WPRI: A Slatersville man entered a no-contest plea last week after he was charged with soliciting another person to start a motor vehicle equipped with an ignition interlock system. Such a system is connected to a vehicle in order to prevent a person who’s been drinking from driving it. Robert Freiberger, 48, pleaded no contest to the charge, North Smithfield police said in a statement Wednesday. Instead of blowing into the ignition interlock to prove he hadn’t been drinking, police said, he’d been getting his two children, both minors, to blow into the breathalyzer port so he could start the car after having been drinking. Freiberger was given a one-year suspended prison sentence, one year probation, and ordered to pay a fine of $500. According to the Rhode Island Judiciary’s website, Freiberger has been cited for traffic violations in the past, including driving on a suspended license, and driving on a suspended vehicle registration.
How the hell is it this easy to beat a court ordered breathalyzer? Seriously, what’s the point of even having them? You trust a drunk? These people have a “disease” that makes them do dubious things to get what they want. Obviously any drunk could just find a sober person, give them $5 and make them blow in it for them.
Oh, and good thing a Rhode Island judge gave him a suspended sentence. It’s not like he has multiple DUI’s or anything. I’m sure this responsible, law-abiding adult, who made his kids blow into a breathalyzer for him, won’t be tempted to do something like this again.
At least the judge was the only one pulling a “free my boi.” The only people defending him the comments were the hurt feelings patrol and the baby momma:
“They know their father has a serious problem but they love him nonetheless.”
So let me get this straight. They know their father is a drunk, but they blew into a breathalyzer anyway so that he could drive a car and potentially kill someone? Oh yea, the news station that reported this is the REAL problem here. Not an alcoholic father or a Mom that apparently raised her children to not be able to differentiate between right and wrong.
Newsflash – your kids are not victims. The only victims of drunk driving are people that are killed by drunk drivers. If he’d kill someone, they should be charged as accessories, since as you pointed out, they were fully aware of their father’s condition.
Oh, and one more thing, according to the Providence Journal, the reason he was arrested in the first place was because you snitched on him:
However, Freiberger’s ex-wife told police in May that he was bypassing the system by having their two teenage children blow into the device for him, said Capt. Stephen Riccitelli.
Yea, if they’re teenagers then they’re old enough to know this was wrong. And by going to the cops and having him arrested you took the risk that this would be reported by the media. Because it’s a pretty outrageous thing for a Dad to get his kids to do.
Try to ruin a man’s life? Oh yea, it’s their fault that this will follow him around, not his. Oh, and WPRI isn’t judging him. But we are. As we should. Dude is a mess and a danger to society.
You’re right Le – it is a form of public humiliation. Because public humiliation is by far the most effective way to deter shitty behavior. Maybe now he’ll actually do something to correct his “disease.” Until then he’ll be saving France if you need him.

People can and should pass judgment. This guy is the worst. The pics are bad too.
Why is the nozzle shaped like a cock?
I’d much rather see folks be required to use interlocks and pay stiff monthly fees for them then jail…but this is the situation jail is for.
I don’t know what RI uses for interlocks; I do know some states they have cameras built into the unit to take the photo of the blower and require monthly inspection by a vendor who checks for physical tampering and who has been blowing into it.
That sounds like a great idea. Some how being able to prove who blew and when either with photos or something else. To many ppl do things like this to get away with continued drunk driving.
Those machines beep every few minutes to keep the driver from having someone else blowing into it then driving away. He had to be driving around with the kids in the vehicle, drunk, for this to work.
I don’t really know how these machines work so I’m genuinely curious…after a person blows into it and passes the vehicle is allowed to start. Do you have to continue to blow throughout your trip? If so how often do you have to pull over and blow? Makes for a long ride if you are following the rules and not drinking and driving…just like to learn about new things. Thanks
What would’ve been the consequences if the kids didn’t blow for their dad? Especially if he’s an angry drunk. Did you think of that?
Exactly my thoughts!! Yes the kids did wrong by blowing it for him but at the same time if they didn’t do it we would be seeing a news story of how a drunken father beat his children within an inch of their lives. The kids are not at fault and for people to say if this or that had happened his kids should of been charged as well is plain STUPID! Maybe those people should put one of their children up with an alcoholic for a few days to see what kids who have no choice live with daily! My now 12 year old daughter was beat up when she was 8 by her alcoholic father because she said NO she wouldn’t do something that could have put herself the public and the asshole drunk in danger. 4 years later she still gets shit for the situation, now it’s just that she lied and made the story up because she was scared to testify in criminal court so the charges were dropped without prejudice. I understand these kids were stuck between a rock and a hard place!
Actually, beating the shit out of assholes like turtleboi is a better way to deter shitty behavior.
Why are humans so fucking stupid? If that drunk slob had run down and/or injured or killed one of these “pro-drunk driver” people’s loved one(s), would they be more concerned about how traumatizing publicly shaming him would be for his teenage offspring? LOL.
I despise people who drive drunk, just as much as I despise people who play on their phones while driving. They fucking KNOW the risks, they KNOW it’s against the law, and they STILL put themselves above everyone else. They’re so arrogant, thinking “I’m a great driver, nothing will go wrong.” It may not happen the first time you drive drunk, or the second or third time, but one day, you’re going to get a wake up call and when that happens, I hope the entire country roasts them alive.
These morons need to start living by the quote: If you do the crime, you DESERVE TO DO THE TIME. If only these equally moronic judges would stop giving these criminals a slap on the wrist and bring the hammer down on people who drive drunk, sell dope and assault innocent people. Only then will “Do the time” ever actually mean something.
I’ll bet it’s small…….
Doesn’t know about MA, but knows in NYS he could be subjected for arrest again for a) Obstruction with a court order by having his children use the breathalyser; b) Willfully be in subordination with the said court order. He should be locked up. Doing what he done is a class E felony with tack on licence suspension of at least 18 months.
I’m sure there are similar laws here which he could be charged with breaking – but this is MA – where the only laws that are enforced are the ones used to screw over working, taxpaying citizens, especially if it is determined you are a white, male conservative. Then it’s throw the book at them.
