Quick update on the “Reverend” Aaron Payson story. Here’s the email he sent Councillor Michael Gaffney:
It has come to my attention that through recent Facebook interactions, by “liking” statements made by Emily Megan (
redacted) in a post that appeared on your Facebook page from September 10-19 and by liking a video posted a few weeks ago by Turtleboy, which utilizes Adolf Hitler as a means to mock Mayor Joe Petty, you have explicitly condoned sentiments that are at least extraordinarily offensive to many Worcester residents and for some, including me, constitute a form of hate speech. I am a resident of Tatnuck, and have been for 16 years. I find Ms. redacted’s comments demeaning of a neighborhood that prides itself on being diverse.
So basically a woman made a comment on her Facebook page that Gaffney hit the “like” button for. God forbid. Payson doesn’t like this because as a resident of Tatnuck he said this, “characterized the neighborhood I lived in in inaccurate and derogatory manner.”
Here’s what he told the City Council last night: As part of her comments, Rev. Payson told the City Council the woman wrote that the Tatnuck area of Worcester is nice, but it’s mostly “Jewish and Albanian” natives.
So what was the deragatory part? Well, the Telegram and Gazette failed to actually look into this so we did it for them. Here’s the original post. Notice what she says about Jewish and Albanian people in her neighborhood.
“Tatnuck is nice, but it’s mostly Jewish and Albanian natives (awesome btw, I love it.)”
Ya see what Payson did there? He purposely left out the part in parentheses. Ya know, the most important part. The part where she says diversity in Tatnuck is a good thing. As a matter of fact she says it’s awesome. Then Gaffney hit the like button because he agrees that diversity is a good thing.
Payson told the City Council that the Facebook posting characterized his neighborhood in a deragatory manner. As you can see, that was a lie. It did the exact opposite. We just proved that this guy went out of his way to purposely mislead the public in a blatant political attack on the opponent of the guy he supports. Real religious leaders don’t go out of there to mislead the public like that. They’re also not supposed to lie.
The Telegram and Gazette reported this lie yesterday, and thus the lie continued to spread across the interwebs. But as you know, we are addicted to the truth over here at Turtleboy Sports and we had to get to the bottom of it. Wasn’t that hard either.
The bottom line is that we have heard from multiple people that Payson is a decent guy. And don’t get me wrong, I’m sure he’s done a lot of good for the community. But why can’t he just stick to doing good deeds instead of lying to the public and leading political witch hunts? Why is he bothering Councilor Gaffney but not all of the other City Councilors who have written far more objectionable things online? Oh yea, because he’s a politician first and a pastor second. Too bad, because like we said, he’s apparently done some good for people in the past. If you do good things for the community we will write about it. If you act like a jerk in public we’re gonna write about that too. Don’t be a jerk, Rev.
P.S. Stop calling the emails private. Only a child would think that you can send an email to an elected official’s public account and think it would remain top secret.
