Boston.com: Somerville police officers are asking that the city’s mayor remove a banner supporting the “Black Lives Matter” movement from City Hall and replace it with one proclaiming “All Lives Matter.” In a Tuesday letter addressed to Mayor Joseph Curtatone, the Somerville Police Employee’s Association, the bargaining unit for 90-95 patrol officers, called the city’s support of the Black Lives Matter movement and the display of the banner “deeply” troubling.
“It is as inconceivable to us as it is demoralizing that our City would propagate its support for this movement while standing silent over the seemingly daily protest assassinations of innocent police officers around the country,” the association wrote.
Citing what they saw as “fringe elements” of the movement, officers in the association argued that the activists have at times provoked violence against police around the nation, including the recent shooting in Dallas that killed five officers.
“The point is that these incidents have incited more than protests; they have incited some within the protest movement to use violence against police officers who had nothing to do with the shootings of black men, and have done so before all of the facts of each case were known,” the letter said.
While the association acknowledged that black lives, as well as those of other minorities, matter just as much as white lives, it argued that Somerville’s open support for the movement could imply that the department thinks otherwise.
“At the same time, we strongly object to a public banner sponsored by the City that [implicitly] paints police officers as the killers of innocent citizens of color when there is no evidence whatsoever that the police officers in the City are in anyway using their police power in a discriminatory of unlawful way,” the letter said.
Instead, the officers asked that the banner be replaced with one that reads “All Lives Matter,” a move they believe would have the mayor standing in solidarity with the police department.
“The vast majority of police officers across this country are tasked with shielding, protecting, and assisting elements of the protest movement that loath them, spit on them, intentionally injure them and wish death upon them,” the association wrote. “Nonetheless, it is generally true that officers perform these very tasks with professionalism, honor, integrity, courage, and without hesitation.”
The letter didn’t sway Curtatone, who said he doesn’t plan to remove the banner.
“My unwavering support for our police officers does not and cannot preempt our commitment to addressing systemic racism in our nation,” Curtatone said in a statement to Boston.com. “I’ve made very clear to our officers that we should be thankful for—and reinforce—what we have here in Somerville: a safer community thanks to the highest quality policing by a force dedicated to community policing, de-escalation, proper use of force, and anti-bias awareness.”
Joe Curtatone is literally the worst mayor in America. He made headlines last year when he urged the District Attorney to drop the charges against the idiotic white hippies who recklessly blockaded I-93 during rush hour traffic.
So yea, it’s not surprising at all that he’s flying the flag of terrorists over Somerville City Hall. And anyone who doesn’t think that BLM is a terrorist hate group is a child who isn’t living in reality. They’ve been behind assassinations of police officers in Dallas and Baton Rouge. They’ve led marches where “fuck the police” and “What do we want? Dead cops,” were the chants of choice. They have shown time and time again that they do not in fact believe that black lives matter as they have been silent on the tens of thousands of black Americans who have been killed in the past year by people who are not white cops. They riot when they don’t get their way. They make up lies about “hands up, don’t shoot.” They rally behind thugs and criminals like Michael Brown and Alton Sterling. They are pure evil.
But most importantly it’s not appropriate for a municipality to fly the flag that represents a political philosophy. It’s like flying the flag of the Republican or Democratic party. You don’t do that. If you align yourself with their ideology, that’s fine. But it shouldn’t be flown over City Hall, because not everyone agrees with the hateful rhetoric they spew.
And I just wanna say one thing to the Somerville Police Department – good for you guys!! I’m glad to see they took a stand. Look what it says on the banner:
“Somerville Police Department.” If the majority of members of the SPD don’t want to drive by City Hall and see a symbol of a hate group that spits on them and calls them pigs, then they shouldn’t have to. Especially since they’re effectively endorsing it with their name on there. As if they stand together with these terrorists.
The Somerville Police Department went along with this at first because they’re team players. They genuinely wanted to believe that this group had good intentions. But as time went on we found out BLM’s intentions were pure evil.
The bottom is that this banner is unnecessary because no one in Somerville disputes its message. If there were large segments of the population chanting “black lives don’t matter” then I could see the need for this. But black lives do matter. And they’ve always mattered to the Somerville PD, who protect them on a daily basis. The mere fact that it says “black lives matter” implies that many police officers don’t believe this. If Curtatone could name one person that felt this way, I’d say keep it up. But he can’t. Because it’s a meaningless, common sense slogan that has transformed into “fuck the police” as time has gone one.
Many in the Somerville PD have messaged us before on Facebook, disgusted with the actions of their mayor. Turtleboy has a growing following there, because many in this Cambridge Jr. city are sick and tired of the bullshit. Here’s a small sampling of the morons they have to live amongst:
Guess what all four of these people people have in common? You got it – they’re all white:
Because white people are the worst. Seriously, go through any of their Facebook profiles. You won’t find a single black person in any of their pictures. Do you know what would happen if this person right here:
Came across this person right here:
in a dark alley?
She’d shit her depends and clutch her pearls for dear life. Because her interactions with professional criminals like Alton Sterling are non-existent. It’s easy to be a social justice warrior on Facebook. But if people like these pearl clutchers were as self righteous as they pretend to be, they’d at least live in place likes Baton Rouge and Ferguson for a little bit. But of course they’d never do that, because they don’t know what to do when they’re not surrounded by wealthy white people like themselves.
The people who spout this bullshit the loudest are always the white people who have self segregated themselves as far away from black people as possible. They feel kind of guilty, and they kind of wonder if they’re racist. So this is how they feel better about themselves. They can hold their heads up high at the organic coffee shop book club tomorrow because they copy and pasted some talking points based on false narratives on Facebook.
“My life is not threatened due to prejudice like a black man.”
This is coming from a woman who has had virtually no contact with black men her entire life. Her entire understanding of black people comes from watching Family Matters in the 90’s.
This was the most ridiculous comment though:
Invesigate the SPD? For what? Having an opinion? Asking for the mayor not to openly endorse an organization that kills cops? Yea, how dare they do that. Didn’t they read those links that Susanne shared about institutional racism? They were published on Salon, The Guardian, the Huffington Post, and the Atlantic. All the other white people from the burbs were sharing them too.
The bottom line is that no city should be endorsing political statements, never mind endorsing a hateful group that’s killed more cops in the last month than Alton Sterling has paid in child support his entire life.
