With the exception of guillotine operator, there may not be a more thankless job in the history of earth than mayor of the City of Champions. Nevertheless, as an elected public official, Mayor Bill Carpenter is supposed to set a favorable example for the citizens who elected him, and this latest snafu is a far cry from doing so.

This unprecedented situation began when Mayor Carpenter had a police-protection detail put in place for him last year after Carpenter’s former paperboy threatened to kill him. Only in Brockton. The astronomical cost of this detail has been largely scrutinized by city residents, and now with this new information coming to light, the Brockton natives are becoming increasingly restless.

Carpenter’s driving record, dating back to 1984, shows that his license has been suspended a frightening 12 times. However, the suspensions were not due to traffic offenses but instead “warrants, non-payment of taxes, and other issues”. Oh good, just who we need running the city.

Records also show that Carpenter has filed for bankruptcy three times, and as of 2004, owed $71000 in state taxes, federal taxes, and to other creditors. Carpenter has replied to his critics by saying, “I was in a situation that I owed more than I could pay.” Sounds good Billy! I think I’ll tell my bookie the same thing, I’m sure he’ll let me skate.
