Fox 25 NewsThe cutest new addition to the Marshfield High School is an 11-month-old puppy that will be trained as an emotional support dog by next year. The tiny German Shepard, named Nala, is all about playing and relieving stress. Emotional support dogs in schools and in the workplace have been proven effective against stress and anxiety. The impact animals have on students, especially during periods of high stress, such as finals week, was enough to get the counseling staff a grant to fund Nala’s arrival.

“Having an emotional therapy dog in here is just one step that we can take to hopefully alleviate some of the stress in kids lives when they come into the school,” said District Superintendent Jeff Granatino.

During her adjustment period, Nala will be living with the school’s counselor Rebecca O’Dowd. She’ll be working with a trainer to bring Nala into contact with students and staff for all sorts of reasons.

“The goal is that she aids the entire emotional support community here in the building,” O’Dowd said. “Animals have a way of making people feel unguarded and vulnerable and more open and calm.”

Every day I find it harder to differentiate between the news and The Onion. I would’ve bet money this was satire. Turns out it’s all too real.

Yup, that’s right – Marshfield High School purchased a dog to help kids “relieve stress.” Ya got that? Without this dog, they’d all be dropping out like pregnant teenagers. Newsflash – if you think high school is stressful, the real world is going to hit you like a shit ton of bricks, and it’s not gonna be pretty. If you need a cuddly dog to get you through Algebra 2, you shouldn’t be going to college. You’re not even remotely close to being ready to fend for yourself.

Seriously, what is there to be stressful about in high school? I got mostly B’s in high school while taking AP classes and at no point was I even remotely close to feeling stressed. And I stayed after school and did sports and had a job and the whole nine yards. Seriously, I can’t remember a time in my life that was more carefree than high school. I mostly thought about two things:

  1. Who’s brother was buying us booze this weekend
  2. Who wants to make out with me at the Palladium?

And don’t give me any bologna about times have changed and kids have more pressure nowadays. If anything things have become easier. Back in the 90’s if John Monfredo said you had a research paper due with MLA citations, you had to go to the library, find books, highlight shit, write more shit down, type it into your computer, and whip out the Encyclopedia Brittanica. It was actual work. Now kids can just go on Google, copy and paste a bunch of stuff, slightly reword it, cite it, and call it a day. Oh, and most of these schools have iPads and 1 to 1 computers now, never mind the world of information every kid possesses at their fingertips with their iMachines.

Of course this all the brain child of a guidance counselor and administration. Two groups of people who are far removed from the reality of what teachers actually do. Is there any easier job in a school than being a guidance counselor? You sit in an office and kids who don’t wanna be in class come down, pretend to be stressed, drink free lemonade, shit on their teachers, and hug puppies now.

Ya know who’s not gonna be going to guidance to hug puppies? Kids who do their work and play by the rules. The future leaders of the world. The kids we should be focusing our attention on. But the problem with society today is we care more about people who aren’t doing what they’re supposed to be doing and have a never ending list of excuses about why life isn’t working out for them. Meanwhile Ravi Srinivasan is wearing his tapered jeans and getting straight A’s while handling his business like a champion. He probably doesn’t even know his guidance counselor’s name. I couldn’t tell you who mine was in high school and things worked out just fine.

The most shocking part about this is that no one really seems to be objecting to it on the Facebook machine:

On what planet am I living where this has become normal? People whine about this generation being soft and whatnot, but it’s really not their fault. It’s the adults like these ding-dongs who have told them that they need safe spaces and cuddly dogs to make it through the day. One of the kids in that video is wearing a football shirt:

He plays a sport where bigger kids in pads and helmets violently crash into him repeatedly. But he needs a cuddle puppy to get through Mr. Buckley’s Biology midterm. Makes sense.

Speaking of football, it’s not surprising that this story popped up at Marshfield High School, especially considering what these gutless enabling administrators did to legendary football coach Lou Silva.

Coach Silva, who played Division 1 football at Boston College, was at the helm for the MSH Rams for 36 successful years:

During his tenure at Marshfield, Silva led the Rams to a 236-144-7 record, winning five championships – EMass Super Bowls in 1995 (Division 3B), ’96 (3A), ’98 (Div. 2) and 2009 (2A), plus a Div. 2 state title in 2014. His teams were runners-up five times, including three in a row from 2006-08 in EMass Div. 1A.

Ironically Coach Silva was also a guidance counselor at MHS, which works out well for a football coach since that’s basically a full time job too. And yet somehow he was able to do his job without the assistance of a cuddly puppy.

However, he recently retired from that position, and the school used this as an excuse to not hire him back. Even though there’s no contractual requirement that coaches have to be teachers. Obviously it’s easier and preferable if the coaches are teachers since they’ll see kids in the building and interact with them more. But in this case it’s not necessary since the guy is very successful and was a guidance counselor that most kids probably didn’t interact with anyway.

After a lot of public outcry administration issued this press release to explain why he was basically fired:

“Principal Keuther noted other reasons for wanting to open the position of head football coach when he met with Mr. Silva twice over the past two weeks, as well as when they had discussions over the previous few years about the future of the program. Again, we are not at liberty to discuss what those reasons are.”

In other words, they wouldn’t say what the “other reasons” were for not hiring him back, besides the fact that he’s no longer a guidance counselor.

Of course what that really means is that this guy is too old school, hurts kid’s feelings, and doesn’t let them hug puppies at practice when they get boo-boos. These kids would never, ever have survived Rigo Alfonso’s house of pain at Worcester South back in 97. This is our future.

So what about the emotionally needy kids with dog allergies, or the non emotional kids with dog allergies? It’s a cute puppy so fuck them I guess.

If there was ever any doubt that one of the Turtles was at South around the same time as me, he tanks out a Ravi Srinivasan reference. And Mr. Alonso, to boot.

My question here, though, is will they keep the dog when it stops being small and cute? And which detentioneer will be tasked with picking its dumps up off the practice field?

I can just see it now, some mom with a kid that’s allergic to EVERYTHING, (you know you know these kids) is going to flip the Fuck out about this. Now they’ll have to return this dog for a custom bred hypoallergenic dog. Then, some mom with be upset because their kid was attacked by a dog and they are traumatized from it and is deathly scared of dogs, so then they’ll have to get a custom bred hypoallergenic cat. No one will ever be happy.

I know I sound like a pajama boy, but that’s because I am. I don’t see why we should raise our kids to be tough and resilient. Look at me, I’m a big pussy and I own a cell phone that my parents paid for.

You don’t have to be tough and resilient, if you’re happy then that’s what matters man! (Or woman) it just matters that you’re happy and for some people a dog does that for them. I’m out spoken about this because in high school I went through chemo and antibiotic treatments with a picc line and port and I hid it from everyone. I wore long sleeve shirts and inside I wanted to kill myself. I was so stressed out and had the worst anxiety and felt that no one understood. I went to the doctors and told them and got all these meds that actually made my symptoms worse, but when I got my service dog things changed in a really good way. It’s just hard for people to understand if they’ve never been depressed or have gone through actual big boy problems at a young age. I also don’t think (no you but tbs) calling minors “pussies” will help them become better kids who don’t want to kill themselves or shoot up the school (not trying to be dramatic but nowadays it’s a reality) I just feel like we should be more accepting of alternative solutions to real problems people don’t recognize. I’m also a big fan of turtleboy and will continue to read their stories, I feel their investigational work is on point I just don’t agree with their input on this topic because I’ve personally seen the benefits of a working dog that’s all.

This is the worst article you’ve ever written.

2.8 million youth age 12-17 had at least one major depressive episode in 2014.
Between 10 to 15 percent of teenagers have some symptoms of teen depression at any one time.
About 5 percent of teens are suffering from major depression at any one time
As many as 8.3 percent of teens suffer depression for at least a year at a time, compared to about 5.3 percent of the general population.

It’s not that high school is so hard and they are pussies, it’s how the brain develops at that age and it’s natural to feel depressed and have anxiety. These dogs are amazing, many schools use them for kids who are autistic so the teacher can be alerted to a stressed student who may not express how they are feeling. I have a seizure dog myself, I work with dogs all the time. You clearly missed the whole point here. Maybe you’re the pussy who owns cats and doesn’t realize that working dogs actually help people. If we stopped utilizing dogs and the police didn’t have dogs because they have guns would that make them pussies too? There are actual stats and facts about how dogs help students. Do some research or read a book or some shit.

See the problem we face today is the fact that depression is a real thing that people don’t recognize. It’s almost like you expect the kids who are stressed and depressed to go to the doctor and get drugged up when you can just get a dog that can make your day a little better.

With all the deserving puppies in shelters, this school district obtains “a grant” to go out and BUY a puppy? Turtleboy: wish you could have found out how much all this cost. Amazing.

I am torn on this one. On one hand these kids are pussies as are so many kids these days because their pathetic Liberal parents don’t want their feelings to be hurt or for them to ever succeed at anything. That being said, dogs are awesome!
