Feel-good stories like this come out of Brockton about as often as Halley’s comet comes around. So we all should appreciate and cherish the few times a story like this makes us smile.

Samantha McGraw, an eighteen-year-old Brockton student, was confined to a wheelchair on-and-off for years after multiple surgeries. Doctors told her when she was very young that she would always have trouble walking, and would never be able to dance. Her response to them as a little girl was, “I’m gonna try to dance anyway,” and through hard-work and perseverance, she proved them all wrong and became a half-time dancer while attending Brockton high. This weekend, she will proudly walk across the stage and sing while she competes for the Miss Massachusetts crown at the Hanover theatre in Worcester.

Diagnosed with a rare disease called Slipped Capital Femoral Epiphysis, this 2015 graduate of Brockton High tearfully admits, that when she was confined to a wheelchair, she “never imagined that she would ever even be able to walk in high heels”. However this did not deter her from competing in beauty pageants at a young age, and earlier this year she eventually won her first contest, being named Miss Greater Worcester. This victory qualified her to compete in the upcoming Miss Massachusetts pageant.

As Miss Greater Worcester, she created a program called “Wheels for Worcester”, which provides wheelchairs and assistance to those in need that can’t afford it. Always remaining conscious and sympathetic to those who have experienced similar hardships, this 18-year-old saint also spends much of her free time volunteering with various organizations to help disabled people. It’s hard to believe she’s from Brockton!

In closing, she said she wants to make the City of Champions proud by bringing home the state title. Go Samantha!

When you hear of a young person being wheel chair bound and overcame all those other little things in life people fight about on a daily basis seem so small in comparison. There are so many young people out there like this and more. These are the ones who deserve all the recognition and all the grants too:) Thank you for posting this story.

I don’t often say “you go girl,” because I am not Oprah, but in this case it seems appropriate.

Nice nice story. What she overcame is nothing short of courageous, perseverance and absolute focused determination in the face of doubt. That, in my opinion, is the definition of a hero.

You are an absolute sweat-heart Samantha. I’m not a big over the top religious type person but for you I say God Bless you!
