Last week I announced that I was taking some time off to deal with mental health issues, in particular depression. Some people have suggested that posting about it and writing on Turtleboy won’t help me get better, but talking openly about things has always been the way I cope with trauma. I can’t tell you how much the outpouring of love and well wishes from turtle riders has meant the last week. I’ve received hundreds (maybe thousands) of DMs and emails from people who not only offer to help, but have opened up to me – a complete stranger – about some of the most personal things that have affected them in similar ways, and how they coped with it. I can’t tell you how much that means, and although I could not respond to every message I read every single one of them.
As it turns out I had a panic attack (first time, wouldn’t wish it on my worst enemy), and since then I’ve been dealing with really bad anxiety and depression that made it almost impossible to sleep or eat. I’ve been seeing doctors and going to therapy, and it’s helped a lot. I have 3 more sessions this week.
With that said I want to return to blogging because I think it’s good for my mental health. When I don’t blog all I think about is the other stuff. I find that keeping myself busy and talking to other people is the best medicine I can find.
I also would like to use this opportunity and the platform that I have to raise awareness about suicide prevention, which we need now more than ever. To that end I would like to collaborate with an established non-profit (in the Boston area preferably) that works to help people and families who find themselves in situations like I did. I wanna help get rid of the stigma that you can’t talk about this stuff, or that it’s too personal, because it would blow your mind how many people are going through the same stuff.
Ideally I would like to have a representative from one of these non-profits come on the Live show/podcast with me and discuss what they do, and how turtle riders can help. I’d be happy to open up about exactly what led me to my situation last week, and how others who are feeling that way can cope. I’d like to open up the phone lines and allow other people to call in and speak about their experiences. And I’d like to sell t-shirts in which 100% of all profits go directly to whatever non-profit I partner with.

I love how some people come in here and bash TB. Most of us enjoy the content without contributing anything to him. I’ve dealt with depression from many angles. My wife suffers from it, many of my friends deal with it, and I’ve had more than a few hours with it myself.
Ultimately, it seems to me that depression is dealt with differently by everyone and there is no “true way” of dealing with it. If blogging makes you happy, do it. If it doesn’t, stop.
Personally, for me, it helps to remember that this feeling of being down is temporary and will pass. Everything is temporary. Try not to get hung up on the hypocrite comments or “how ironic” posts. In the end we’re all responsible for our own actions, no one else is. You’re not responsible for anyone who’s harmed themselves, just like whoever is causing your emotional state isn’t responsible for your actions whether they be good or bad.

Here is the consensus as I know it. Two types (at least) of depression … Clinical and Nonclinical. Clinical is considered a disease and as such it should be treated by a medical expert (Doctor). The most common treatment for it is prescription medication. That is ALMOST the only thing that works. There is ECT and TMS, … but those are when only medication does not help. Good luck. Get a good diagnosis and do what the Doctor says … if clinical. I’m on mine for life … and it is working well.
