This popped up on the Discussing Fitchburg Facebook page today, and it sounds kind of familiar:

13165911_1127329260621063_2501642496939281440_n

So where is the bad part? I’ve been fired from a million jobs before and this is a gazillion times nicer than anything that’s ever been said to me.

The Gardner Ale House has the most delicious brunch that you can find in Northern Worcester County.

It’s phenomenal. When I first saw this I was hoping the text from the supervisor informing the high school senior that she was fired, would be a lot juicier. Instead I found a polite, understandable message that explains why the business relationship just wasn’t working out. Running a restaurant is a lot of work, and high school kids have rather unpredictable schedules. I don’t even know how many jobs I had in high school, but most of them ended for this kind of reason. My schedule as a student conflicted with their schedule as a business. No big deal. You just move onto the next job. Because that’s what you do when you’re a teenager in America.

But the comments section turned into a public flogging of the Gardner Ale House:

What the hell is wrong with people? This is almost the same exact thing that happened to Paul Conzo Salon and Spa in January. One person didn’t have a good experience with a business so the Facebook lynch mob threatened to boycott it and hold signs outside in protest:

It just boggles my mind that people think it’s OK to do this to a business. And a very reputable and well known business at that. When I think of Gardner I think of that big ass chair, and then I think of the Ale House. They’ve probably had thousands of employees come and go over the years, because that’s how it works when you’re running a business.

Screen Shot 2016-04-30 at 11.15.26 PM

They even started spamming the Gardner Ale House’s Facebook page:

Screen Shot 2016-05-11 at 2.36.31 PM

Hey here’s an idea – if you’re all juiced up about this, then don’t go. Problem solved. Stop trying to get other people to join the mob with you. Stop presenting one side of the story, knowing how the mob of morons will react. Stop redacting one person’s name while keeping the manager’s name visible. Stop spamming their page with your bullshit. There’s a million and one places you can get breakfast around here, so just go somewhere else and leave them alone. That’s how capitalism works.

And all this butthurt about being “unprofessional” to fire someone via text with bad grammar is absurd. Would it make you feel better if it was in Old English? It’s the Gardner Freaking Ale House. Did you expect something on formal letter head and a severance package?

First of all, the manager offered to have her come in and talk about it. But what would you rather her do if you were her? The girl was getting fired no matter what. Would it have been better if the manager wasted her time by calling her in and firing her in person? Would that not have hurt her feelings as much? Would you prefer she dwell on it during the ride home? I would’ve told the manager point blank – you knew I was fired when you called me to come down here. Give me $5 for gas money you oversensitive dooshnozzle.

Look, texts are just how things are done in 2016. Nobody has face to face conversations anymore, and that’s just fine with me. I don’t wanna waste my time looking at you. I don’t need the awkwardness. I don’t need the long drawn out silent pauses. I don’t wanna shake your hand and pretend like we’ll ever see each other again. There’s a reason that people text message instead of calling nowadays – it is a superior form of communication.

Naturally the butthurt patrol wasn’t understanding this:

Screen Shot 2016-05-11 at 2.43.32 PM

Yea, because losing a high school job is the same thing as getting cancer. Check and mate!!

The worst part about this sort of thing is the maliciousness. Look at this:

Screen Shot 2016-05-11 at 2.27.00 PM

That is just anger and saltiness over a situation they only know a small bit of information about, based off of some screenshotted text messages. The Ale House took down a bad review from their Facebook page, but instead of just moving on with their day these yahoos are conspiring to find other ways to damage a local business and staple of the community.

The bottom line is there would NEVER be outrage about this back in the 90’s. But kids today are soft because we treat them like delicate flowers. This was a harmless, standard firing. She’ll be OK. But instead the adults in her life are coddling and protecting her from imaginary bad guys. Quit being such a bunch of overdramatic junior high school coeds and let the girl move on with her life.

The owner of this establishment let my brother go for similar reasoning! And he busted his ass for them for years! This problem runs deeper than just letting someone go via text, even though I am not surprised as this suits their level of professionalism. Don’t hire high school students if you don’t want to work with them on their schedule! Respect and working together on schedule goes both ways in the restaurant industry. You can expect someone to cover more shifts then they need then when they may need one additional day off you fire them!

Ale house pizza’s are pretty great, and the double IPAs are yummy. It is a pub, not 5-star dining, and the food is pretty good as such. Congrats Stacey for making TB. Now it will be easier to get a table without all these little texting pukes hogging all the tables. My teens don’t answer phones, but texting, hell yeah, fastest thumbs in the east!

Keep boycotting fools. Save me a table Stacey!

The Ale House food is nothing to drool over, IMHO..Other than William’s, there isn’t a good restaurant in Gahdnah…I certainly like to support local business’s but Gahdnah has zero food talent…cripes even a freakin’ Applebee’s would clean up in this desolate city…

Looks like the delicate wallflowers feelings were hurt again. It is amazing how this country went from producing the greatest generation to the weakest most pathetic generation in such a short time. Now we have to truck up there to support the Ale House.

I currently have 11 people working for me. If one of my employees started flaking at the busiest times, like say a restaurant on Saturday night, and notified me via text message that they couldn’t make it, again for the umpteenth time, then yeah I might be tempted in the heat of the moment to text back, ya know what? Just don’t come in anymore. Also don’t know if they tried to call, what before and after texts got sent, etc etc etc. Too little to go on. Turtles are patient, there is probably more going on here.

The problem is it was done by text. Schedule a meeting and tell the girl face to face. Things people do threw texting is ridiculous and this is one of them.. speaking as a supervisor of a loyal food establishment. Do I think the ale house should be punished threw social media? No, not at all. But, supervisor should learn correct why to let someone go and she should be corrected by mangement. And also, what ever happened to training? Turn over rates aren’t always a good thing. They are just trying to run a business as said above or its a high school job. What about people who make culinary a career? Go into several local places, faces are the same and they have good things going for them . I’m a believer in showing people how to improve. If they can’t ok. Warn them and let them go. But, by text I feel it wasn’t done correctly.

  • Jamie Jones
    May 11, 2016 at 10:19 pm

First off, whoever wrote this article does not have all the text messages. A lot more was said between the employee and employer. The employer could not speak to the employee about this situation because of her “busy schedule”, also known as getting a pedicure. Clearly very important work being done by our kind boss Stacey. The employer also told the employee to go get a job that involves looks because she “performs shit”. It’s also extremely unprofessional to fire someone over text. Everything in business starts with the tone at the top and clearly Gardner Ale House needs to work on that.

Like dah. It’s obvious that work isn’t convenient for her schedule. Like why can’t this beer thinga majingy just be open like Monday afternoon from like 2:00 to 4:00 or something when she has a couple free hours to be there? I swear people who own businesses can be so rude. It’s like they are like jerks and stuff. HELLO some of us may have other things we want to do besides work at your stupid beer company like stop being slave drivers da!

You just reminded me of a kid I interviewed once. There was a list of stupid questions that corporate insisted I ask. One of them was about punctuality. The question was something to the effect of “what would your last employer tell me about your ability to show up when you’re scheduled?” The kid responded that he always shows up for work on time unless he has something better to do.

  • SJW
    May 11, 2016 at 9:29 pm

I don’t mind that the girl was let go by a text. The text itself bothered me because it pussy foots around the subject.

The text should have just said…….!!!!!!!!!YOU”RE FIRED!!!!!!!!!!

    May 11, 2016 at 9:23 pm

    Bullshit TB…
    1. Their brunch sucks & is wayyyy over priced.
    2. Their beer sucks too
    3. The updated menu is garbage
    4. Anyone who fires a teenager because her senior schedule close to graduation is a fucking loser. After she was texted back about the schedule all of a sudden the boss broad was going to say it was about performance. Crock O Shit.

Would i boycott the joint over this? No. But just because you are the only game in town doesn’t give you the right to treat people like shit.

  • Ginger
    May 11, 2016 at 8:57 pm

Let’s remember that we don’t know the managers side of the story. How many times did she call in sick to go to a football game? How many days off did she request to go to a prom outside of her own school’s prom? How many weekends was she unable to work for whatever reason? Couldn’t have been graduation related because school is not open on the weekends.

HOWEVER, I do believe a text was not the way to let someone go. Maybe she deserved it, but the manager should have taken the higher road and done it in person. Just because it’s 2016 and everybody texts, doesn’t mean managerial positions should act like 17 year olds and text a dismissal. Think about it.

    • jen
      May 12, 2016 at 7:06 am

If you read more text posted teen states she found all coverage for her events for school and was picking up shifts for others that called in sick on the days she could work.

  • Worc Taxpayer
    May 11, 2016 at 8:42 pm

The employee couldn’t work Saturdays or Sundays, a restaurants busiest days, but was able to fill in on Mondays and Wednesdays when no one is there. What did he expect? For the Ale House to rearrange their hours of operation to fit ONE part time employee who probably worked 8 hours a week, max. It sucks to lose a job you like but if you are unable to work when the business needs you to it is a bad fit all around. After the jagoff graduated maybe he could have reapplied for the summer because school was no longer a problem but now that option is off the table because he was a douchebag and this asshole thinks he is owed a job. That is life Todd bugger off!

  • Woodiculous
    May 11, 2016 at 7:55 pm

Asshats who are complaining are clueless. There are 2 obvious facts that should be dope slapping your fat, glazed look faces:

1-the teen employee clearly was texting at the last minute to tell the manager that she was fucking him/her by not showing up. The manager replied via text.

2A bar manager is typically not Warren Buffett, so you douches better get over yourselves about how “unprofessional” a 25 year old bar manager dealing with no show employees communicates.

While I don’t condone the Facebook lynch mob that some schmuck is trying to drum up, it IS a tad gauche to fire someone by text. Even a phone call would have been better and more personal.

    • JenB
      May 11, 2016 at 8:56 pm

That is assuming she answered the phone. We don’t know that they didn’t try to call her. We really don’t know anything other than what was written in these two texts. I am now an empty nester of nearly two years. Getting my daughter to actually answer her phone was near impossible. She would text no problem, but speak on the phone….not happening. I thought it was just me, but I observed her. She didn’t answer her phone for a lot of people. This was not specific to my daughter either. I watched her other friends. This phenomena perplexed me. The phone would ring and they wouldn’t answer it, only to text a few seconds later. It felt like the Twilight Zone during her teenage years. She and her friends RARELY actually spoke with people on the phone.

I am reserving judgment on the text firing as I don’t have the full story. Personally, I would not fire anyone by text because it isn’t professional. Well maybe I would if they were a teenager who never answered their phone when I called and did all of their communications with me, the employer, by text. Even then, I probably wouldn’t fire by text. I guess I would have to leave her a voicemail to let her know we needed to discuss her continued employment and keep my fingers crossed she actually checked her voicemail.

What I do have an opinion about was the use of ur, u and other abbreviations by text. I mean if you have to resort to the firing by text, at least take the time to type out the words correctly. I cannot stand that. It is so bad that I had a dentist office reply to an email to me with zero punctuation, capitalization and those stupid abbreviated words. I guess the Office Manager of that practice thought it was reasonable to type that way because she was responding to an email on her iPhone. Professional communication skills be damned…she’s on her iPhone. God help us.

Still not a way to fire someone

  • May 11, 2016 at 5:42 pm

If I were a kid in that position I would have accepted the text over driving over there. It’s not in any way similar to a diagnosis text in any way. Hell, I get voice mails from my N.P. about test results, but nothing life shattering. Text is the new voice mail. She offered right from the get go to meet with the girl. No big deal with the mode of the message. I don’t answer my phone ever, I tell people to text or email me, yes, even my boss. Fuck, I have a google voice number that I use to get messages redirected via email.
It was a matter of, “You don’t have the time right now to invest in your job, so I’m letting you go to pursue your other objectives.” Sounds like there would be a possibility of rehire if that were the case. No big deal. Finishing high school, attending prom those take a top priority over a part time job at that stage in life. No big deal.
Working in food service or retail involves nights and weekends, period. No ifs ands or buts about it. If you can’t invest that time, move on.

Firing someone isn’t easy nor is being fired. The manager chose to do it in a way I never would nor would many others but it was better than having her drive there anticipating work and being told she didn’t work there anymore. The better way to do this would have been a phone call but with everyone tied to social media now I guess texting is now the norm?

The real sad part is that most seem to use assbook for every facet of their lives. Any time anyone gets insulted, gets drunk, beat up, cheated on they run to Mr Suckerbergs creation and lay out their personal life for everyone to see. Stupid. Stupid. Stupid.

I have to disagree with TB on one point here. Unless there had been a previous meeting to discuss this situation, firing someone via text message is totally classless and poor grammar to boot is unprofessional. The saving grace here would be if the employer has offered to be a job reference. Other than that, its just time to move on to another job.

What TB also fails to mention is what the ACTUAL response by the Manager was where TB states… “When I first saw this I was hoping the text from the supervisor informing the high school senior that she was fired, would be a lot juicier. Instead I found a polite, understandable message that explains why the business relationship just wasn’t working out. ” What actually happened was the Manager was telling her it was her schedule and then texting “shit, sent that before I meant too” followed by “its not your schedule its your performance.. Go be a super model or a nurse or a sports newscaster and come back and be my friend and tell me about it after” then she proceeded to continue on with she was too busy to meet with the girl and her father because she was out “having a pedi”… Get the facts straight and publish the whole story if you want to publish a story! The Gardner Ale House is not the issue it is the Unprofessional, immature “manager” that is the problem!

Sounds like things just didn’t work out. It also depends on the relationship between management and the student. ‘I can’t let you work here anymore’ sounds like management was letting the individual work sporadic hours in the first place.

I hate how everyone and their mother uses yelp and other sites as petulant revenge tools. If you don’t like an establishment, don’t go; you don’t have to ruin the livelihoods of others. Everyone has an opinion, and everyone makes the mistake of thinking they all matter.

It’s a high school job. Waaahhhhhh. Wait until the real world where you will be competing against nepotism, incompetent management, absurd corporate sensitivity training on everything under the sun, and just overall ass-hattery. I can’t just not show up to work because of a scheduling conflict. Once you enter the real world, work becomes your schedule, and you have to plan life around it. Sorry if reality is going to hit you like a dump-truck as soon as you step off that graduation line.

So true kingsraisins and real. What some of these members of our blinded youth don’t realize is that in the real world they’re just a number that has to continuously work hard to create any kind of job security. Only a hand full of kids gets it. Many do not and I blame Mom and Dad for coddling them way too long.

The real world will eat them up and spit them out if they don’t pull their heads out of their asses. As far a text message of termination? Like the article said she was afforded an opportunity to discuss the matter in person. Fair enough in 2016.

Thanks Bob. While I don’t agree with firing someone via text per se, I am of the belief that in a free market, if I own a business I should be able to fire someone whichever way I please. Via text, song-o-gram, phone call, etc. If that individual doesn’t like it, let them start their own competing business and see how they like dealing with groups of part-time teenage employees.

I’m not even saying the firing was fair. But whoever said any of this was fair? As an employee you need to make yourself valuable-that’s how you gain job security. Clearly, this job wasn’t this teenager’s ‘forever’ position, or he/she would go out of their way to be at work when they were supposed to regardless of scheduling conflicts. I didn’t walk at either my undergrad or Masters graduation ceremonies because guess what, I had to work during the allotted times. It was my choice to work rather than pay for a cap and gown, and to sit and listen to someone tell me how great I was in earning a piece of paper that I had to pay to get in the first place.

You would be the best business man in the 1800’s. Too bad the silly government had to come up with laws to protect employees and ensure that business was conducted fairly. I wonder if Steve Jobs wished he could just send out a group chat to all the employees he was firing that day?

Hell’s yeah. People who have a problem with a business and then just go running to Yelp or to the BBB to file a complaint before reaching out to the company to help resolve their problem are total douche bags. It is something that I always have to be watching out for, despite the fact that it has only happened to me once in the past 10 years of employment at the company I work for.

That one incident was absolutely ridiculous and luckily, the BBB ended up siding with my company/me. This one lady was having trouble contacting me, because my daughter had just been born, which she was fully aware of. Because she was apparently more important than the birth of my second child, she decided to write a horrible complaint with the BBB. After explaining my side of the story, they ended the complaint in my favor…but the problem itself runs deeper…people today have absolutely no idea of the repercussions of their spiteful actions – when a new customer is looking for work in my profession, they’re going to check reviews on the web first, and if one company has bad reviews based on a customer’s incorrect interpretation of a situation, the new customer may decide to take their business elsewhere.

I think it is very important, for these people who jump the gun and post these negative things to other businesses, to take a couple days and consider what they’re doing first. One misunderstanding and lead to someone being mistakenly fired, it can ruin peoples lives for fuck sake.

That would require these people being caring and rational thinkers. They aren’t. People that are willing to pick up the pitchfork and join the angry mob don’t care about the other side of the story or lives they may be destroying. They look foolish every time they so quickly jump on the Publicly Destroy bandwagon. I would call them out on their 17th century Salem Witch Trials behavior or comment on what pitchfork they were using today, but I am not confident they would understand the dig.

So I always take the little survey before reading the article. So I don’t get swayed by what is written. Being in a leadership role, I personally would never fire someone via a TXT. So I chose no. Then I read the TXT and here response to it. Which she understood and was bothered by it but kept her cool. Now my question is, who filled her mind with nonsense for her to go and make a big deal about this? Her parents? Her SJW friend?

I stand by what I said, bud. I’m in my early 30s so maybe it’s a generational gap or something, but I still think a real man would fire you by looking you dead in the eye. I wouldn’t stop going to this place if it was in my rotation over it. All I ever said was that texting someone to fire them is a cowardly, antisocial move.

      May 11, 2016 at 3:45 pm

The other passive aggressive thing they did was take her off the schedule and then let her see that schedule before notifying her. That’s a lousy move as well. Again – not worth trashing the place and trying to get people to stop going there, but it’s still weak and my guess is they won’t fire people via something you can take a screenshot of.

So you’re relating a 17 year old that doesn’t consistently show up for work at her part time job with someone getting cancer?

Get some perspective of size and scope.

          May 11, 2016 at 4:35 pm

          Yeah? So?
When I thought I had AIDS from a weekend at P-Town, I had a sit down meeting with my Dr.
If he had told me I has HIV- via text, I would have been happy, but would have had a lot of follow up questions that would be difficult to text.

            May 11, 2016 at 4:55 pm

I don’t think you understand my point. Being told you have either Cancer or HIV via text does not compare to a 17 year old who doesn’t show up to work at his/her part time job being fired via text. If you don’t see that, you shouldn’t be allowed to operate a motor vehicle, own a home, or vote.

In a free market, a business owner should be able to fire someone however which way they choose. If the employee doesn’t like it, they can simply start their own business to compete, or acquire a new skill set to add value to their employment.

Lastly, I would just like to point out to you that HIV and AIDS are not the same thing, as you do not seem to comprehend via your post.

fair enough, but I’m still going there. Good food! Worcester makes terrible mistakes all the time, and I don’t boycott the city because of a few bonehead incidents.
