Dear Turtleboy,
Last night, after a long day, I decided that I wanted to go grab some beer for my fridge. This turtle rider doesn’t drink much, so I usually don’t have beer in my fridge anymore. (Another sign of my age, I guess.) As I left the store (Vernon Hill area of Worcester), I noticed a teenager, dressed in all black clothing, wearing a hoodie, coming out from behind my car…
Yo, Who you reppin’?
Yo, who you reppin’?
I’m not reppin’ anybody…
At this point my potential assailant began reaching into his waistband for an unknown object… It’s unknown because I ran. I don’t know if he was grabbing a knife, gun, or wanted to show me the newest Pokémon he just caught.. either way, I wasn’t sticking around to find out. I ran back into the liquor store and told the clerks, who immediately called the police. I was lucky. This kid had two other friends, waiting somewhere off to the side. If I had put up a fight, I fear that there’s a real chance I wouldn’t be writing you today.
As I was running back into the store, the only thing going through my mind was “This kids gonna shoot me in the back.” For the first time in my 30+ years living in our city, I actually felt unsafe.
Then I started thinking about different scenarios… What if I had been armed as well? What if I shot this young man? Would I then be labeled a racist? Would their be riots? Would I be the next Darren Wilson? It’s a sad state of mind, when thinking about defending yourself, brings upon thoughts of relief that you didn’t have to.
I am lucky.
I’m lucky I was able to get away, unharmed, with all of my property. That teenager intended to harm me, whether it be physically or financially. I’m lucky that none of my scenarios had to be played out. But I also came to the conclusion that law abiding citizens need to take steps to protect themselves. I’m not suggesting that people go out and pretend they’re Johnny Law, but  you should seriously consider grabbing some pepper spray or get an LTC. Be Prepared. Normal people don’t approach strangers and question their gang affiliation. Remember in these situations, you’re not dealing with someone who has empathy for your own safety… And if you’re wondering, those 3 teens got away. Unless they did something else overnight, and got picked up for it, they’re still out there looking for another potential victim.
Stay Safe out there. I was Lucky. You may not be.

All I gotta say is, “our streets are safe.” Did this guy have a gun? Who knows. But when you confront someone in a parking lot on Vernon Hill while wearing a hoodie in the summer and ask them about what gang they’re reppin, you don’t get to act surprised or complain about profiling if someone finally decides to defend themselves. Just sayin.

McGoverns across from Emerald Isle. Another one near the PNA club and another one near Millbury St School makes 4. TB said Vernon Hill not Vernon St. Ask your nephew Jethro.

VERNON HILL = the area surrounded by Providence St and Vernon St. NOT MILLBURY ST.

Anyone who feels safe on Vernon or Grafton Hill or even Hamilton Street has no street smarts. Ghetto rats have little to live for and deserve and give no respect. Even a victim who complies is likely to get seriously hurt.

Hey, someone with common sense, would you look at that.

Story doesn’t pass the smell test. But I’ll bite… Let’s, for a minute, assume what was told here really did happen. Well, if the suspect did in fact ask them who it was they were reppin’, there was obviously a reason for that. If the motive was robbery, I doubt he or she would be asked who they were reppin’. Instead, cash would have been demanded and a weapon would have been produced immediately.

Honest opinion? This person is full of shit and/or needs to lay off the hallucinogenic drugs.

Funny this guy mentioned Pokémon. My coworker was upset because her teenage brother went looking for Pokémon in Crystal Park, and a group of guys apparently roughed him up and pulled a knife out to threaten him when they found out he was not on their Pokémon team. The family didn’t want to report it to the police because “no snitching.” I was not there, I don’t know this is true.

If “Pokemon” ever becomes slang for heroin, this story will have a whole new meaning.

juror seven, do you need police statements or video surveillance for proof. How about this, lets round up everyone in the neighborhood so you can fucken interview them personally. Convinced yet? Here’s a hint, stop defending scumbags that do crime in this city.

Not defending anyone, only asking for a more complete set of details. Seems that several other comments after mine have some doubts. One good point suggested where on Vernon Hill is there a full service packie?

      • poopalarm
        July 20, 2016 at 10:27 pm

What is a “full service packie?” Is it one that provides a service of calling the police when you have a run-in with a criminal outside of it?

  • juror seven
    July 20, 2016 at 12:58 pm

A lot of questions. Is this fact or fiction? Did the victim stay until the police arrived? Was a statement given by the victim and anyone else in the store? Is there an entry in the daily police log at the station?

      July 20, 2016 at 6:20 pm

Kid got away? Yeah fir now, but did victim give PD a statement? Did officer take a report? Yes this us a plausible scenario, but a crime WAS committed and PD needs to be looking out for description of perpetrator. If you didn’t give statement, go to the PD today and do so. Ask for Community Impact Division supervisor. Don’t let kid skate on this. If true, he’s going to jack someone else soon.
