It’s a fun time to be a Celtic fan. We’re really good again, but we’re also not even remotely close to being in Cleveland’s universe, never mind Golden State’s. Luckily thanks to the stupidity of the Brooklyn Nets we have more draft currency than any team in the NBA. So for the last few months (and the next few months going forward) we’ve been bombarded with rumors of so and so coming here and building a team that can win now and in the future.

The big four names everyone’s been buzzing about have been, 1) Jimmy Butler, 2) Paul George, 3) Kristaps Porzingis, and 4) Gordon Heyward. Heyward is a free agent so we wouldn’t have to give up shit to get him. George will be a free agent next year and has stated he wants to sign with the Lakers and start the next super team, so trading for him could be a one year thing. It’s risky. Butler was traded to Minnesota, so he’s out. And the asking price on Porzingis is insanely high. So the idea now is that we sign Heyward, which will attract George, who then likes Boston and winning so much that he signs a long term deal with us:

Dumb, dumb, dumb.

Newsflash – a team of Heyward, Thomas, Horford, George, and whoever else, is not good enough to beat the Golden State Warriors. And it won’t be good enough for several years. Everyone on Golden State who matters is under the age of 30. They should win the next three NBA titles. If a team of Kevin Love, Kyrie Irving, and LeBron is not even remotely good enough to challenge GS, then how is a team without a top 10 player supposed to? They can’t win a championship with that team, and in Boston everything we do is done to win championships. That’s what separates us form loser cities like Indianapolis. We don’t do Conference Championships. We do duckboat parades.

The plan here should be one of two things – wait for GS and Cleveland to get old, or trade for Anthony Davis. Because unibrow is a superstar and he’s good enough to build a championship team around. Paul George isn’t. Davis is also younger than the rest of those guys. When the Warriors get old he will still be in his prime. He’s worth trading for. Paul George isn’t.

That’s why trading the #1 overall pick is gonna go down is the dumbest move in NBA history. I like Danny Ainge, but he overthought that one. The Celtics should be thinking about 4-5 years from now when GS and Cleveland get old. You do that by taking the best young players you can, and this year that player was Markelle Fultz. But instead of just taking him he traded it for two top five picks. So let’s look at the difference between #1 overall picks and #3 overall picks from the last 10 years to see if there’s a big difference:

#1: Ben Simmons, Karl Anthony Towns, Andrew Wiggins, Anthony Bennett, Anthony Davis, Kyrie Irving, John Wall, Blake Griffin, Derrick Rose, Greg Oden.

Irving, Wall, and Davis are all top 10 players. Towns is really close. Wiggins is a top 25 player and so is Griffin when he’s healthy. Rose is injury prone but has won an MVP and led his team to a 60 win season. Bennett and Oden were complete busts. Simmons is too early to tell. So that’s 7 out of 10 that worked out great. Now let’s check the last 10 #3 picks:

#3: Jaylen Brown, Jahlil Okafor, Joel Embid, Otto Porter, Bradley Beal, Enes Kanter, Derrick Favors, James Harden, OJ Mayo, Al Horford.

Harden is a top 10 player. Beal is a top 25 player. Horford is a dependable top 40 player. Okafor is a one dimensional player who is looking like a bust. Embiid is good but he’s played 28 games in three years. Porter is a role player and so is Favors. Mayo has been good at times, average at others. Kanter is a complete bust. Brown is too early to tell, but he hasn’t shown any signs that he’s going to be a star. You can usually tell by now. So basically three out of 10 have worked out.

In other words, there is a gigantic difference between 1 and 3. Meanwhile, here’s the last 10 #5 picks:

Kris Dunn, Mario Hezonja, Dante Exum, Alex Len, Thomas Robinson, DeMarcus Cousins, Ricky Rubio, Kevin Love, Jeff Green.

Cousins and Love are top 20 players. Rubio is an underrated top 40 player. Green has shown flashes of brilliance but is inconsistent. Len, Robinson, and Hezonja are epic busts. Exum has been a bust so far but has shown flashes that he could be reliable. Dunn is too early to tell. If you’re keeping track at home the moral of the story here is that the #5 pick is hardly any better than the #3 pick. But the #3 pick is significantly worse than the #1 pick.

So yea, trading down to get the #3 pick just so you can get the # 5 pick next year is a dumb move to make. This ain’t the NFL where you commonly find players in later rounds that have significant impacts. It’s a superstar driven league where only superstars are allowed to win titles. Of course you’re building all these chips to trade for someone like Anthony Davis then I’m all forit. But if you’re just stockpiling all these players because you think they’re the future, or you want to trade them for Paul George, you’re not gonna get duckboat parades from that. And ultimately duckboat parades are why we have sports in Boston.

The bottom line is that this is what Kevin Durant going to Golden State has done to the NBA. This is why it was a bitch move. Because there’s no reason for teams like the Celtics to even try to trade for players like Paul George. No matter what they do it won’t be good enough for the next 4-5 years. The only hope for the league is just to wait for the Warriors to get old.
