because he apologized. And did I mention that he actually lives in Westford? Guess the Billerica Public Schools aren’t good enough for his family, which is why he chooses to live in the wealthier town to the east. It’s almost like this clown shouldn’t have this job.
The bottom line is that anyone who is focusing on the wording of the title of the blog instead of what actually happened in that video, is willfully ignoring the real issue here. We apologize for nothing.
