Everyone knows Worcester has a problem with panhandlers, thanks to Tracy Novick’s lawsuit against the city ordinance banning the dangerous practice. So one blue-blooded Worcesterite took it upon themselves to go and do something about it:

God bless this man. Anyone who gives money to these people is an idiot. If everyone stopped giving these nudniks money then they’d stop standing in the street looking like eyesores. Like we said the other day, there are now THREE bums standing at the Webster Square. There’s that much cash being tossed around from people coming from Moe’s apparently.

Look, if we want Worcester to be a normal place, where normal people wanna live, we can’t be having this shit. Someone sent us a picture of a huge bottle of urine lying in the middle of Belmont Street that some asshat bum left there the other day. (if you sent us that picture please send it again because we lost it)

11892203_1624017181214892_7079379736517565756_n

Then I was driving the other day and stopped at the Kelley Square exit off of 290, and some dooshnozzle eating a banana tosses the banana peel on the ground, puts on his backpack and walks away. This is what the ground looks like when you’re sitting at that light:

11951032_1623953004554643_256497012_n

Lovely. If we’re gonna let these idiots stand there all day can we at least make them pick up some trash while they’re busy doing nothing?

Then there’s this:

Screen Shot 2015-08-27 at 4.06.09 PM

You see this shit happen all the time. Worcester is the only city in America where the bums all have 401K’s.

Just remember come election time – Tracy Novick did this. It’s all her fault. The Turtleboy Ticket for School Committee is coming tomorrow.

What a great idea! I think we need a lot more of this. I was thinking that you need at least one person with the sign or to run interference, plus at least a couple of other people on the scene at all times. One of them should have a camera ready to roll, and a phone ready to dial 911 if necessary. One more person as a ‘bodyguard’ to help out if the situation turns violent.

If we could get enough of these anti-panhandling squads out there (using the same “freedom of speech”), it might really make a difference. It might take some time, though, as there is a steady flow of bums.

Great going guys, I’d love to hear how it works out for you.

I know there are people who really need help and probably use the money they get wisely, but I’m willing to bet they are a very small minority. And in this liberal state, there are more than enough programs that people who are legitimately in need can access.

The problem is not the homeless so much as it is the assholes that enable them. Check out this video that shows how more people (mostly young douchebags who think they are cool) are more willing to help out addicts than they are willing to help a needy parent/child:

Wow! There is so much bitterness and hate in these comments. Not one of you has hit upon a viable solution. This isn’t just a black and white issue that can be solved with a no pan handlers law or people standing around with signs telling people that the beggers are often druggies. Can you say captain obvious?

You are all forgetting what these pan handlers are. Desperate human beings. Such have very little to lose. The addicts care about one thing only, getting their next fix. Their addiction has reduced them to a situation where they would sell the person they care most about down the river if it means they can spend the next few hours so high they are numb to their pain.

They will either get the money for their fix from the pity of others or from breaking into your house or car. Isn’t it better to have them on the corners begging rather than creeping in parking garages trying to get into cars or breaking into your home. I know it happens anyway, but such behavior would only escalate.

What has brought people to such a wretched state? I truly doubt it was their lifes ambition to be a dirty, drug addicted bum. So you work full time. Good. You are lucky. You have the skills, education, health and means of keeping a job. It is not so easy for the mentally ill and poorly educated to do so.

Many of these homeless are severely mentally ill. There is no where and nothing for them. Others are caught in the vicious cycle of one or two really bad decisions they can’t recover from. Addiction has taken over all of their being. While yes, some are scammers with nice trucks, many are not.

I am not saying to just let things go on as they are. These people need help. It is jot the kind you can throw a few dollars at and forget. These people need mental health care. They need rehabilitation. The problem is for some it is just easier not to fight the addiction. But there are those who would take the opportunity if they could. Unfortunately, the current system stops far short of the help they need.

Of course you will say you made all the right decisions. Why should you care about or want to pay for anything for these losers? Well, we are all few bad decisions and mental illnesses away from being just like them. When you are tucked up in your warm bed tonight, remeber that.

They wont go away until people come together to do something about the root of the problem. That won’t happen though. People are too judgmental, selfish, angry, and cruel to really help.

Ashley-how does picking up the trash on the street help with drug addicts and alcoholics panhandling in the city?! I failed to see the connection, lol. Most of the street beggers appear able bodied and fully capable of working some type of job….if they were not waiting to get drunk or high.

    • ashley
      August 29, 2015 at 10:18 am

It doesnt help the drug problem. It helps the trash problem that evryone is complaining about. And just because someone is able bodied doest mean someone will hire them if they cant shower or wash their clothes. Some of those people you all talk about so kindly fought wars for the freedoms you have to bash them on the internet.

Ashley… your a jerk! Please indicate how many occasions you specifically went out and cleaned up the trash you are talking about! Do you have the dates? How many hours have you actually done the cleanup routine for these trash mongers? I bet you’ve spent more time bitchin to other folks than you have actually spent cleaning! Get a life!

I actually am not a jerk at all. I pick up trash left behind at parks and lakes and hiking trails everytime I go to one. I dont exactly keep a lot but im sure if i look back at my pictures I can come up with some if you’d really like. I actually do not spend my time bitching about it, I just pick it up and shake my head. I should just leave it there to pile up and upset me everythime i want to enjoy the area? Doesnt make any sense to me when i can just pick up a few items here and there to help do my part to keep the places i like to go enjoyable. I do actually have a life already, thank you.

It’s comforting to read this blog and realize there are other sane, normal people left in Worcester. But, facts must be faced. The city is irredeemably gone. No election ticket, demand for change, protest, call for sanity or other action can long forestall its slide into urban hell. It’s sensible; not defeatist to plan to move away and to protect oneself carefully in the meantime. Just look at today’s article in the Telegram about the dirt-bike reign of terror on our public streets. The cops say the laws are too weak to punish the riders by confiscating the unregistered and probably stolen bikes they are riding. They further claim the riders are too speedy and skilled to chase with their patrol cars, and, in any case, it would endanger the public if they pursued the villains. The council, as usual wants to pass a law, and as usual the city solicitor opines it can’t be done except by a special method which would require a years-long appeal to the State and a unanimous council vote. This is how the council operates on every issue-heat, but no light. What is needed is new and supportive leadership which would give the new police chief one and only one simple order-“Clean This City Up.” It will never happen, so pack your bags and move.

I won’t be spending 2 hours with my kids tomorrow morning picking up trash. I have to DISCOURAGE my kids from picking up stuff off the ground to throw away due to the sheer number of needles present in the area. I’m not about to let my 8 year old catch HIV from a dirty needle left behind by a druggie.

    • ashley
      August 28, 2015 at 2:52 pm

No one told you to have your kid pick up dirty needles, thats just another excuse to sit behind your computer and not do anything. There are plenty of organizations that do communty service and pick up trash. There are plenty of ways to help the situation youre all complaining about. If everyone waits for everyone else to start, no one ever will. There are ways to get your children involved in the community and to teach them that ‘those people’ are a reality in life and that we can all help to make it better.

      • Anah
        August 28, 2015 at 6:30 pm

I teach my children that “those people” exist, and that actions have consequences. Every single person hooked on IV drugs made a decision at one point to inject a foreign substance of dubious origin into their bloodstream for the very first time. An AIR BUBBLE injected into the bloodstream can be deadly, yet they still chose, at one point, to inject whatever it is into their bodies.

If someone wants off drugs, there are programs out there. Is it easy? Nope, it isn’t. The person on drugs has to commit to it, has to choose, and has to have the fortitude to follow through.

My children’s job is to be children. Not to be “understanding” and “tolerant” of a homeless druggie, give them their chores money, and clean up after them. I have taught my kids you NEVER give money to beggars. If you are feeling generous, give a sandwich, a meal, a water bottle, but never, ever money. Could you honestly live with yourself if the $2 you gave the panhandler killed them?

And of course I wouldn’t send my children to pick up a needle on the ground. But all the Dunkin cups and blunt wrappers may be sitting on top of a needle. Addicts aren’t known for being meticulous about their sharps disposal, and it is a known threat.

        • ugh
          August 28, 2015 at 9:57 pm

Not everyone who is homeless is a bad person or a drug addict. Not all trash is left behind by ‘bums’. Sorry to break it to you but there are kids, whose parents think they are great kids, running around or driving around with their friends and throwing trash out the window. Or groups of teenagers who have good families and go to school who throw parties at the lakes or trails or wherever who leave cans and bottles and junk food. I know because I was a kid and I did it too. There are homeless people with signs asking for work! Families whose spouses leave or pass away and they cant pay their bills and have no family. People whose homes have burned down. I know because Ive know people this has happened to. Not all bad things come from bad people. Not all good people do good things.

Yet another one hated for being right.Stand behind your beliefs no matter what. The people complaining about this are the same people that pull up to Kelley Square and shove their nose into their smartphone while few take the time to look some of the homeless in the eye and have some words with them, light their cigarette, throw them a soda or drink.I work my balls off too but it doesn’t mean I’m going to ignore someone who might need help.A lot of us are only one step away from where these people are so be careful with your assumptions on how they ended up there.

You are all part of the problem when you talk about people that way. You dont want to see it or deal with it? DO SOMETHING OTHER THAN BASH PEOPLE ON THE INTERNET. Awww you all work 40-60 hours a week? HOW LUCKY YOU ARE! When youre done with your workweek and go home to your families and hot meals there are still people out on the streets because thats the world we live in. Panhandling happens all over the country, not just i Worcester. You want to do something about it? Get off your computer and go outside and gather your friends and family and do someting to HELP. Spend 2 hours with your kids on a Saturday picking up trash in your neighnorhood instead of walking by it everday blaming someone else. Make your kids work for the community you live in. Otherwise who know, one of those ‘low life bums’ could be your kids in ten years.

I absolutely think everyone should be responsible for their own trash, but the reality is they arent. I do think that the people who have homes and families should encourage change and lead by example. If you dont like seeing the trash, help pick it up instead of waiting for someone else to do it.

I can understand your point with the way people are talking about these panhandlers. Yes they are human and some are probably very good people before drugs took over their lives but to tell people who work very hard all week that they should go out and pick up trash that people who are not working (at all!) have created is absurd!
I work downtown and I am surrounded by this daily. I see young people spend an entire day sleeping on the grass at the common in between harassing people for money, and yes they are harassing and can be very mean if you say you don’t have money. They throw their trash on the ground when there are trash bins 5 feet away. I’ll be damned if I am going to pick up their mess. The city has enabled them enough! I’m sure as hell not going to pretty up their campsite for them!

      • ugh
        August 29, 2015 at 10:12 pm

Im not saying anyone should pick up trash if they dont want to. BUT if they dont want to see it and they dont want it there, then they should do something about it, that is my point. I understand you not wanting to ‘clean up their campsite’, but its everyones campsite. Its everyones community, everyones streets, everyones earth. I am not telling anyone that they have to pick up other peoples trash. Im saying that if you want things done a certain way, you do it yourself. Thats what people are taught since childhood.

I agree with a lot of what people are saying and I know that people get harassed for their money and that trash is being thrown on the ground, I get it. Im just saying there are much better and productive ways to go about the ‘trash’ problem other than sitting behind a computer degrading people who will never even see what you have to write. Really, I go thru that light in the first picture near Cambridge St. I watch the panhandlers pushing the “walk” button all the time which backs the cars up. Wastes our time & gas.
