Two months ago we published this blog about a Brockton mother who killed her two kids in what was described as some sort of voodoo ritual. The whole thing was awful, and once again highlighted the spectacular failures of DCF, who had plenty of time to investigate how long a bunch of hockey players in Andover went without a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, but couldn’t protect those two young boys from their monster mother.

Well it turns out the voodoo thing was just a lie she was making up to try to avoid jail and go to the looney bin instead. Why did she do it? For the GoFundMe scam of course:

A perverse quest for fame and fortune may have led a city mother to brutally murder her two young sons, stabbing one of them 76 times, prosecutors from the Plymouth County district attorney’s office told a Superior Court judge Tuesday. Assistant District Attorney Jessica Kenny told Judge Brian Davis during the arraignment of Latarsha L. Sanders, the Brockton mother charged with murdering her 8- and 5-year-old sons in early February, that evidence presented to a grand jury showed that in the months prior to the killings, Sanders had jotted notes in her journal about setting up GoFundMe campaigns for members of her family, with the money going to “whoever has the best story.” She had also set up a P.O. box to receive “fan mail.”

“The indication from the notebook is that she anticipated money coming in and set up the P.O. box to receive fan mail,” Kenny said. “That may have been her mindset.”

I feel like GoFundMe needs some kind ratchet algorithm. It can be used as a tool for good. It’s a very convenient way to raise money for a good cause, and it’s a great business idea for GFM to take 5% of everything simply by existing as a platform. But the fact of the matter is that these things are ratchet magnets, and I’d estimate that 95% of GFM’s are scams like this.

Kenny said that during the time that she has been held without bail in connection with the murders, Sanders also had been in contact with some family members, asking them why they were not giving interviews, and urging them to do so. Kenny said a review of Sanders’ medical history showed that she had not been diagnosed with any sort of mental health disorder, nor had she ever been prescribed medication for one.

Jesus H. Christ. Asking family members why they’re not giving interviews? I don’t care if she hasn’t been diagnosed with anything, the woman is sick. But you can be sick and still have pure evil in your soul. She had a financial motive for killing her children, even if it was not plausible. That’s premeditated. Anyone who can do that to their own flesh and blood is not fit to walk this earth. Just throw her on ratchet island with the rattle snakes and let nature take its course.

Earlier this spring, Kenny said, Sanders’ family members told police that she had become obsessed with online videos about the Illuminati, part of a prominent conspiracy theory that posits the group is composed of powerful and famous figures that control major world events. The group sacrifices humans to extend their success.

Kenny told Davis that an autopsy of 8-year-old Edson Brito’s body showed that he had been stabbed 76 times in the neck, chest, and abdomen and had between 20 and 30 superficial cuts and scratches, while La’son Brito, 5, had been stabbed 23 times in the back, chest and abdomen, and had 80 superficial wounds. Medical examiners also recovered a taper candle that had been inserted inside the younger Brito’s throat, Kenny said.

Initially, Kenny told Davis, Sanders said she and the boys had been attacked by her adult son and his father, and that she was forced to watch as they stabbed them in front of her. But, she later admitted to stabbing her children herself as part of a “Voodoo ritual.” Sanders told police she had failed in performing the ritual on Edson, Kenny said, so she moved on to La’son.
