The other day I blogged about how Dave Blondin, the owner of Prime Fitness in Oxford, opened his doors on Monday in defiance of the lockdown. He urged other gym owners to do the same, but because everyone is a coward in this state no one joined him. I had no idea at the time I wrote the blog that Dave Blondin was the owner, but he actually used to be a student of mine at Shepherd Hill 14 years ago. And I can honestly say I’ve never been more proud of a former student than I am of him right now. I taught him about Rosa Parks, and now he’s become the Coronavirus Rosa Parks. This letter makes me wanna puke.
“We all have a role to play in making this as safe a re-opening as possible.”
Dave Blondin and gym owners everywhere have done their job. They shut down for 10 weeks to “flatten the curve.” They tanked their businesses because they had no choice. Meanwhile hacks like this are getting paid and have not been affected by any of this.
Town Manager Jennifer Callahan is the definition of a bureaucrat. She went to private schools her whole life, used to be a State Rep but lost to Ryan Fattman years ago, and has moved from one admin job to the next. The guy she replaced as Town Manager in 2018 got paid $98,491 that year, so safe to say she’s making triple figures. She’s also a former RN, which to me makes her opinion on this whole situation rather biased.
Tyrant Callahan filed an injunction to shut down the gym because she is a tyrant. Today she sent her thug Thomas Purcell, the head of the Oxford Board of Health, to Prime Fitness. You gotta see this:
Just look at this slob.
No mask either!! These fucking frauds!!!
The guy with five chins is telling the gym owner what is and isn’t healthy. This is where America is at right now. If this pork roll really cared about public health in Oxford he’d be signing up for a membership.
The problem with this country is that we don’t consider our obesity problem to be a public health crisis, but it is. We glamorize being “plus sized” and shit on people for “body shaming.” Michelle Obama recognized this which is why she dedicated her 8 years as First Lady to focusing on healthy living for kids. We’re dealing with a virus that primarily preys on the elderly, sick, and morbidly obese. And our solution is to close down gyms? Brilliant.
Gyms are essential. Not just to the owners and employees who depend on them to make a living, but to the people who go there. I’ve personally gained 10 pounds during quarantine. I don’t have time to lift weights like back in the day, but I used to go to the gym on almost a daily basis to exercise. I need to sweat for 45 minutes a day for my own sanity. A lot of people do. I’d love to run outside but I can’t because my achilles is beat to shit from running. I feel gross and disgusting all hours of the day now, and I’m sure I’m not the only one. It affects you mentally and physically.
There’s absolutely no reason gyms can’t be open right now, especially Dave Blondin’s. Does this look dangerous to you?
If Walmart can take proper precautions to limit the transmission of a disease that isn’t a deadly threat to 99.9% of the population, then gyms can too.
Oxford’s State Rep is Paul Frost and their State Senator is Ryan Fattman. I plan on contacting them both for comment on this story, but they both should be vocal in their support for Dave Blondin and other gym owners. Small businesses like this are the life blood for the community, and the product that is provided by places like this (exercise, health, fitness) is essential to the community.
P.S. If they actually cared about public safety in Oxford they’d outlaw Carl’s Diner and their mammoth sized portions of sausage. Just kidding, I love Carl’s. I just need places like Prime Fitness to exist in order to justify going there.
