MassliveA controversial poem performed as part of a Latino Heritage Month assembly Friday was not “subjected to sufficient review” by school administrators, the acting principal of Holyoke High School and the district’s superintendent wrote in a letter to the school community Monday. The statement, issued by Superintendent Stephen Zrike and interim high school Principal Dana Brown, urged calm in the wake of criticism, hostile comments and threats that lit up social media over the weekend. Zrike and Brown called for students, their parents, and faculty and staff to “come together” as a school community to promote unity, diversity and tolerance.

The tempest followed a student’s performance of a poem that, while celebrating her Hispanic heritage, blamed whites for a culture of ongoing, systematic oppression of minorities. Video of the performance uploaded to Facebook resulted in a cascade of jeers from all corners of the internet.

Part of that wave of criticism — and the part that is perhaps most concerning to school officials and the police — is the distribution of what appeared to be a “smack down” list targeting students with violence.

The letter from Zrike and Brown confirmed the list exists — but its intentions seem to have been exaggerated as it bounced around the internet. An investigation by school officials determined that following the assembly, the list “was generated by another student who felt disrespected,” the letter reads.

The letter continues: “The piece of paper listed first names only and did not allude to or promote any type of action against or violence toward these students. It was in the sharing and re-sharing of the list on social media that an undetermined person added something about ‘smacking’ the students.”

Police are investigating the note and trying to determine who turned it into a threat. If the person is identified, action will be taken, the letter reads.

In regard to the initial performance that triggered the fallout, Zrike and Brown said that while all students have a right to express their opinions, the Latino Heritage assembly was perhaps not the best forum for this particular message.

“Students certainly have the right to express their point of view, but it is a school’s responsibility to provide the appropriate guidance, support and context for their message,” the letter reads.  “While well-intentioned and consistent with the Holyoke Public Schools’ and Holyoke High School’s commitment to celebrating and encouraging a diverse and inclusive school environment, it is clear that some of the performances were not subjected to sufficient review in advance of the required assembly.”

Alright, first of all, gotta love how Masslive acts like this story just showed up at their headquarters. Newsflash – this all would’ve been covered up if it weren’t for the turtle. That’s a fact. The comments section is making that abundantly clear. It’s just such a bad look for Masslive. They try to keep stories like this out off of their website because it doesn’t fit their narrative. Then the turtle makes that impossible and they act like they’re breaking the news. Sad.

Ya know what this letter is though? A failed attempt to play both sides:

“While some in the audience found the assembly empowering, regrettably, others were offended by portions of the presentation.”

It doesn’t matter who felt “empowered” by it. It was blatantly racist and not even remotely close to being appropriate for a school assembly.

Then there was this:

“While well-intentioned and consistent with the Holyoke Public Schools’ and Holyoke High School’s commitment to celebrating and encouraging a diverse and inclusive school environment, it is clear that some of the performances were not subjected to sufficient review in advance of the required assembly. For this, we express our regret and take full responsibility. We also provide our assurance that we will be revising our protocols and procedures for the review and approval of proposed student presentations at such school-sponsored events going forward.”

Translation – “We let kids say whatever they want in the name of diversity, so long as they are not white. We didn’t expect to get caught like this, but Turtleboy fucked our world up, and now we have to issue a meaningless statement about how we’re not gonna let this happen again.”

This was a cop out:

Following the assembly, we learned that a list of names of a few students was circulated on social media. After our initial investigation, it was determined that the list of student names was generated by another student who felt disrespected by these students. The piece of paper listed first names only and did not allude to or promote any type of action against or violence toward these students. It was in the sharing and re-sharing of the list on social media that an undetermined person added something about “smacking” the students. That posting is currently being investigated in collaboration with the Holyoke Police and appropriate action will be taken with regard to any individual who is found to be advocating violence against any member of the Holyoke Public Schools’ community.

The list was made by “students who felt disrespected by these students.” Why are they making excuses for these little pukes? Who cares if they felt disrespected? How the hell did they feel disrespected? The kids who were being told that they were slave masters were the ones getting disrespected, and they weren’t the ones who made the hit list.

And what is there to investigate? We already know who did it. Her name is Illiana Rodriguez and she admitted it to us last night:

“Where does it say I’ll do it though?”

She doesn’t deny that she made the list. She doesn’t deny that she was the one who put it on social media with the words, “everyone who sat deserved to get smacked the fire outta em.”

“Where does it say I’ll do it though?”

That question specifically implies that she wrote the list. She’s admitting to putting it all out there, the only thing she’s disputing is that it’s an actual threat, because she doesn’t specifically say she’s going to smack them. Just that they deserve to get smacked the fire outta em.

If your kid was on this list, would you feel safe sending them to Holyoke High School? I sure as shit wouldn’t. The kids who are threatening your children are being honored by the school, and their English teacher wants to add their racist slam poetry to the curriculum. This list is OBVIOUSLY threatening in nature, and was tweeted out to instill fear in the students on that list. It’s also sexist and homophobic (if Michael is gay) because it says he “talks like a girl.”

They said appropriate action would be taken against the person that sent this out. Well, this is her:

(Why is everything on that wall in Spanish? Do they not teach in English at Holyoke High School? Or is this a Spanish class? If it is, then why are there so many students who are clearly native Spanish speakers taking a class where they learn to speak Spanish?)

We expect them to take immediate action against her. Schools are supposed to take this shit seriously considering, ya know, Columbine.

Stephen Zrike is the “receiver” that the state has appointed to be the superintendent because of the state takeover in Holyoke.

Here’s something he said last year:

“I wouldn’t pat ourselves on the back for that. I know where I want us to be….I don’t think (Latino) families have a voice yet….There is some fear,” Zrike said.

He doesn’t think Latino families have a voice yet. That’s why they’re having assemblies like this and letting these spoiled, entitled brats spew racism at their white peers. He created the atmosphere where this has become OK.

Another big concern of his is reaching out to families:

Reaching out to school system families, and especially making an effort with Latinos, is key. The expectation should not be that families must seek out the school system, but that the system seek them out, Zrike said.

Because lazy ass parents who can’t be bothered to find out what’s going on in their children’s schools should be catered to. And how do they do that?

Each school has been required to submit a parent and family engagement plan. “The expectation is that parents have input into the process,” he said.

So this was well over a year ago. What input have the parents of the students on that hit list had in the process? Did they sign up for an assembly where their children would be told that they are slave masters whose mothers can’t cook? Did they sign up to have their children put on a hit list?

The rest of the letter, which can be found here, is just bullshit and buzzwords. It’s all meaningless if they don’t force this student to apologize for her racist speech, demand an apology from any teacher that allowed this to happen, and punish the girl who admits to putting out the hit list.

Interesting how the SUPTIDintendent makes an excuse to justify bad behavior. Had a white boy stood up and made similar statements about blacks, hispanics, or muslims, he would have been suspended or expelled.

Your better school districts have parents who are involved with their children and they have parents who volunteer to spend time in the schools.

Back in the day Spanish 1 was full of Latinos that came for an easy A.
    They all failed.

And I remember the teacher was from Spain and she would reprimand them if they spoke Spanglish in class

I bet they all gets A’ s in Holyoke and that teacher would’ve been been burned at the stake for her ‘racial intolerance’

Has anyone mentioned the fact that she couldn’t even come up with an original insult against white people. The whole “your food is flavorless” line is ripped straight from the movie “Gran Torino.” The grandmother says it to Clint Eastwood, so she even plagiarized her “amazing poem.”

No because the grandmother in the movie was Asian an argument could be made for cultural appropriation, just sayn’…

Rest assured if my white son made a “list” and posted it to social media, I’d have SWAT doing a no-knock raid at my house at 4am and my kid would be expelled from school.

In other words you didn’t do your fucking job. Three days detention for all of the faculty!

I like this ‘required assembly’. Sucks to be the kids who actually thought they were going to class to learn something that day instead of getting this shit stuffed down their throat.

Ghetto Bunnies don’t realize that white people are not the problem. They have every single oppurtunity to do well in this world but all they can do is make excuses when they find themselves in a triple decker multi family with ten bastard children. It is 2017 and there is affirmative action. Do well in school and you will get out of that shit stain city. I grew up in a poor family in a bad city and that was motivation to do well and move.

“diverse and inclusive school environment”….doesn’t the mere fact that the student was able to spout her divisive poetry (and I use the word poetry quite loosely) make it obvious that the school has failed miserably at being inclusive? Are the leaders of these schools really that obtuse?

LOL ALL YEAR BABY. We don’t need a designated, white-sponsored month to celebrate white heritage. It’s all around you, all the time, 24/7, 365. You’re privileged to BE here, chica! Unless you want to return to that shithole narco-state of Mexico where half the GDP is money shipped back from El Norte. Sounds like you need us, more than we need you!

I used to work at the Holyoke schools. The people there-especially the
students, like this girl, are rotten, racist, entitled low-life people.
New teachers are avoiding it because parents think it’s racist if you’re not willing
to learn Spanish. Everything revolves around them (the schools are like 85%
Latino) and the other races get brushed aside.
      Adios Ghetto Amigos.
