Ah, girl’s softball: there is nothing more competitive  than a bunch of young girls vying for the bragging rights of being champions. But just how far will some girls go to get there? Tanya Harding and Nancy Kerrigan are prime examples of just how far the catitude’s reach is.

The other day, a girl’s softball team out of Atlee, VA was disqualified from playing in the Big Kahuna – the Junior Little League World Championship – because of this photo

Not very ladylike, girls!

Now – I know 12-14 year old kids flipping the bird is nothing new. Hell, I’m pretty sure the majority of us did at that age, and even NSTB used to take it a step further and flash gang signs for the camera (I’m since reformed, I promise.)

The glaring difference between then and now is, when we took those photos, we didn’t run around the neighborhood stapling the pics to telephone poles like a sign for your lost, beloved pet Rover. Nor did we pop ’em in the snail mail to all of our classmates. They usually stayed relegated to a photo album or pinned to a wall (if you remembered to hoof it to the nearest pharmacy and get them developed, that is.)

So, what’s the scoop with this exactly?

“The Atlee Little League softball team was disqualified Saturday from playing in the Junior League World Series after a player posted a photo of her teammates, ages 12-14, giving middle fingers on Snapchat. Little League spokesman Kevin Fountain wrote in a statement to theRichmond Times-Dispatch that it was a “violation of Little League’s policies regarding unsportsmanlike conduct.” The post itself, which was coupled with a caption that read “watch out host,” came after the team won its semifinal game against host team Kirkland, which went to the championship game instead and lost 7-1 to USA Central.

According to an Atlee coach, the post was in response to dishonest play by Kirkland. Via theRichmond Times-Dispatch:

Atlee coach Chris Mardigian said the issue was retaliation against some members of the host team who had treated the Atlee girls with less-than-ideal hospitality.

Friday’s game ended in a double play shortly after a baserunner from the Kirkland team was ejected for stealing signals from the Atlee team while on second base and relaying them to the batter. A Kirkland coach was ejected.

After Atlee manager Scott Currie caught wind of the post, it was deleted and he gathered his players to personally apologize to Kirkland. The disqualification came later, a decision Currie disagreed with, telling the Times-Dispatch, “It’s a travesty for these girls. Yes, they screwed up, but I don’t think the punishment fit the crime.”

Late Saturday night, Atlee Little League president Jamie Batten sent a statement to the Times-Dispatch saying that the organization is “disappointed” by the incident, and that the players “will brush themselves off after a loss, and try again — after having learned a most valuable lesson.”

All righty – so shit got heated between the teams, they were playing dirty, so on and so forth. That’s the nature of the beast and something you learn to deal with when you play organized sports as a kid. “Less-than-ideal hospitality” – what does that even mean? Did they not shake out the doormat for them or something?

Whatever “unhospitable” thing that happened aside – HALF of the team decided to take a group pic, in full uniform, IN the dugout, flipping the bird and throwing shade at the other team all in one felled swoop. Then they took it a step further and posted it to Snapchat.

My take on this is probably going to be unpopular, but, I really don’t give a flying fuck:

I think that The Little League handled it beautifully – they deserved the DQ. You win as a team, you lose as a team, you get disqualified as a team. Not to mention, it was HALF the roster in the photo anyway, so even if they suspended only those six girls, the other six would’ve had to forfeit anyway.

While this isn’t really an egregious offense, it is unsportsmanlike, and it isn’t cool. What it IS is an incredible lesson for these girls: what you post on social media can, and often does, have real life consequences. This heavy-handed repercussion is precisely what these girls need so they don’t end up on blogs like Turtleboy. While it sucks that they weren’t able to go on and play in the championship game, they’ll be heading home from Washington with a ton more life experience under their belt which will hopefully help them become productive, well-rounded members of society one day.

What do you think? Am I a cunt for supporting the Little League? Think the punishment was too harsh or dead on? Let me know in the poll below!

If the other team was cheating, then both sides should have been disqualified. It almost smacks like Kirkland was rewarded for stealing signs.

But NSTB is dead on – maybe these little prim stargazers will learn a valuable lesson from this. But probably not.

Would they have been disqualified if they were a black team?

The same people who agree with the punishment are the same people who encourage participation trophies. Totally useless people who have no business playing sports, watching sports, or encouraging their children to get involved in sports. Keep the sjw out of sports please. Btw nstb i give you credit for calling yourself a cunt, you cunt.

Right or wrong? Who knows? Life lesson for sure. Maybe start the season with a session on sportsmanship, and maybe have them sign a conduct contract, giving them fair warning. Definitely, warn them about the impact of social media.

Since when is stealing signs illegal? You have to change up the signs to keep the other team on their toes. When I was in Little League our signs changed every game.

I would be completely on your side if the other team hadnt already been proven to be cheaters. I hate dealing in gray areas like this but, there is no way anybody is going to convince me that a team disqualified for cheating should then be reinstated to a championship game because of a photo. Teo wrongs dont make a right but these are young girls who need to be taught life lessons, one of these teams made a mistake rhat in the adult world would be frowned upon at least and cost you a job at worst (flipping the bird) the other teams violation in the adult world could lead them to serious prison time (cheating/manipulation). I think they missed the mark on this one.

I agree, make it a teachable moment. Sit the group down and politely tell them, ” Ladies, I’m good at two things: baseball and fingering your mommas”.

That’s all I got to say about that.

Maybe if they just said , this is our fucking city. I hope these girls remember when this year’s world series is recalled this is what people will remamber. Can anyone tell me who won when the nappy headed hoes lost? I think they’ll end up with more fame than if they swept the series.

No mention of Trump causing these girls to overreact?
I read a story yesterday about a pro baseball player suspended for 2 games for a gay slur……THAT is an overreaction!

If they were giving the finger to trump, the league probably would have gave them extra points on the board.

My only beef is this: I see 6 girls chucking the bird in the photo (above), not the entire team. Should the entire team be penalized for the action of the 6? I do not think so. By that logic every time a Patriot is called w/ an unsportsmanlike conduct call during a game I guess the Pats should forfeit the game, right?

6 in the pic, but only 5 flipping off. And it’s not the just the finger, they all have their thumb out too. Thumb should be tucked in for a true FU.

Hopefully their parents use it as life lesson for them, and not try to blame everybody, but the girls, for the outcome.

Some Sports parents can become HUGE douchebags during these kinds of events.

I’m not offended by stuff like that but people who make that gesture are almost
always idiots with attitudes. I used to work at a hospital where my co-worker, who
made a lot of money, posted on FB on how “irritating and demanding” the patients were.
She lost a job that she studied long and hard for. Everything you post online is out there for the world to see and can affect you education, employment & reputation.
This is a good lesson for them and will help them.
